Your Oversized Lizard Edition of Monday Night Trivia

Set against the backdrop of a crippling defeat by the Washington Redskins, Monday night trivia gave some teams a chance to clinch a house championship at several of our venues (though none of them actually did).  It appears that some people might have taken a few extra days off this week, as all of our venues were abnormally crowded, averaging over ten teams per game.  In Arlington, three teams proved that they are feared contenders for World Series XIV, now less than six weeks away.

MONDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (71 teams across seven venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: PC Principals (Spider Kelly’s) with 177

–> Highest Score after Round 4: PC Principals (Spider Kelly’s) with 167

–> Highest First Half Score: The Fan Club (Hershey’s) with 96 **

** This ties the Pour House Trivia record for highest first-half score **

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): B-58s (DRP), Worst Case Ontario (DRP), The Bends (Greene Turtle), Jimmy’s in Vegas (Spider Kelly’s)

–> The “Christmas Characters” halftime page played to an average of 16.6, with only TWO teams scoring a perfect 20: PC Principals and Del Ray Dummies.

–> The 6-4-2 question was rather easy for many teams, as nearly half of the field recognized the early biography of Dwayne Johnson.

–> For the first time this season, three teams topped 175 points at the SAME VENUE, as PC Principals, High School Prom, and Jimmy’s in Vegas all hit the mark at Spider Kelly’s.

MONDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (61.2% success rate):

–> On March 1, 1954, the hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll accidentally contaminated the crew of a nearby fishing boat.  This incident inspired the creation of which iconic film character introduced into theaters later that year? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

DRP in Alexandria, VA

After a one-week hiatus, we are back with Monday night trivia at DRP!  And it’s the Monday before Christmas, so of course, we’re going to have some holiday-themed questions tonight.

We started off with some of Santa’s reindeer cleverly hidden within other famous names.  Then, we moved on to “Name that Tune” as our teams had to identify Christmas carols as sung by Tony Bennett.  Later on, teams had to identify Virginia of “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus”—how coincidental that we should be in Virginia asking such a question.  With such a seasonal group, it was no wonder that many of our teams knew all the answers and kept the game a close match.

Teams began to diverge and show off their skills as a heavily-academic third round left some teams struggling to identify Seychelles’ national capital and who Ivan Pavlov was.  Teams knew who Audrey and Katharine Hepburn were, but only the true cinephiles knew the films they each won their Academy Awards.

The final question had teams trying to identify a film character based off a contamination incident following the Bikini Atoll hydrogen bomb testing.  Most of the teams knew it was Godzilla, which meant a tiebreak was needed for second place.  In the end, one of the teams was one year away from correctly identify what year McDonald’s introduced the McRib.  That led to the final standings:

First Place:  Wingardium Mimosa

Second Place:  HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff

Third Place:  Worst Case Ontario

TRIVIA IS ON AS SCHEDULED AT DRP FOR NEXT WEEK.

Have a happy holiday season and have a safe journey wherever your holiday destination may be.  See you next week!

Greene Turtle in Hagerstown, MD

Tonight we had our last game of the year before Christmas!  Happy Holidays folks!  We kicked off our special pre-Christmas edition of trivia with a question about the children’s TV show PAW Patrol.  We had plenty of Christmas theme questions, even a halftime page that asked teams to identify different Holiday movie/TV characters.  I think my new favorite might be Olive, the other reindeer, mostly because of the adorable pun factor.

Heading into the final question we had a tie for first, and the final question was about film character inspirations.  However, most teams did well on this one and the tie still needed to be broken.  The tiebreaker came down to the year that the McRib was introduced, with one team being just a little bit closer.  Third place for tonight went to The Cobras, while second place went to What Else Could It Be?!?!.  Winning the tiebreaker and the game, congrats goes to The Bends on the thrilling win!  Next week we start with a question in the category of Washington Redskins History, so study up!  Happy Holidays!

Until next time,

~ Chad

Morgan Inn in Woodbine, MD

Here we are back again at Morgan Inn in Woodbine for our weekly edition of Pour House Trivia.  We talked a bit about Santa’s reindeer and late night talk show hosts in the first round, while the second round featured subjects such as Christmas carols, jawbones, and animated Disney films.  Keeping up with the time of the year we did some holiday movies only to spin right into some DC Comics action for round 3.  The final round went from Yiddish to one of my personal favs, 70’s funk.  Men and Pausers managed our high score of the night, but since they were playing ‘over the limit’, they respectfully bowed out from prizes.  Here are the official results:

First Place:  River Benders

Second Place:  Team Morgan Inn

Third Place:  Stihl

THERE IS NO TRIVIA AT MORGAN INN ON DEC. 26th.   OUR NEXT GAME WILL BE JAN. 2nd.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and we will be back with in 2017 with an opening question on “The Flintstones”.  Have a great holiday!

