What a Way to End Wednesday Night Trivia!
We closed the books on Season XIV at our Wednesday night venues with quite a flourish. There were numerous House Championships on the line, including several titles that were decided by the slimmest of margins. A rather difficult final question flipped the standings at several of our venues. Check out the recap!
WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (90 teams across 12 venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap (Valley Grill) with 170
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Tom Brady (Bennigan’s – Frederick) with 160
–> Highest First Half Score: Tom Brady (Bennigan’s – Frederick) with 89
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Thanks to a rather difficult third question on author Norman Mailer, as well as the tough final question, no team scored a Perfect 21 last night.
–> The ‘Lego music groups’ on the halftime page played slightly easier than normal, as the average score topped out at 18.0, with about 15% of our teams scoring a perfect 20.
–> About one-third of our teams scored six points on the 6-4-2 thanks to their knowledge of the film “Swingers”, and its use of the word ‘money’ as an adjective.
TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (22.2% success rate):
–> Among U.S. states located east of the Mississippi River, name any three of the four states whose most populous city is LESS than 100,000 people. (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
Wednesday night is here and we had one hell of a game at Valley Grill, as we began the night with TWO TEAMS in a dead lock tie for the Season XIV House Champion. Our first round featured a couple of French references, linguistic and alcoholic, and after all five categories and bonuses; we were still tied at the end of the round. Round two was a bit tougher in regards to remembering the name of a one-hit artist, as well as remember the colors of the letters in the Google logo, and after all that our two teams were still even.
We started getting some separation after the puzzle, and the gap widened slightly in the third round for our combating teams, with a Pulitzer Prize winning author wiping out the bar. The final round saw the gap fall to just one point, and after all the wagering and answering was done, it was Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap as the House Champions for Valley Grill, congrats! Here are the results, and kudos to Stupid Sexy Flanders for the hard fought campaign.
First Place: Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap
Second Place: Stupid Sexy Flanders
Third Place: Team Second Place
Next week’s first category: Triple 50/50: Josef Stalin or The New England Patriots
We had a fun battle for the top spot at The Tavern on Wednesday! Three different teams were in first place after each score update during the game, and before the final question, those three teams were only separated by a total of just five points! No one went creatively on the wager, it was all “Go big or go home” mentality for the final. Once the smoke cleared and the new scores were tallied, our top three looked like this….
They had a rough third round but still had a nice comeback in the fourth to finish 3rd, Shart Attack!! Maybe it was because they were our House Champs this season and played a little loose, but finishing 2nd was the Toto Fan Club!! They took over 1st place after round 3 and never relinquished it to finish on top tonight, your winners tonight, Olney The Lonely!!! They went with “Jean Arthur Films” for next weeks winners choice, so study up, the BEST of luck to my teams in the playoffs this Saturday, and I’ll see everyone next Wednesday at The Tavern!

This was it! The final showdown! It came down to two of our hardest hitting teams (figuratively, thank god but it’s been close) as they were separated by a single standings point going in to tonight’s game! Talk about a nail biter!
Flight Level Awesome started out with less than top shelf enthusiasm as Tokyo Sex Whale has proven to be hard to beat when they are fielding all their starters, and there were no holds on tonight’s competition. It was fun to watch them battle, with just enough traveling and new teams to keep things spicy. You just couldn’t be sure how it was going to go! We even had a tie after the final – but it wasn’t the tie everyone was hoping for!
Tokyo Sex Whale and #Fatkidanceparty had an NBA tie breaker and Tokyo took first for not only the game but the season! Impressive! #Fatkidanceparty took second while Fight Level Awesome took their third place coupon with class. I will see you this weekend for the pub crawl and playoffs – come hang out!
Next week’s first category: “Bob’s Burgers”
And just like that, Season 14 of Pour House Trivia comes to a close here at Bennigans, and what a finish it was!
Highlights of the Night:
In “Y’all-Are-Lucky-Spelling-Don’t-Count”: Every once in a while a question comes along where the turned-in spellings I get of the correct answer are wild, and I gotta say something. When it happens like three times in a night, it makes me want to randomly add 2 point bonuses for correct spellings. Impromptu spelling bee anyone?
In “A-Tale-Of-Two-Puzzle-Pages”: Tonight’s puzzle page saw two different stories to it; the top half, no one missed a single point. The bottom part however, was a bloodbath! I guess everyone in here are LEGO fans but not so much fans of college fun facts!
In “Who-Dat-Tho?!”: No one had a clue as to Norman Mailer. 13 teams. 0 correct answers. I couldn’t have told you who he is either so it’s not like I could’ve made that one any easier. Amusingly enough though, several teams DID correctly identify the 2 point bonus part by guessing Gilmore Girls with wild answers like Steven King, JD Salinger, and Ernest Hemmingway. Sadly they needed Mailer to get credit, but hey, I’m acknowledging you at least!
The final was ALMOST a total whiff, but one team managed to pull out a little come from behind for a podium spot, the only team with a correct answer.
In third place tonight, BTF!
In second place tonight, jumping up from behind, Many Bothans!
In third place tonight, Tom Brady!
Great game everyone! And a hearty congratulations to our House Champions, Momentary Lapse of Reason! Great season everyone! Next week we have “In-Between” season play, where we will kick things off with Tom Brady Playoff Facts. Study up, and we’ll see you next time!
Yet again we welcomed two new teams to Pour House Trivia! Welcome, Superbunny and Dashing Duo (who were themselves just out of the prizes!). Woodside is proving to be a dependable, challenging and fun trivia environment – tonight we hosted eight teams!
Nonetheless, nothing too out of the ordinary occurred this evening, short of everyone learning that I was re-enlisted (the first time) by LT David Robinson, USN (and San Antonio Spurs superstar). All being said and done, Fellowship (playoff invited) played a stellar first half, before unfortunately the wheels fell off the wagon precipitating a near-fatal fall. Conversely, Season XIV House Champions (and World Series invited) Front of Class had an absolutely dismal first half. But like the thoroughbreds they are, they kicked in on the final turn and managed to place. Great fun.
First Place: We Need a Do Over
Second Place: Front of the Class
Third Place: Kickin’ Cancer
Next week’s first category: The Color of Cancer Awareness Ribbons
As always, Fair Winds and Following Seas,
Tonight at Nido’s Ristorante in downtown Frederick, we kicked things off with a question about Woody Allen films thanks to The Donner Party’s winner’s choice selection. The question asked about his 2011 film that dealt with time travel, which apparently everyone knew was ‘Midnight in Paris’. We also had a question about one of my favorite internet memes, asking about Rick Astley and the hilarious trend of ‘Rick rolling’ people. The audio question for tonight asked for a ‘titular commonality’, which ended up being that all three songs had the word red in them. We also had an amusing color question about Google Chrome’s logo, which asked about the color of the center of the logo. Teams were split between yellow and blue, but the center is blue.
Halftime asked teams to identify bands that had been turned into Legos, as well as answering whether the colleges and universities listed were public or private. We also discussed the use of the word ‘money’ as an adjective in the movie ‘Swingers’, which is used about 30 times in the film. The final question for tonight was about the 50 states, and turned out to be rather tough. Only one team got it right and that was enough to vault them into third place. Third place tonight went to Incognito, while second went to The Donner Party and the win went to We’ve Embraced Our Mediocrity! Congrats! Next week we start with a question about the Weekly World News tabloid, so that should be fun! I’ll see you all then!
Until next time,
Tonight we celebrated the House Championship of Roaming Gnomes! Hats off to them, showing up week after week and very consistently putting a beating on the competition! A well earned championship, good luck at the World Series next week, team! A great season for them, but ALSO a great season for most of the teams that play here every night! A ton of teams got a playoff invitation, looking to extend this season and making some $$$! It should be an exciting next two weeks!
The story of tonight’s game was Don’t Call Me Shirley. One of those teams that we call “silent killers”. Every week they are a threat and they often win, though they don’t really have that “elite” status because they’ve never gone on to play in the post-season. That’s a shame, as they’d be a contender in my eyes, but alas! They’re content with the weekly wins, and tonight it looked like they were ready to make that happen again!
