We Went to Overtime for Wednesday Night Trivia!
Let’s get right to the point… The six-point clue on our 6-4-2 question is meant to be the toughest question of the night (even tougher than the final). The difficulty is compounded by the fact that teams only have 60 seconds to turn in an answer. Teams don’t have to guess at that point, but when a six-point clue comes up that seems too easy, there’s probably more to it than that. We saw a prime example with this question last night:
–> Based on the current rules structure, what is the greatest possible margin of victory for an NFL game that ends in overtime?
The percentage of correct answers was close to the expected average, as about 15% of our teams earned six points on this clue. But the kicker was the number of teams who turned in INCORRECT answers after the first clue, which was nearly every other team. The correct answer was nine, not six! You so-called football fans might need a minute to figure that out…
WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (91 teams across 12 venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Flight Level Awesome (Belles’) with 166
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Dusty Baker School of Management (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg) with 156
–> Highest First Half Score: Dusty Baker School of Management with 88
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Dusty Baker School of Management, Flight Level Awesome, Stupider Sexier Flanders
–> Our halftime page proved to be on the easier side Wednesday, with an average of 18.5 and 28% of our teams scoring 20 points.
TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (13.6% success rate):
–> Among former U.S. Presidents that did NOT die in office, who are the only two men to serve less than three years as Commander-in-Chief? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
Valley Grill in Middletown, MD
So I had someone ask me today how many teams we average here at Valley Grill, to which I responded eight to twelve. Well, I was proven incorrect tonight as we had FIFTEEN teams pack into the dining area here for some Pour House Trivia action! Our first half of the game varied quite a bit in subject matter including animated television, acronyms, aquatic mammals, John Williams, noble gases, and these Motown stars:
You could say “what happens on the puzzle page, stays on the puzzle page”, and the second half featured the U.S. Civil War and Tom Hanks co-stars:
We finished with an old school brand of BB gun and some skilled Naval Aviators:
A tough final question scattered the leaderboard. Here are the results of tonight’s game:
First Place: Stupider Sexier Flanders
Second Place: Fast Forward Not Available
Third Place: Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap
Next week’s first category: Here Comes the Metric System!

The Tavern in Olney, MD
We were having some FUN on Wednesday at the Tavern! It was just one of those games where everyone was having a good time and joking with each other. Even the scores were keeping close, so by the time we reached the final question there were two teams tied for first AND two teams tied for third! On top of that, all four of those teams were separated by just one point! The biggest twist of all… the team that ended up winning was in fifth place going into the final, but was smart enough to know that a zero wager could pay off.
We still had to break the tie for second place after the final, so once that was done, we had Warm Weather Fan Club take third, winning the tie for second place was Olney the Lonely, and rolling the dice with the zero wager on the final to shoot from fifth to first was It’s Not A Toomah!!
They picked “Movies Based on Stephen King Novels” for next Wednesdays winners choice, so if you’re looking to have good time with some great people, I’ll see you at The Tavern!!

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD
A good rivalry is just a fun night out. Fun to watch, fun to play against and a blast to announce final answers for! Belles’ is a bit mouthy, a bit full of it and a helluva good time. If you haven’t hung out with us on a Wednesday night, you really should stop in here and check out our shenanigans.
I am not going to wax poetic on tonight’s game – some good times, some wrong times, and at the end we had our clear cut winners! Flight Level Awesome and Kobe Buffalo Meat were tied going in to that last question, but it was FLA who pulled the right pair of presidents for the win! Only team in the bar to do so! Nice job. In 3rd, rounding out the podium was Just Good Enough. Just good enough to hold on to it 😉
Next week we will start with a Triple 50/50: Flyers vs Penguins Rivalry. Should go over well here. hehe.

Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD
As quickly as the weather changes outside, it can change pretty quickly inside Bennigan’s as well during a game of Pour House Trivia!
Highlights of the Night:
In “I-Understand-Why-You-Went-There-But-No”: I understand why Star Wars would be on your mind for a John Williams question, but no, Superman and Star Wars are not the same soundtracks. Come on now! They’re both so iconic! How can you not differentiate them?!
In “Ian’s-One-True-Pleasure”: My parent’s team of Cartographers and Geographers missed the American Geography question! I get to tease them! Yay! And then as an added bonus they got snippy with me over Audra McDonald. Don’t get sassy with me, she’s well known enough that you can’t throw your arms in the air and sarcastically go “ooooooohhh” at me. Not gonna fly!
In “NO-NO-NO-BAD-TEAM”: Come on. U.S. Civil War. U.S. Prison. Auschwitz?! REALLY?! Come on now. And don’t give me “What?! They both begin with an A!” As any sort of excuse! Y’all are wild, let me tell you!
In third place tonight, Big Fact Hunt!
In second place tonight, BTF!
In first place tonight, Momentary Lapse of Reason!
Great game everyone! Next week we’ll kick things off with Ask Your Pharmacist! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!
Until then,
~ Ian
Woodside Deli in Germantown, MD
Woodside Deli opened me with open arms and strong competition the first night I hosted. Contribution, High Water Mark and Alternative Facts swapped the lead every round the entire night. Going into the final round, Contribution had a healthy lead, followed closely by Alternative Facts and High Water Mark. But in the end, High Water Mark was the only team to correctly answer the final, vaulting itself from 3rd into 1st. A nice comeback and a great win!

