Thursday’s Pour House Trivia hit hockey, literature & drinking!
April 18, 2014
Pour House pub trivia continues its run of fabulous movies, television and general information that you need to know!
First order of business: Slapshot!

Your homework for the weekend? Watch Slapshot, whether it’s your first time, or thousandth. In addition to being Paul Newman’s favorite of his own movies, it’s also the movie that taught him to swear! True story.
We also taught you a little cocktail history – mmm, nothing better than a grimy, used screwdriver in your drink!
So, I don’t know about y’all, but I grew up on The Hardy Boys – read them all the time, absolutely loved them. But…there’s no way Frank and Joe Hardy would have lived to their 18th birthdays, right? I mean, swords, gunplay and crazy driving barely scratches the surface of the insane things they got into!
Stir yourself up a screwdriver and check out the games!
I fear that I have opened a door I can never close by offering all of you fine folks the opportunity to flick me off last week. Every time I tell someone to hold up fingers (to tell me a wager or a bonus category) I get a volley of middle fingers. I suppose it’s my fault, though – I DID open the door!
After we were done giving the finger to Tripp, we had a heck of a game!
We had some new faces join us, and two of them battled their way onto the leaderboard. It shook out like this:
Third place went to We Don’t Kno!
Second place went to Spam, Eggs, Sausage and Spam!
And your winner, an imperssive showing for a duo – Dances with Bees!
We also had some fun wrong answers tonight, to boot! Here’s my top 3 – this was a tough job narrowing it down, I promise you.
The alliterative Nickelodeon show? Where’s Waldo’s Whereabouts?
Betty Ford’s maiden name? Boop! (White was pretty good too!)
The team in Slapshot? The Cleveland Pucks! (Cleveland does, in fact, suck at sports)
I had the pleasure of hosting three stellar trivia games this week on M-T-W. And tonight’s pub trivia quiz at Champion’s was a perfect cap for a great week! It had all the elements of mystery, suspense, plot twists, character development and of course Champion’s own brand of Thursday night laughs! So thank you to all of the teams who made it out to play tonight.
Up until the final it was a race for first between a few teams who jockeyed for position going into the final. A crucial 6-4-2 clustered it even more, but it was Round Four that allowed Horseshoes and Hand Grenades to sit nicely at number one – just ahead of Just Good Enough – going into the final. But…and its a big BUT…never count out a team who knows that old school Dungeons & Dragons was founded by TSR (where my Gygax fans at..woot woot!!). Aesop’s Foibles put a nasty little defensive wager down and CASHED IN ON IT for the win! Great job Aesop’s! The rest was history, and the final scoreboard looked like this:
1st: Aesop’s Foibles! – EXCELLENT DEFENSE ON THE FINAL FTW!
2nd: Horsehoes and Hand Grenades – great game all night tonight HHG!
3rd: Just Good Enough – nicely done JGE.
4th-5th: Gators and Cha Chas – go’head yall 🙂
Thanx again for playing tonight everyone. Next Thursday night we kick off with a “Bible Trivia” question. And With that said, I wish everyone who celebrates it a very Happy Easter. If you do not…I wish you a very Happy weekend. Be well…see ya soon. dg 🙂
New comers coming in and playing out of their minds, I tell ya!… A team from another venue decided to come scope out the Fish Market, and they did not hold back!
The Rubber Sheets Club came in and put on a clinic, being up by a whopping 17 points going into the final question and running away with the game! Grats, hope to have you guys back soon; we enjoy the competition 😉 Second place went to our veterans at team Seabass, third place held on to by Humantaray, after a very tough final question. We’ll see you all next time!
It was an exciting game at Guido’s Speakeasy tonight for trivia! A good team turnout and some hard questions kept the field even for most of the night, but some separation did start happening towards the end of the game.
I had a clear first, second and third going into the final question, but after the wagering and the question, I now had a two-way tie for first place!
The tie-breaker question was SUPER close as well, one team went 1927 and the other went 1928 for the question of what year the Hardy Boys first came out… and the answer was 1927! One team was EXACTLY right, so this is how we ended up… In third place tonight was T.N.C., suffering second place after a tough tie-breaker was None Pizza With Left Beef, and the first team to ever give me an exact correct answer for the tie-breaker, your winner tonight… Stink Floyd!!
Great game to everyone, and your winner’s choice category for next Thursday is “U2“, so study up and I hope to see everyone back next Thursday night at Guido’s!!!
What a finish at Qunicy’s in Gaithersburg on Thursday night. As we ended round four, our top five teams were separated by a mere three points! But NONE of them managed to get the correct response on the final, and so it was Second Place is First Loser who came back from 8th place to take the win! Great job! Lowered Expectations turned in another fine performace to take second, with Captain Awesome and the Wonder Friends sneaking into third on the tiebreaker. Next week begins with a question on WWII Weaponry. ~ Matt
