When in Rome, Play Monday Trivia!

There were 15 venues open on Monday for Pour House Trivia at which 172 teams played, including a 22-team event at Ragtime.

The first round was of no real concern to most of our teams. They tackled topics such as the namesake for the Miranda rights stemming from an incident in Arizona, the iris of our eye, and MLB icon-slash-actor Bob Uecker. There were 18 perfect scores in this round.

Monday’s audio question played clips from a trio of TV sitcoms, which ended up being the toughest bonus chance of the night. Just under a fifth of the field correctly identified all three shows: The Odd CoupleFamily Matters, and New Girl. Other subjects here included the unfortunate fates of Henry VIII’s wives in the Tower of London, the upcoming prequel in the A Quiet Place film series, and the musical stylings of Gloria Estefan and her Miami Sound Machine. A game-high 23 teams picked up every possible point in this round.

Rebus word puzzles were featured at the top half of the halftime page. At the bottom section, teams were asked to match Olympic gold medal-winning women to their respective sport. There were 32 perfect scores here, for a page that carried an average score of 16.3 points. We reached the halftime intermission with a perfect quintet:

The second half started with a three-parter about famous people with repetitive names: American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, former U.N. Secretary-General Boutros-Boutros Ghali, and actor Kris Kristofferson. From there, we had a showing of the classic sci-fi series Lost in Space, elected two-year governors in Vermont and New Hampshire, and had a sip of brandy. This round had 15 perfect scores.

For the night’s 6-4-2, 24 teams named California from the six-point clue about its 770-foot-tall Oroville Dam. In the fourth round, we started with a question about Matt Damon film title characters as seen in Good Will Hunting and Jason Bourne, then moved on to Three Clues about the name Grimes. The night’s most difficult wagering query came later on:

  • A current Top 20 song by SZA is named for which planet in our solar system?

That song is titled Saturn, named by exactly a quarter of the field. Perfect scores in this round were earned by a half dozen teams. One of our venues was selfish and monopolized the entirety of the top five after four rounds:

  • Demolition (DRP): 170
  • Honey Fried Chicken (DRP): 167
  • Worst Case Ontario (DRP): 166
  • Smart on the Avenue (DRP): 165
  • Bespoke Trashcans (DRP): 164

FINAL QUESTION (29.07% success rate):

  • When using proper Roman numeral notation, what is the lowest number to include every Roman numeral exactly once each?

Teams had to give us the standard number, which turned out to be 1444 (MCDXLIV in Roman numerals). Monday’s game had three teams with Perfect 21 endings: Bitch, Please (Clyde’s), Barbacks (Clyde’s), and Worst Case Ontario (DRP). These were the top teams of the night:
