We Finished Up 2016 Trivia with Style!

As we close the books on 2016, we had one last night of trivia, as most of our venues were stuffed with competitive teams.  Three venues topped more than 15 teams last night, which means that reaching the list of the overall best teams, involved a lot of knowldege and a little luck.  Here are those top teams:

THURSDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (67 teams across nine venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s) with 165

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s) with 160

–> Highest First Half Score: Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s) and PC Principals (Fish Market) with 88

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): There must have been a couple of stumpers on last night’s set, as NO TEAM managed to answer every wagering question correctly.

–> The halftime page played to average of 16.2, with four teams scoring a perfect 20: Clever team Name, Lowered Expectations, Power Vacuum, and You’re Killing Me Smalls.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (77.5% success rate):

–> In 1998, José Saramago became the first writer in which language to win a Nobel Prize for Literature?  (you’ll find the answer in this blog)

Quincy’s in Gaithersburg, MD

The last game of Pour House Trivia at Quincys of 2016 went out with a bang! Or a confused whimper. One or the other.

Highlights of the Night:

In “Overthought-Question-of-the-Night”: Terrible lizard in Greek. Paleontologist. Saurian reptiles. Come on gang, this one wasn’t supposed to be a tricky one.  If I wanted a specific dinosaur there would’ve been some description there!

In “Umm-What-the-Heck?”: I’ve never seen the case where two teams put such eeriely similar but different but the same wrong answers before.  I can’t even explain it, and it only left me more confused.  On the TV show question, one team put “The Garry Shandling Show, starring Larry Sanders”.  The other team put “The Larry Sanders Show, starring Garry Shandling”.  I honestly have no idea what the real show is, but there’s clearly a show with one of those names.

In “Photo-Finish”: Whenever a tiebreaker calls for a year, it can be either drastically different answers or ridiculously close ones. Tonight our teams were both off by about 40 years but within 5 years of each other. Who would come out on top?

In third place tonight, Blue Collar!

In second place tonight, the Fan Club!

In first place tonight, Lowered Expectations!

Great game everyone! We will kick things off in 2017 with a category called Demolition Man; Movie or Song! Whatever that means…Study up, and we’ll see you next time!

Until then,

~ Ian

Demolition Man Film Trivia

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

It’s almost the final day of the strange limbo between Christmas and New Year’s.  I don’t know about you guys, but it it wasn’t for your familiar faces, I wouldn’t know what day it was!  I missed you last week, it was nice to be back with you all!  I heard that you were all well behaved last week 😉  Fourteen teams had one last throw down for 2016 – I know the new year will bring us more of the good stuff though!  Don’t forget to block out your calendars – Playoffs are Jan 21nd, and World Series 14 is throwing down on Jan 29th.  Don’t miss the pub crawl!

I had a good time watching you all tonight, some new (and mouthy!) faces kept us on our toes tonight and the A game was on point.  I was impressed with how many of you snagged the final!  It didn’t work out for everyone however, and the ties were broken.  Vitrifiers would have been reigning supreme tonight but they had too many players on the field and had to take the pride but not the prize. On the final podium it was Serenity Now in 3rd, Just Good Enough in 2rd, and Power Vacuum in 1st!  Taking home the honors for the last time this year… our first category in 2017 will be The Great Lakes. See you then, be safe this weekend.

Bunker Sports Cafe in Leesburg, VA

Back at Bunker Sports Cafe for our final game of 2016!  The first round found Hannah Montana murdered, Vince Chase employed, and John Wetteland setting an as of yet unmatched World Series record.  Round two had the Stones in Cuba, some Sly Stallone raspberries, and some choices regarding locations around the globe.  Third round featured black-eyed peas that don’t sing, and a less than happy time in which a New Year’s tradition was suspended. Our final round contained subject matter 65+ million years old as well as some more New Year’s Eve events. I hope you all have a very safe and happy New Year. Here are the results:

First Place:  Cranius Maximus

Second Place:  Thoroughly Screwed

Third Place:  Your Mom

Our first category for 2017 is the New Testament

Links at Challedon in Mount Airy, MD

Tonight at The Links at Challedon, we had a close game towards the end of the fourth round, as Tres Hermanos came back to try and take down their other family members on The Sharpies!  The turning point of the game that really put it away for the Tres Hermanos was the final question of the fourth round dealing with historical events that occured on New Year’s Day.  Tres Hermanos was able to get it and the bonus to seal the moral victory over their family members.  But taking home the victory for the rest of the competition was Balls Out, with Tres Hermanos in second and Italian Stallions in third!

Our first category upon our return will be “Star Wars”.  See you then!

It’s always crazy here at Smoketown Brewing in Brunswick.  We had a birthday, and the restaurant was at full capacity.  For four rounds, we had a close and crazy game, but The Scoundrels took the victory for the third straight week!  There was also a tie breaker for third which Rebel Scum took third place.  Here are the results:

First Place:  Scoundrels

Morgan Ridge Railwalk in Salisbury, NC

After a great Christmas, Morgan Ridge Railwalk was back and ready for another great Trivia Night.  We had four teams playing tonight, with two of them including the full size of seven people.  They went head to head with some interesting questions this trivia night.  Two teams were neck and neck the entire game, The A-Team and Happy Birthday Georgi.  The A-Team consisted of two people that won here on Opening Night.  So, The A-Team was back to reclaim their thrown.  But, even though The A-Team brought their “A” game it was not enough.  The final question witnessed all teams going for 12 points except for Happy Birthday Georgi, who risked four 4 points.  All of our teams got the final question right, but The A-Team came up one point short and Happy Birthday Georgi came out victorious.  I guess just betting those four points paid off. C an not wait for another exciting night of Trivia this week at Railwalk Brewery!

Brooksville Brewing in Spring Hill, FL

A fantastic close to 2016!  The blackberry wines were flowin’ as we celebrate the end of this tumultuous year.  We’ve had lots of new-comers again this week, and one team that rose all the way to the top to take the gold!  An incredibly close win, too, because the team coming in second only lost by a 2 point margin!  I had a great time this year with Thursday night trivia at Brooksville Brewery, and I’m looking forward seeing everyone next year!  Here are your final standings:

First Place:  SPH 4

Second Place:  Britt’s Team

Third Place:  Jess

Next week’s first category:  U.S. Presidents

US Presidents

Fish Market in Alexandria, VA

We had another fantastic night of trivia here at the Fish Market in Alexandria.  PC Principals have been aching for another trivia night as they’ve seen themselves fall short of a win 2 weeks in a row now.  We had a HUGE crowd out here tonight looking to make sure that streak of losses stayed alive, but PCP looked like they weren’t gonna have it.

PCP led at the half, per the use (that’s short for “usual”), looking like they were gonna start building up a win streak after tonight. Round 3 got a bit rough for them, missing the Sci-Fi TV question, which was their 5 point bonus chip! Missing out on that (which I was told was the first time they’ve EVER missed their 5 point bonus…) set them back just a smidge, but they still remained in the lead.

Going into the final, PCP had an 8 point lead. It would’ve been a runaway if they’d not slipped up on that bonus chip in the 3rd, but alas, they were still in good position to win it.  A duo called Best Year Ever! were in 2nd place, hoping PCP missed another big question, looking to potentially take down this big game. Best Year Ever! did pick up a correct response on the final, but unfortunately for them, so did PC Principals.  That’s the game! 1st to PCP, 2nd to Best Year Ever! 3rd place to You’re Killing Me Smalls, back after a short hiatus!

That wraps up 2016. It was good one! We’re back in one week with the first game of January and 2017! Let’s get this started off right! See you guys in a week.

Guido’s in Frederick, MD

Last Thursday, our game at Guido’s Speakeasy was bittersweet, as one of our regular players Ryan Hendren is moving away. His sportsmanship, humor and SASSY character will sorely be missed and I’m happy I can call him my friend, good luck Ryan!! In 3rd place we had Unathletico Madrid, 2nd went to The B Sharps, and there’s nothing like a win for your last game so you can go out on top, Spitters are Quitters got the 1st place victory!! Ryan decided to pick something fun for everyone, so he chose “Quantum Physics” for this Thursdays winners choice! Thanks for all the good times Ryan, and I’ll everyone else at Guido’s on Thursday!