The lead going into the 2nd half for Shirley did not diminish, picking up nearly every question we tossed at them! They led going into the final with Roaming Gnomes RIGHT behind them. Roaming Gnomes would go on to get the final question right, a rare get as only three teams picked up the correct response. RG needed a miss from Shirley to take down the win but unfortunately, that miss never came. Shirley taking down the win with a correct response on the final! Third place to the Sanchezes who bet small and were able to hang on to a $$ spot, staving off Just the Tip who jumped up a considerable amount with a correct response on the final!
Good game all! Best of luck in the post-season!
Next week’s first category: Parts of a Sailboat
What a game to close out the Season XIV regular season! Congrats to our House Champions: Sexual Chocolate! They will go straight to World Series XIV, while we wish the rest of our playoff-bound teams good luck this weekend!
And then we dove into a great game, full of unexpected stumpers that challenged the field. Spirits were very high as teams pushed on, culminating in a crazy finish as the final turned the field upside down!
First Place: Half a Brain
Second Place: Sexual Chocolate
Third Place: Heisenberg
Half a Brain collects the win, and selects, “1970s Soft Rock” as next week’s first category. Hey, waitaminute, is that a dig at my music choices??
Tonight we had a fun and competitive game at the Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, as playoff contentions were on the line and teams were fighting for the top spot, as well as the right to be called Season XIV House Champion!
One of the more entertaining parts of the night was when team Wolfpack requested *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys due to the half time puzzle page! There was a lot of renditions of the dance from the song “Bye Bye”! When it was all said and done, Soda and the Watchamacallits took home the victory and claimed the title of Season XIV House Champion! In second place, we had Breakfast For Dinner, as third place went to the Wolfpack!
Next week’s first category: TV Moms
Thrills, chills, and spills! Tonight’s game at Barefoot Bernie’s was action packed! A tense game with the spread never more than six points separating first from third. A few stumpers in the second half brought the spread down to four points going into the incredibly difficult final question. In a photo finish, the Sad Fat Dragons came in third, only one point behind second place Does He Look Like a Biff?. But taking first tonight was Taint Too Proud to Beg.
We’ll see Taint and Biff (that sounds like a cartoon show!) at the playoffs this weekend, while the Dragons are the kingpins of Bernie’s and will be headed directly to World Series SIX at Hager Hall on January 29th, starting at 1:00pm. And welcome to the new team, Make Trivia Great Again. You had a spectacular first showing and we hope to see you back next week!
Next week’s first category: Rugby Rules
First off, I want to say congratulations to We Are Groot (formerly known as Patty Smyth’s Warriors) for locking in Applebee’s House Champion and earning a bid to our World Series on January 29th! It was a close race between them and JuJu and Friends, but with a victory tonight they were able to earn that playoff bye.
We had yet another tiebreaker tonight, which just shows how competitive everyone has been so far this season; I think this was the 3rd or 4th week in a row that we’ve had to resort to a tiebreaker. Coming closer to David Robinson’s career points scored, Wingin’ It was able to edge out We Drink and We Know Things for that 3rd place spot. Here are your top three:
First Place: We Are Groot
Second Place: Not Your Team
Third Place: Wingin’ It
Next week’s category will be Baltimore Orioles Shortstops, so good luck to the teams participating in this weekend’s playoff game and we’ll see you next Wednesday!
Tonight at Clover Theater, we basically had the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyers show. That team led the other eleven teams wire to wire. Even though they went into the final question with a Clavin, they decided to make it dramatic by wagering the maximum and ended up being one of only two teams to answer it correctly.
It was great to see so many teams come out on an incredibly rainy night here in Cloverdale. One more week until the season is over and we award the almost life-size statue of R2-D2.
First Place: Unfrozen Caveman Lawyers
Second Place: The Struggle Is Real
Third Place: Mark’s Angels
Next week’s first category: “Saturday Night Live”
