Three New Venues to Welcome to the PHT Family!

It seems like we’ve been adding new venues left and right the last few weeks, and Wednesday night was no exception, as we opened Pour House Trivia at THREE new venues: Nido’s Ristorante in downtown Frederick, the Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, and Applebee’s in Waynesboro, PA.  That’s right, there is now Pour House Trivia in five states and DC!  There were some very happy teams that each took home $50 in cash for their efforts.  Let’s take a look at the rundown:

WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (71 teams across 13 venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Front of the Class (Woodside Deli) with 168

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap (Valley Grill) and Multiple Scoregasms (Bennigan’s – Frederick) with 160

–> Highest First Half Score: Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap (Valley Grill) with 89

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Front of the Class (Woodside Deli) and Stupid Sexy Flanders (Valley Grill)

–> Halftime was not particularly difficult, yielding an average of 16.5, but there must have been one or two very tough questions, as NO TEAM scored a perfect 20.  The 6-4-2 question was easier than average, with about 40% of our teams knowing that the Winnie the Pooh lives in a house which bears a sign reading “Mr Sanders”.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (41.9% success rate):

–> During the late 1880s, which engineer was given the nickname of “Magician of Iron”?  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Whole Foods Market in Vienna, VA

First blog here for Whole Foods Vienna! A record amount of teams came out tonight for a rockin’ time at Vienna. We learned a lot, including that those cover versions of TV theme songs drove everyone crazy! It was a close game overall, including a third place tie!

First Place:  No Reservations

Second Place:  YOLO Gs

Third Place:  Shiggles

Next month’s first category (Dec. 28):  Pasta!  Stay Al Dente folks!

Valley Grill in Middletown, MD

Well, we had ourselves a little break for the Thanksgiving holiday, but we are back and better than ever for some Wednesday night Pour House Trivia here at Valley Grill.  Wile E. Coyote certainly knew the answer to one of our first round questions, but folks did struggle a bit with some very unique versions of some TV show themes.  Monica was nowhere to be found on the puzzle, and both the third and final rounds proved to be of little difficulty to these fine trivia players.  Here are the final results:

First Place:  Southpaw Fish

Second Place:  Drunk Savants

Third Place:  Stupid Sexy Flanders

Next week’s first category:  “School of Rock”

The Tavern in Olney, MD

Even though the weather was gross, we still had a good turnout for our Wednesday night game at The Tavern! Now, I’m not sure if it had something to do with the weather, but it was kind of a weird night. Teams that usually do well seemed slightly off, and teams that sometimes struggle were doing better! But after the final question was answered, this is how it ended… Making an IMPRESSIVE move from 6th to 3rd was Moving Forward! 2nd place went to the Matt Damon Fan Club, and holding on to a 1st place victory was a very happy Olney The Lonely!! They’re going with “The Works of John Irving” for next weeks winners choice, so study up and I’ll see everyone next Wednesday at The Tavern!!

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD

Every host deserve a Belles’. Every host should know the joy of spending a night with teams who are friends (all the good and bad that means!) To recap. I nailed the Cantonese, butchered the opera. We sang the Friends theme song and laughed our way through round 2. If you haven’t checked out Belles on a Wednesday night you really should. We have a good, if somewhat inappropriate time. .hehe. Hey- I even gave you scores this week!

I could wax poetic about the game but frankly the story tonight is the winners choice for next week so let’s get right down to it. Last on the podium but first in our hearts (Have an amazing wedding and we will see you in a few weeks!) it was Periodic Table Dancers! 2nd went to Flight Level Awesome. and 1st went to the dastardly Tokyo Sex Whale. Don’t believe me that they are dastardly?  The first category for next week is Triple 50/50 Sam Sings Christmas Carols – Burl Ives or Bing Crosby.  Oh yeah. That’s happening. That’s what I get for singing along with the audio.

Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD

After an unexpected hiatus for Thanksgiving, we were back in action for another action-packed game of Pour House Trivia tonight at Bennigans!

Highlights of the Night:

In “Groovy-Beats-Man”: The Audio clue tonight was fun times tonight; we definitely need more unique cover songs! I will say though, disappointed in the fam. I watched enough episodes of Pokemon as a kid that they should’ve known that one!

In “Selective-Memory”: Every once in a while a question comes along that makes me all itchy for how the answers come out. Wuthering Heights was a solid pull tonight, with most of the teams catching it. The 2-point bonus was much trickier. The itchy feeling comes from the fact that more than half of the teams knew Heathcliff, but didn’t know Catharine. How does that happen? Like, none of the three teams who knew Catharine didn’t know Heathcliff, but the other seven knew Heathcliff but didn’t know Catharine…like I said, it makes me all itchy.

In “What-In-The-World”: Seriously, it’s been hours now, and I still have no idea who the Ottowa Redblacks are or what the Grey Cup is. How do you guys know this?? Why are you familiar with this particular piece of knowledge??

Correct answers were key on the final tonight!

Honorable Mention to Goonies Never Say Die; top three in points but had a few too many participants unfortunately 😉

In third place tonight, Simple Minds!

In second place tonight, Momentary Lapse of Reason!

In first place tonight, Multiple Scorgasms!

Great game everyone! Next week we’re gonna start on a dark note, with our WC category being Serial Killers! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!

Until then,

~ Ian

Woodside Deli in Germantown, MD

Well folks, tonight was the Mother Lode.  Over the course of the evening, eight different teams played Pour House Trivia tonight, a new Woodside record!  Pour House is so appreciative of the new players — it was fun!