Nido’s Ristorante in Frederick, MD
We packed the house at Nido’s once again for some Wednesday night trivia, and this week’s game was absolutely an exciting one. We had several lead changes throughout thanks to a few tough questions. The audio question about John Williams film scores was also amusing, with just about everybody mixing up the themes for Star Wars and Superman. Mostly everyone got Harry Potter and Jurassic Park though. The halftime page was fun, asking teams to identify Las Vegas casinos (answers were provided, they didn’t just guess), as well as answering questions with seemingly unrelated answers which were linked together by all being cleaner brands.
The third round included a triple 50/50 video games question caused some real chaos, as teams got stuck with high wagers and it definitely burned a few teams. The final question of the night was a really tough one, and could have really shaken things up. However, there wasn’t any wagering trickery, so it ended up staying mostly the same. Third place tonight went to Incognido’s, while second went to The Donner Party and the win went to Pop Vultures! Congrats!
Next week we start things off with a question about the Broadway show ‘Hamilton’ (I swear I didn’t have any input on this) so study up! Don’t worry, it won’t be an audio clue. I’ll see you all then!
Until next time,

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD
Dusty Baker School of Management started off Season XV right where they left off last season. They’ve played World Series twice and finished 1st of 90+ and 2nd of 90+, and this season they’re looking to claim a house championship too! Dangerous trio, watch out teams!
Tonight was no different than it usually is when Dusty Baker is around; they were winning for most of the game. At the half, they were up three points, which actually is a closer game than usual with them at full strength. After the 3rd round, I actually tried to cheat them outta some points but they caught me! It’s Time to Get Schwifty was pretty close for most of the game but they faltered on the 6-4-2 (as did most teams) and the 4th round, moving from a three-point game to pretty far back…
Roaming Gnomes held composure and were able to pull into 2nd place before the final question. Dusty Baker led by eight points so of course they bet five on the final. Most everyone else bet the maximum of 12. It was a toughie tonight, a U.S. Presidents question in which only two teams came up with the correct answer. Roaming Gnomes got it, securing 1st or 2nd place depending on Dusty Baker… Okay okay, I’ll kill the suspense… Dusty Baker nails the final too, winning tonight’s game, two in a row to start off season XV!
Good game tonight, back next week to see what happens!

Memories in Mount Airy, MD
At Memories in Mount Airy, it’s always an exciting, high-scoring night, thanks to the fact that two of our regular teams finished in the Top 25 at last season’s World Series. The best rivalry in Pour House Trivia continued this week, as a field of nine teams competed for a spot on that podium.
It was a close game throughout, and most of the field breezed through the first three rounds. And then that 6-4-2… What a massacre. Only one team scored more than zero.
In the end, scores were tight, and a lot of teams were in contention. Who took it down?
First Place: Satan’s School for Girls
Second Place: Sexual Chocolate
Third Place: Blind Squirrels
Satan’s School for Girls took it down this week, and selected the general-yet-impossible-to-study-for “Baseball” as next week’s first category. What could it be?

Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, MD
Tonight at the Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, we had a blast and a big thanks to Kelly from Wolfpack for celebrating her birthday with trivia night. The first category of The Kardashians was chosen by Wolfpack since they were last week’s winners. However, one of the teams which knew the answer was Breakfast for Dinner, who was showing friendly trash talk by saying “nice try”. Breakfast for Dinner backed up that trash talk as they took home the win. In second was the Member Berries, and in third was Wolfpack.
Next week’s first category: “The Walking Dead”

Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD
This was one of the closest games I’ve ever seen! At the end of the third round, three veteran teams were all tied for first place. One team eeked out a two-point lead going into the final, but a rather difficult final question left us with Alternative Answers in third, Sad Fat Dragons in second, and Pen Island came out on top.

Applebee’s in Waynesboro, PA
Thanks to everyone for coming out to Applebee’s in Waynesboro tonight, even with the impending snow on the horizon. We had another great game, with one of our more brutal 6-4-2 questions taking out all but one team on the 6-point clue. Our final was also a tough one as well, but by betting strategically Bees? was able to hold onto their lead and claim victory. Here’s your top three:
First Place: Bees?
Second Place: Wingin It’
Third Place: Not Your Team
I hope everyone weathers the storm okay, and we’ll see you next week where the first category will be “Star Trek: The Original Series”.

Clover Theater in Cloverdale, CA
An extremely close game here on yet another rainy night in Cloverdale. Is the drought over yet? The Brainy Yaks and The Unfrozen Caveman Lawyers went into the final question separated by just one point. As it turned out, nearly every team remembered Gerald Ford, but no one remembered Millard Fillmore (poor, forgotten Millard Fillmore) and the Brainy Yaks were able to hold onto their slim margin and seal the victory. We’ll be back next week as our season rolls on!
First Place: Brainy Yaks
Second Place: Unfrozen Caveman Lawyers
Third Place: Let’s Get Quizzical