Uno Pizzeria in Frederick, MD

Familiar faces old and new stopped by Uno Pizzeria and Grill on what would prove to be the last game of Pour House Trivia of 2016, to battle it out for Trivia Supremacy!

Highlights of the Night:

In “I-Don’t-Know-Enough-To-Comment”: When in doubt, don’t argue with the Jewish person about Hanukkah. Even if they got the answer right. And the answer isn’t technically wrong. I cant help what Wikipedia says on the subject, I just work here! But at least I pronounced Chutzpah well later on!

In “Zodiac-Killer”: The Capricorn Contention Murder. That’s what the headline is gonna read when they find my body later this week. Whooooo boy was that a rough one! Let’s just not talk about that one ever again, mmkay? I might live longer!

In “We-Do-Not-Have-the-Funk”: The Funk question was a killer tonight. Fire and Rollercoaster were both tough pulls…unless you’ve actually been to an Ohio Players concert, which it seems certain members of Manischewitz have. Well la-di-da.

The final tonight was a house sweep, so the podium was pretty set.

In third place tonight, Manischewitz and the Grapes of Wrath!

In second place tonight, Cher’s Zombie Army!

In first place tonight, as a SOLO no less, Sexual Chocolate!

Great game everyone, and congrats to Sexual Chocolate for the Solo victory!  What a way to end 2016 for Uno’s Pour House Trivia!  Everyone have a safe, happy, and healthy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc., and New Year, and I’ll see you all in 2017!

THERE IS NO TRIVIA AT UNO PIZZERIA ON DEC. 26th.   OUR NEXT GAME WILL BE JAN. 2nd.

Until then,

Spider Kelly’s in Arlington, VA

On the 7th day of Christmas my true love gave to me…7 teams a ‘playing! The holidays are not keeping Spider Kelly trivia fans away!  Round 1 only seemed to have one tricky question, the winner’s choice category of “BoJack Horseman”.  We learned who the TRUE fans were tonight!  Round 2 saw little to no mistakes as well, with two of our teams on their way to a perfect score.  That is, until the puzzle tripped up High School Prom a bit.  Only PC Principals scored perfectly on tonight’s holiday themed halftime.

The third question of Round knocked PC Principals out of contention for a perfect score, as he bonus question of naming which movies earned Oscars for the Hepburn ladies proved tough for all but one of our teams.  Oddly, the toughest question of the night was a multiple choice option…only one team identified the McRib and its “Pork and Pepper Comeback Tour”.  The final question proved easy for most of our teams, as High School Prom and Jimmy’s in Vegas were forced to duke it out for second place.  High School Prom was slightly closer to guessing when the McRib debuted (1981), so they took the prize.  Your winners were as follows:

First Place:  PC Principals

Second Place:  High School Prom

Third Place:  Jimmy’s in Vegas

TRIVIA IS ON AS SCHEDULED AT SPIDER KELLY’S FOR NEXT WEEK.

I hope you join me and some visiting family members for trivia next week!  Bring YOUR visiting family members!

Radiohead Trivia

Il Forno Pizzeria in Frederick, MD

Happy Holidays everybody!  It sure was festive tonight!  We got the cold weather, the warm indoors, the decorations, and we got a BUNCH of teams coming out to play tonight, perhaps off work for the holidays and looking to do something with their Monday night!  Happy to have everyone come play with us!  Interestingly, we saw a good number of old teams come back to il Forno to play trivia after a few very long hiatuses.  Good to see them coming back to the ole stomping grounds!

Despite the number of returning teams, and even new teams, the cream of the crop tonight was the groups that are good here every week.  Stink Floyd looking to take down a big win after slipping last week to Balls of Fire.  The A Team also playing well against a huge field of teams, it would come down to the very last minutes of this one to decide a winner!  Stink Floyd had the early lead, holding a five-point lead over second place after the halftime break. That lead would soon be compromised with The A Team making up ground, picking up two of the 2-point bonuses that no one else got (Borneo and the Hepburn films).

Even with those pulls, Stink Floyd played well enough to stay ahead, if only by a slim margin.  The A Team trailed by three points going into the final question, with Stink Floyd ahead of the crowd.  About half our teams were able to pull “Godzilla” as the correct answer to tonight’s final question, but all of our top teams managed to turn in the correct response.  Therefore, your winners tonight:  Stink Floyd!  Second place went to The A Team, with third going to Piggy Doodles — a well played game for them too against quite a strong field of teams!

THERE IS NO TRIVIA AT IL FORNO ON DEC. 26th.   OUR NEXT GAME WILL BE JAN. 2nd.

Have a good holiday, please be safe, and we’ll see you in two weeks, the start of January!

Until then guys, thanks a bunch, see you then!