What is perhaps more common, though, was dominance from Front of the Class – and they’re only fielding three players! Other teams need to bone-up and challenge these perennial favorites. That being said, they are a consistently dominant team. Which reminds me! Pour House Trivia’s World Series of Trivia 14 will be played on 29 January — stay tuned for time and location.  Your three finishers for the week:

First Place:  Front of the Class

Second Place:  We Need a Do-Over

Third Place:  Kickin’ Cancer

Next week’s first category:  Pearl Harbor, of course!!

Glad to be back, Woodside.  Fair Winds,

~ Chief

Nido’s Ristorante in Frederick, MD

Tonight was our very first night of trivia at Nido’s!  Trivia at Nido’s started out appropriately enough with a question about Italian desserts, asking about the delicious dessert of Tiramisu.  We also had an audio question with TV theme song covers, with my favorite being the Pokemon theme.

The final question was pretty tough, asking about 19th century Americans. Only one team got the final, but it didn’t change enough. Third place went to Dalek Dance Party, second place went to Fat Guy and Glasses, and tonight’s winners are Team Wednesday! Next week we start with a question about classic films of the year 1939, so study up, there’s only a handful. I’ll see you all next week!

Until next time,

~ Chad

Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, MD

Tonight was opening night at the Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont!  First off, we’d like to thank all the teams who showed up: eight teams is quite a wonderful start to our tenure here.  Our field included several PHT veterans mixed in with some players enjoying our game for the first time, and it made for quite a competitive atmosphere.  The crowd’s favorite question of the night asked which form of transportation (among train, car, boat, and plane) is NOT considered by Sam-I-Am in the Dr. Seuss book “Green Eggs and Ham”.   The answer was ‘plane’, which lead to cheers for most teams!’

Our winners tonight were Comfortably Dum, who took home a crisp new $50 bill for their efforts.  I wonder how they’re going to divide that up?

Here are our final standings on Opening Night:

First Place:  Comfortably Dum

Second Place:  Panty Droppers

Third Place:  Gateway

Next week’s first category: 1980s Music Videos

Until next time,

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD

Missed you guys last week! And to think all we had to come back to was the pouring rain… I’m sorry we didn’t get a sunny, sunny welcome BUT we did have a great game of trivia to make up for it! Thanks for coming out tonight, we had a few newcomers but mostly our veteran squad at Bennigan’s tonight! Been off for 2 weeks so we’d pick up where we left off with a “Peaky Blinders” question, courtesy of Downtown Dinky Town. DT DT (that’s the abbrev. I guess?) would see how their luck would fare tonight as they tried for 2 in a row!

Don’t Call Me Shirley was making some noise tonight, holding the lead after the half by a significant 5 point margin. Roaming Gnomes is a team that is NEVER out of a game because of how consistently they play throughout the 2nd half despite an edge-up in the difficulty of the set. Some teams take a hit but Roaming Gnomes always shines! Shirley couldn’t hold on to their lead, dropping a few places and letting the Gnomes sneak into the lead after the 6-4-2.

That was just about all she wrote as Roaming Gnomes coasted through the 4th and held a 10 point lead going into the final question, just enough to insure a win unless they missed and every other team got the answer right. No chance for them to lose tonight as they pick up a correct response and take down the win! 2nd place actually goes to DT DT who got the final and leap frogged Shirley (a zero bet in fear of the category), Shirley taking 3rd tonight. Thanks fo coming out guys, we’re back next week for our first DECEMBER GAME! The holiday season is soon to be upon us! Until then 😉

Memories in Mount Airy, MD

We closed out November with a spirited game of trivia, marked by close scores, a ceiling leak, and a come from behind win!  Plus, we got a cautionary tale on pai gao!

First Place: Sexual Chocolate

Second Place: Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me

Third Place: Team Awesome

Sexual Chocolate took it down with a final question snipe! They selected Archaeologists as next week’s first category, so “BONE” up and I’ll see you next week!

Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD

Welcome to Barefoot Bernie’s, where everyone is a winner!  Sometimes, trivia night is a knock down drag out fight to the finish, and sometimes it’s close-quarters combat.  With a field full of veteran teams, the game was never more than a four-point game from first to last.  Even at the end of the third round, first place and third place were only separated by one point.  In the end of a harrowing game, here is how our standings finished:

First Place:  Sad Fat Dragons

Second Place:  Does He Look Like a Biff?

Third Place:  Taint Too Proud To Beg

Next week’s first category:  Liberia

Applebee’s in Waynesboro, PA

We had a great showing for our opening night at Applebee’s in Waynesboro, with seven teams showing up and giving it their all in what turned out to be a great game!  We started our relationship out with a beer, and ended it with a final question that asked teams to list ingredients (other than tomatoes) that can be found in a V8, which is a lot more difficult than you’d originally think.  We even had to resort to a tie breaker at the end; that’s just how close of a game this was.  Here were your top three:

First Place:  JuJu and Friends

Second Place:  Bees?

Third Place:  Patty Smythe’s Warriors

Next week’s first category: Iowa

Clover Theater in Cloverdale, CA

Nothing stops trivia at The Clover. Not even a 20-minute blackout. The lights went out in the middle of Round 4 but we allowed all 8 teams to use their phones for flashlight use only and the trivia continued without a hitch. Mark’s Angels had a seven-point lead going into the final question but The Laughy Taffeez were able to leap frog them to sew up their third win in five nights.

First Place: The Laughy Taffeez

Second Place:  Mark’s Angels

Third Place:  The Brainy Yaks

Next week’s first category:  The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team
