Thursday Trivia Stands Tall, Bub!

alt text

As part of Thursday’s 254-team evening with Pour House Trivia, four of the 23 venues packed the house: Solace Outpost and Aslin Beer Co each hosted 22 teams, while Olde Mother and Mustang Sally Brewing had 20 teams apiece. We also welcomed the Comus Inn back from hiatus!

FIRST ROUND:

In the first round, teams easily handled subjects such as the Nile River, the golfing sand wedge, energy sources, and the five books which comprise the Torah. No question in the round proved particularly difficult and, in fact, 16 teams held on to a perfect score going into the second round.

SECOND ROUND:

A trio of pop culture clips from the year 2001 — the film Ocean’s Eleven, the TV series Fear Factor, and Lifehouse’s hit single Hanging By a Moment — were played in Thursday’s audio clue. Two questions later, we hit a bonus speed bump:

  • Which foreign-born scientist earned the honor of Time Magazine’s Person of the 20th Century?
  • Bonus: With one guess, name either of the two men who were named as the two runners-up for the award.

Most teams correctly named Albert Einstein as that award recipient, but just 13.3% earned bonus credit with an answer of either Franklin Roosevelt or Mahatma Gandhi as a runner-up. After questions about Netflix’s Outer Banks and the non-linear chapters of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, the round concluded with seven teams having recorded a perfect score.

HALFTIME:

Teams were asked to name various celebrities on the top half of the halftime sheet, then move on to match magazines to the famous person who graced their debut issue, such as Braves star Eddie Matthews being the first Sports Illustrated cover athlete. Twelve teams earned a perfect score on the page, which had an average score of 14.6 points. One team snuck just ahead of the scrum at the top of the standings:

THIRD ROUND:

We studied echolocation early in the third round before reaching a question about a certain actress:

  • Penda is the middle name of which actress who has appeared in such films as Hustle & Flow and Hidden Figures?
  • Bonus: For which 2008 film did she earn her only Oscar nomination?

This was the first question that tripped up a majority of the field, as just 34% of teams named Taraji P. Henson; only 5.9% went on to add two bonus points for knowing she received an Oscar nomination for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. We wrapped up the round with this NFL query:

  • Which two Hall of Famers have the most NFL playoff game appearances who never played for the New England Patriots?

Jerry Rice and Peyton Manning were both named by 7.1% of the field for bonus credit. This round had the fewest perfect teams, with three: Rail Splitters (Fourscore), Gong Gong and the Butt Demons (Interchange), and Harbaugh, P.I. (Aslin).

FOURTH ROUND:

Graceland was identified by only six teams for the full six-point boost on Thursday’s 6-4-2. The most difficult question of the night came midway through the last round:

  • Which former NBC crime drama starred Jennifer Lopez as a corrupt New York City detective and FBI informant? You can either name that series or identify the late actor who starred alongside Lopez as Lieutenant Matt Wozniak.

About 21% of teams named either the series, Shades of Blue, or the aforementioned actor, Ray Liotta, but 5.1% knew both answers to earn extra points. Other subjects in this round included Dwight Eisenhower‘s role in Operation Overlord, the Yoo-hoo drink brand, and a three-parter on Stephen King novel characters. This round had six perfect teams. After four rounds of trivia, these were the top scores:

FINAL QUESTION (46.85% success rate):

  • At almost 20,000 feet, Mount Logan is the highest mountain located in which country?

You’ll have to climb pretty high to reach the peak of Mount Logan, the highest mountain in Canada. That answer secured the Perfect 21 for Scotty Doesn’t Know (Solace Brewing) and Harbaugh, P.I. (Aslin). The night ended with these overall points leaders:
