Thursday Trivia in Five Words!

New PHT Logo

Solace Outpost led attendance on Thursday with 23 teams as Pour House Trivia brought in 291 teams to 25 locations. Other highly-attended matches took place at Aslin Beer Co (22) and twin 20-teamers at Olde Mother Brewing and Mustang Sally Brewing.

We started with a little tug-of-war before a three-parter about the Apollo 13 mission which launched 54 years ago on Thursday. The final question also took us to space:

  • With a mass equal to about 95 times that of Earth, what is the second-largest planet in our Solar System?
  • Bonus: Named for a female Titan of Greek myth, what is this planet’s second-largest moon?

Rhea was identified by 7.21% of the field. The only perfect teams in this round were Gong Gong and the Butt Demons (Interchange) and Alien Bounty Hunters (Hops N Shine).

The most difficult bonus chance in the game occurred in the audio question, which asked teams to name a trio of song titles that contained the word Open; only 4.12% of teams knew Wide Open Spaces by the Chicks, Open Letter by Jay-Z, and With Arms Wide Open by Creed. Other topics in this round included the Anaheim pepper, the Malcolm in the Middle theme song by They Might Be Giants, and the African country of Somalia. There were no perfect scores in this round.

Famous drummers and literary awards were served up as Thursday’s halftime subjects. The average score was 15.8, but 62 teams turned in a 20-point page. Just one team hit 90 points by the halftime break:

Three of the third round’s five wagering questions stumped a large majority of teams. Early in the round, we asked about state capital locations:

  • How many US state capitals are west of Los Angeles?

There are six: Honolulu, Juneau, Olympia, Salem, Carson City, and Sacramento. This answer had a game-low 10.3% success rate. Two questions later, we gave a question about an author’s shorter tales:

  • Canary in a Cat House, While Mortals Sleep, and We Are What We Pretend to Be are short story collections from which author who passed away exactly 17 years ago?

Kurt Vonnegut was named by 21% of the field. Finally, we looked at an onscreen duo:

  • In which three films did Steve Martin star alongside Rick Moranis?

Just over a quarter of our teams named at least two of Little Shop of HorrorsMy Blue Heaven, and Parenthood. With all that, a perfect score still remained too elusive for any team.

Just nine teams identified Mexico for the full six points in Thursday’s 6-4-2. The final round cooked up some eggplant (or aubergine if you’re British), gave Three Clues about the phrase and justice for all, and hiked the football at New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings games near the Mississippi River. Twenty-eight perfect scores were recorded in this round, the most of any on Thursday. These were the highest scores after four rounds:

FINAL QUESTION (14.09% success rate):

  • Since its full title is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, what is the only Best Picture winner in the decade of the 2000s with a five-word title?

A tough bonus question asked teams to identify No Country for Old Men. The only team to put up a Perfect 21 was Dave Martinez School of Management (Bear Brick Oven)! That team also finished with a comfortable lead over the rest of Thursday’s entrants:
