What a Way to End Wednesday Night Trivia for 2016!
It was a busy Wednesday night during our last week of the year! Five different venues topped double digits in terms of the number of teams battling it out for trivia supremacy. Only a few teams can be considered the Best of the Best, so let’s take a look at the nightly recap:
WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (84 teams across 12 venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Second Place (Valley Grill) an Does He Look Like a Biff? (Barefoot Bernie’s) with 171
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Second Place (Valley Grill) with 165
–> Highest First Half Score: Flight Level Awesome (Belles’) with 93
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Flight Level Awesome, Joe Flack-Holes, Southpaw Fish, Second Place, Blitzed Blitzen, Just the Tip
–> Halftime played to an average of 17.1, with about 10% of our teams scoring 20. About 15% of our teams scored six points on the 6-4-2, by knowing that Burger King released the popular video game “Big Bumpin”
TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (52.2% success rate):
–> Which Central American country uses a national currency called the ‘quetzal’, which is named for the species of bird depicted on its national flag? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
Whole Foods Market in Vienna, VA
It was great meeting all of the new teams and players tonight for our final game of 2016! It was a very close game the entire night, but as usual, the final question was the decider and Pacific Rim came out on top! Here are your final standings:
First Place: Pacific Rim
Second Place: Shiggles
Third Place: King Brian
We’ll be back on Jan. 25, with the first category of Film Flops!

Valley Grill in Middletown, MD
So it was “post-Xmas” goodness here at Valley Grill as we had 11 teams compete in our final game of 2016! We were reminded in round one that “the truth is out there” due to an iconic 90’s TV series, we also visited a couple of foreign capitals experiencing a little American football. For round two we “found” Nemo, did some office filing, and identified a prisoner number. We did some MCU/DC comics as well as some famous Georges in round three, and some Central American trivia for the final. We had to break a tie for 2nd and 3rd tonight, here are the results:
First Place: Blitzed Blitzen
Second Place: Southpaw Fish
Third Place: Fast Forward Not Available
Honorable mention goes to Team Second Place, who earned the highest score of the night, but had to bow out on prizes.
Next week’s first category: “Rudy”
Happy New Year!

The Tavern in Olney, MD
Trivia was live and poppin’ tonight at Olney Tavern! I once again had the chance to fill in for Jon, and I always enjoy the enthusiastic (and intelligent) crowd. I think my favorite answer of the evening had to have been “Con Air,” in response to a question about Broadway musicals. There are movies that would make great musicals, and then there’s “Con Air.” 😛
It was neck and neck right up to the very end, but Drink ’til We’re Cute clinched the win with Moving Forward in second place and Carrie Fisher Fan Club in third. Jon will be back next week, when your Winners’ Choice question will be “Triple 50/50 – Disneyland or Disney World.”
Thanks for letting me play along, I’ll see ya next time!

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD
It was our last night of trivia at Belles’ Sports Bar in 2016, and what a year it’s been with you all! I do love our little get-togethers. Tonight it was all about those boys as Flight Level Awesome was having a guys night out, and all of our other teams only had a single female a piece… I was quite interested in watching it NOT affect the wheelhouse categories. How the hell did Flight Level Awesome know that audio question? I don’t care if you’re a high school teacher, I wasn’t even convinced it was a real song!
Even with the new teams in the mix tonight, it came down to two of our regular major players – Flight Level Awesome and Tokyo Sex Whale! They were strategic to the end, and with a easy grab at that final, it was Flight Level Awesome in first, Tokyo Sex in second and a new name up in lights for third place – the Joe Flackholes! Nicely done!
For next week we start off with a Triple 50/50: Pro Wrestlers or Adult Film Stars? Thankfully, that’s not an audio. Have a great new year and BE SAFE!

Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD
Christmas may have come and gone but there’s no rest for the trivia goers here at Bennigan’s for our game of Pour House Trivia!
Tonight was a night of making tough choices: picking the correct female pop singers, the correct Greek goddesses, the correct Super Hero movies, the correct fictional kids. There were so many times tonight in which everyone was in the ballpark, just made wrong choices in certain categories. The puzzle page was also a lovely reminder of how “meh” our year was. And the final was just about as tough a final as I can imagine tonight, with teams tottering all over Central America looking for the correct answer. In the end though, only one team got the correct answer, which meant fixing a tricky tiebreaker between teams that had fought hard for top spots all night.
After losing a tough tiebreaker tonight, in third place, Momentary Lapse of Reason.
In second place tonight, winning the tiebreaker by a slim margin, Comfortably Dumb!
In first place tonight, leading the whole way and the only team to get the final correct, Tom Brady!
Great game everyone! We’ll kick off our first game of Pour House Trivia of 2017 here at Bennigan’s, with Tom Brady Facts! Study up, and we’ll see you next time.
Until then,
~ Ian
Woodside Deli in Germantown, MD
NO TRIVIA AT WOODSIDE DELI TONIGHT. CHIEF RETURNS NEXT WEEK!
Nido’s Ristorante in Frederick, MD
This week at Nido’s, we opened things up with a question in the category of ‘Triple 50/50: Are They Jewish?’, which actually ended up pretty tough. Turns out most people didn’t know whether Martin Short is Jewish or not (he’s not), but Paula Abdul is! The audio question asked about three songs with the same one-word song title (Sledgehammer) and I’m pretty sure everyone was stumped until the Peter Gabriel version started playing.
Halftime asked teams to identify a bunch of ‘New’ things, as well as answering questions about things that happened in 2016. The final question for tonight was about Geography, Flags, and Currency, and was a pretty interesting question. The question ended up with third place going to Incognido, second went to The Donner Party, and the win tonight went to Team Wednesday, congrats! Next week we start with a question about Italian Food, so study up! I’ll see you all next year!
Until next time,

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD
A good chunk of teams back this week for trivia night. I’d wager most of the holiday travel and festivities ended Monday morning into the night, so Wednesday was no problem! Glad to see everyone back, safe, and hoping all had a good holiday! We saw a lot of returning teams but we also had a few returns after some hiatus. Gold Team has been out of commission for a long, long time and we’ve seen them play back-to-back weeks now! They said maybe next time too, so that’s exciting! Roaming Gnomes had 2 of their players back from vacations, Just the Tip also added a few different faces! Would make for a good game tonight.
We at PHT have a max team size limit of 7 players. We do this because we think it keeps the game as fair as possible without having to turn away too much larger groups. The veteran teams here know that rule is in place, and sometimes are fine with just playing with the big team and settling for playing for fun rather than having a shot at the prizes. Well, tonight, we had some very large crowds; 3 teams with 8+ teammates! I’m not complaining, I love it when we get the numbers here, makes the game more fun and competitive. Unfortunately for those 3 teams, they were playing for pride points only 🙁
Just the Tip commanded the game tonight, winning at the half and carrying through to the second half. The Marvel/DC movie question slipped up a few teams, causing some teams near the top to miss out on their wager. A good chunk of teams were able to pull the wager+2 points, making this one very crucial to the separation of the standings. With that, and a fairly tame 4th round, Just the Tip extended their lead, up by 12 points exactly going into the final question.
Final tonight played quite tough, nearly 40% of the teams coming up with Guatemala. Just the Tip vowed for the 0 bet, forcing the only team that could catch them to come up with a correct response and then beat them on the tie breaker to have a shot at the win. Well, it didn’t matter, Gold Team was in 2nd place and whiffed on the final, giving Just the Tip the relaxing win! For what it’s worth, Just the Tip got the final right any way. 2nd place went to Don’t Call Me Shirley, who won on a tiebreaker clue, 3rd to Roaming Gnomes! Game over, gg, thanks all who came out! That’s 2016! Back in a week with Jan. 2017 trivia. Be there!
Next week’s first category: “Gilmore Girls”
Memories in Mount Airy, MD
We had a PACKED house last night! Fifteen teams battled for dominance, a healthy mix of veterans and brand new teams. And what a finish! I don’t want to spoil it… but I guess that’s the point, isn’t it?… First Night First Place!!
First Place: Half a Brain
Second Place: LOWL
Third Place: Blind Squirrels
Half a Brain takes it down on their first night playing, and selected, “Craft Beers” as next week’s first category!! I’ll see you guys next week!

Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, MD
Tonight at The Furnace in Thurmont, we had a close game all the way until the very end! In some of my previous blogs, you may have noticed that I mention that some of the teams will put the answer “your mother” when they do not know the answer to the question. Well, tonight they were able to meet my mother, as she was a good sport when mentioned that they would be referring to her! Indeed, it was only a matter of time before Breakfast for Dinner answered a question with “your mother”. Tonight, the highest score was turned in by Breakfast for Dinner, but since they were playing ‘over the limit tonight, our top prizes were as follows
First Place: Smarty Pants
Second Place: Wolfpack
Third Place: Soda and the Whatchamacallits
Next week’s first category: “How I Met Your Mother”
Until next time…

Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD
For the final trivia event at Bernie’s in 2016, we were not disappointed. We welcomed back Blank Space and new team Multiple Scoregasms. The old regulars were out in full force, and all seven teams came to play for keeps. A very difficult puzzle page kept the game incredibly tight through the 3rd round, where just three points separated first and third place. The final question had more wager changes than I’ve ever had to keep track of before. Taint Too Proud To Beg took third, while The Sad Fat Dragons came in second. And… Does He Look Like A Biff overtook a small deficit to take first place at 171 points! Great game everyone! See you next week!

Next weeks first category: “Die Hard”
Applebee’s in Waynesboro, PA
We had another great showing tonight at Applebee’s in Waynesboro, with two more new teams coming out to play their first game of Pour House Trivia. We started off the night with the category “Famous Darths” and ended the night with a very tough final that tripped up several teams and resulted in one of our brand new teams, Genderless Penguins, walking away with the “W”. Here were the top three:
First Place: Genderless Penguins
Second Place: Not Your Team
Third Place: We Drink and We Know Things
I hope you all have a safe and wonderful New Year’s and we will see you next week, where the Winner’s Choice category will be Catholic Terminology.

Clover Theater in Cloverdale, CA
The holiday trivia crowd was out in force at The Clover last night. Ten teams competed to win the last trivia crown of 2016. Best wrong answers of the night came from the GENTILE question. We learned that Heretic, Shickta, Infidel, Moyelle, and Muggle are most decidedly not terms generally used to describe a non-Jew.
The Chicken Nuggets led pretty much all game and went into the final category with a 12 point lead over the Brainy Yaks and Let’s Get Quizzical. The Nuggets wagered zero while the Brainy Yaks wagered 12 and got the correct answer which set up our tie breaker. While both teams knew Villanova was founded in the 1800s, the Chicken Nuggets got closer and came up with their second win of the season.
See you in 2017!
First Place: Chicken Nuggets
Second Place: Brainy Yaks
Third Place: Mark’s Angels
