Tuesday Trivia Rocks! (Much Like a Certain Great Lakes City)
Tuesday night trivia means we’re declaring a dozen different teams winners tonight! But even better, we have some great news for teams that used to play out in Bel Air. Our newest venue, Stone’s Cove Kitbar, kicked off Pour House Trivia tonight! It’s always a wonderful feeling to introduce new players to Pour House Trivia. Hopefully, we’ll have a few of those new teams making the trek to Hagerstown in three months (Can it really be THAT soon?). For the rest of you, let’s take a look at our top teams tonight. Here are our top teams tonight, although there is certainly a bit of repetition on tonight’s scoreboard:
TUESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (91 teams across 12 venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Notch 8 (Champion Billiards) with 176
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Notch 8 (Champion Billiards) with 166
–> Highest First Half Score: Notch 8 (Champion Billiards) with 91
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Show Me On the Doll (Cap City Brewing), Poovey Farms (Tilted Kilt)
–> About 10% off our teams scored a perfect 20 on tonight’s halftime page, while only six teams landed six points on the 6-4-2, by remembering that Duran Duran is the only act to take a James Bond film theme to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
–> Although most teams THINK that it tends to be an easier category, our toughest question of the night was the Three Clues / One Word question, yielding correct responses from only 35% of our teams overall, with only four teams earning a two-point bonus. (not fans of Liz Taylor’s perfume, eh?)
–> At Tilted Kilt in Frederick, Poovey Farms remains perfect on the season, running their winning streak to five games. The same goes for the Avengers at Zepheira Sports Bar in Hagerstown. At FireFlies in Alexandria, the Milwaukee Beers have won in four straight appearances (although this is not an OFFICIAL four-game winning streak, as they took a week off in between two of the wins).
TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (59.2% success rate):
–> This city founded in 1796 has a current population of just under 400,000 residents. It is the only CURRENT NFL home city which has NEVER had a team play in the Super Bowl, and has NEVER hosted a Super Bowl. What is this city? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
We love us some topical humor here at Cap City trivia night, and this election year has given us plenty of fodder for punning team names and jokey wrong answers. Tonight, though, our host felt compelled to warn the crowd to keep it all family-friendly in the wake of an un-bah-leeve-ably NSFW news cycle. Some great team names: “Trump Groped Harambe”, “Locker Room Talk”, and “Potted Plant for President” all came out to play. (The last one, I think, works as a Gary Johnson endorsement on multiple levels)
The question set was a doozy, with some real stumpers where you normally wouldn’t expect them – celebrity couples, anyone? Or what word can refer to a fruit, a perfume, and an R-rated hit movie? (And FYI, no matter what Westworld may tell you, our trivia Newcomers are not free to act as they wish without retaliation from the Host.) More than a few teams came up big with correct answers for the Final, but Team “Show Me on the Doll” had amassed a large enough lead by that point to land comfortably in first place – their second win in a row! Did someone say “dynasty”? Your top three:
First Place: Show Me on the Doll
Second Place: Locker Room Talk (a.k.a. the Valley Girls)
Third Place: Trump Groped Harambe (a.k.a. Hillary Did Harambe)
Next week’s first category: Evil Dead franchise (staying with the Halloween spirit) #2spooky4me
Let’s talk about points! You guys were putting some big numbers up on the board tonight! With little wiggle room in our top three, teams broke hard out of the gate and fought over a little bit of rail space for the whole game. Always interesting to see who’s willing to make the hard, fast decisions which can shift them in the standings. A couple of our teams tonight went all in on a big human anatomy question and it came back to bite them. Can’t win them all…
Speaking of winning them all, our winners tonight are no stranger to the top of the podium – And We’re All Out of Bubblegum! Second went to Comfortably Dum, congrats on nailing that final – way to break a trend 😉 Third was that Other Sarah team who are making a name for themselves in our Tuesday nights! Fun game tonight, thanks for coming out. Next week we will start with an audio clue – Real brothers or fake brothers? Should be a good one!
First Place: Notch 8
Second Place: Comfortably Dum
Third Place: The Other Sarah
Next week’s first category: Real or fake brothers (AUDIO)
Thanks again to everyone down here at Cugini’s for coming on out for another fine game of PHT. Our highlight question of the night seemed to be our 80’s film category, I was told to pass on kudos to our writing staff on that one. The final really “moved the chains” for a couple of teams tonight as well. Here are the results:
First Place: Five Must Get Beers
Second Place: Never Mind
Third Place: Damn Maidens
Next week’s first category: “Narcos”
Our Tuesday night game at Orioles Nest started with a question about Superman villains, and gave teams a 50/50 on three different names, asking whether they were Superman villains or Pokemon, which is a pretty funny concept. We had a close game all evening, and concluded with a tie after Round 4. Our final question dealt with Sports Geography, as it turns out that the only current NFL city to never have a team play in a Super Bowl, as well as never hosting a Super Bowl, is the city of Cleveland. Poor Browns…
About half our teams were able to come up with the correct response, which also ended up breaking the tie or first place! Here’s how the final standings played out:
First Place: His and Her Peas
Second Place: Suck It Trebek
Third Place: Black Steel
Next week’s first category: “Billy Madison”
Until next time,
Another game is in the books, and a streak has been extended! No, not the streak of me butchering a foreign language pronunciation… or the streak of bashing the career of Kurt Russell. Teams stayed close through the first half, but Poovey Farms really pulled away from the pack, so far ahead that they didn’t need to wager anything on the final to secure a fifth consecutive win! Impressive performance! Here are your final standings:
First Place: Poovey Farms
Second Place: FNQ
Third Place: Book Club Babes
Next week’s first category: Lin-Manuel Miranda (Poovey Farms has gone back to the wheelhouse for next week…)
See you next week,
There may be a chill in the air outside, but there was a fire lit under my teams tonight for our game of Pour House Trivia at Senor Tequilas!
Highlights of the Night:
In “Over-Estimated-Question-of-the-Night”: While the TV show itself might not be that well known, I thought for sure everyone would get the “Van Helsing” question, simply because we gave not only Bram Stoker, but also that the main character was a vampire hunter’s daughter. Yet, it was one of the toughest questions of the night it seems; I haven’t watched the show to comment on it, but I still thought y’all would’ve pulled that one. Tough crowd!
In “I-Had-It!-Damnit!”: I got through Ileum, Jejunum, and Duodenum on the first try without issue, and I was super proud of myself because that is a tricky trio. And then, the tongue just tied itself in a knot and laughed at me mercilessly. Why must there be such ridiculous words when I’m running on fumes and coffee?! Grrr!
In “Crank-It-To-Eleven”: I think we should always have a Spinal Tap question in every set. The sheer amount of joy and laughter that comes from getting a Spinal Tap question correct always seems to be high, a nice pick-me-up at the end of the set. Especially when it’s something silly like tonight’s question; I must get on IMDB at some point to investigate further!
The final was a tricky one, but eventually the answers came out, so after a long deliberation we had our podium.
Honorable Mention tonight goes to Beer Pressure; they had the top score, but they did it with 10 people, not exactly a fair fight!
First Place: The Fan Club (after a little bit of a comeback)
Second Place: Axl’s Doughouse
Third Place: Team Spret
Next week’s first category: Judaism (in honor of Yom Kippur starting tonight)
Great game everyone! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!
New teams continue to form at Fireflies, and it has led to constant excitement! This week, we welcomed three new teams to the fold. (Editors Note: their names aren’t really fit for the blog) While the final question stood as quite a challenge to the majority of teams, the biggest obstacle of the night was Chief just getting to the bar – the G.W. Parkway was a nightmare. Jokes were told, the Nationals lost, drinks were consumed, and once again Milwaukee Beers were victorious. Here are the final standings this evening:
First Place: Milwaukee Beers
Second Place: Spanish Inquizition
Third Place: Reno 911!
Next week’s first category: The Electoral College
Remember, Fireflies: country music kills. See you next week!
Hard night for questions! The Parrotheads and the Quizknows were neck and neck through out the whole game, making the ending just that much more fun! Parrotheads and the Quizknows had to wager big to come out on top, but with both incorrect answers, the Hot Chicks were able to surpass Parrotheads and win that 2nd place title! We’ll see you next week!
Next week’s first category: First Generation Pokemon
Our Tuesday night game at Zepheira Sports Bar got a little bit crazy for one team! They were down by ten points after the puzzle page, but then kicked into overdrive so after the 6-4-2 question they were tied for 1st! Unfortunately after all that fighting back, they made one major mistake in round 4 which cost them any chance for 1st. In 3rd we had I’m Just Making This Up as I Go Along, finishing in a tough 2nd was Sanford & Son, and extending the win streak another week was the Avengers! Their winners choice pick for next week is “Ancient Egypt”, so study up and I’ll see y’all next week at Zepheira Sports Bar!

We had an 8-team melee tonight at Monkey La La! After the dust settled, Demented and Sad but (t)Social stood victorious! Close behind was Stink Floyd followed by Southpaw Fish, all separated by just one point. It just goes to show that every two-point bonus (and every “PJ Masks” question) counts.
I’d like to give a big thank you to all the teams at Monkey Lala for treating me well! I know you love your Grizzle bear, but I hope I showed you a good time in his absence. He’ll be back next week to hit you up with your Breakfast Club question – the winner’s choice category chosen by Dememted and Sad but Social.
You guys rock, I’d gladly come back and host anytime Denny needs me! Take it easy, Monkeys.
Congratulations to Hilary and Greg from team Sofa King Smart who missed last week for their WEDDING! They spent last week in Nashville getting married and, according to them, have been drunk ever since! This inebriated state did not keep them from playing trivia this week (I got the vibe that two weeks off might put them both into a coma or something).. I half expected Hilary to show up in a wedding dress last Tuesday and just claim that trivia night is more important. All jokes aside, congrats to the newlyweds!
In their first game as a newly married couple, Hilary, Greg, and the whole SFS gang looked very strong, leading for a majority of the game. A perfect halftime page kept them up top, though the lead was not safe as Uncle Jack seemed to be either tied with them or just behind them the entire time.
Going into the final, our juggernaut teams, SFS and Uncle Jack, were in a dead lock tie. Both teams went 12, assuming a double get and wanted to be able to force a tiebreaker. 3rd place going into the final was Screaming Death Monkey who MISSED the final and gave way for The Big Fact Hunt to move into the money. For the tiebreaker, we asked the teams to correctly guess the year of birth for actress Elizabeth Taylor. Uncle Jack guessed 1926, SFS guessed 1932. SFS was exactly right, giving them the victory tonight!
First Place: Sofa King Smart
Second Place: Uncle Jack
Third Place: The Big Fact Hunt
Next week’s fist category: U.S. Civil War
Back next week! Thanks guys!
Tonight was our first night at Stone’s Cove and we had a blast! Our winning team, 11 Years, took down the first place slot riding solo, showing the newbies how it’s done. Jake and Steph had a wonderful date night, with a gift certificate to boot, and Best Gators wasn’t planning on playing, but they heard the tunes and couldn’t resist. Next week our new venue will need to be prepared for the periodic table for winner’s choice. I have a feeling this is a start of a very long relationship!
First Place: 11 Years
Second Place: Jake and Steph
Third Place: Best Gators
Next week’s first category: Periodic Table
