Thursday Trivia Digs In!

alt text

A whopping 296 teams braved the cold on Thursday to play Pour House Trivia at one of our 24 locations. A few venues even broke the 20-team mark: Aslin Beer Co and Olde Mother Brewing each had 22 teams, while Solace Outpost played host to 20 others!

FIRST ROUND:

After the game started with a question about the retail chain Target, we had this three-parter in which each answer shared its name with an ancient world city:

  • 1)  Founded in 1749, this suburb of Northern Virginia once belonged to the District of Columbia.
  • 2)  Located in upstate New York, this city is home to the stadium formerly known as the Carrier Dome.
  • 3)  The film In the Heat of the Night was set in a fictionalized version of this small Mississippi community.

About 18% of the field received bonus credit for all three correct answers: AlexandriaSyracuse, and Sparta. We ended the round by discussing TV teachers and the 69th birthday of actor and Oscar-winning director Kevin Costner. There were 23 perfect scores in this round.

SECOND ROUND:

Animated movie songs were the subject of Thursday’s audio question. We played songs from Monsters IncCars, and The Princess and the Frog; just under 30% of teams earned their wager, while a game-low 7.09% knew all three answers for two bonus points. Later in the round, we asked this sweet question:

  • Since it is meant to be consumed rather quickly, which pastry is named for the French word meaning flash of lightning?

This actually ended up as the least successful wagering question in any of our four rounds, as the eclair was identified by 22% of the field. Only two teams were perfect in the second round: We the Peephole (Loudoun Kitchen) and Wright Stuff (BBOP).

HALFTIME:

For the top part of the halftime page, teams had to name the country of birth for a set of pictured celebs. After that, they had to name musical artists from a trio of released albums. The average score was 14.7 points out of 20 but coincidentally, 20 teams aced the page. At the halftime break, these were the highest scores:

THIRD ROUND:

After starting the second half with a three-part Disney World question and the creation of Google parent company Alphabet, we hit this current music query:

  • In addition to starring in the remake version of the film White Men Can’t Jump, which rapper currently sits atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart?
  • Bonus: Identify his current #1 song.

Most teams were able to name Jack Harlow, but naming the song Lovin On Me led to a 14.1% bonus rate, the lowest of the second half. This round’s perfect teams were Bruce’s Deuces (Solace Outpost), Dave Martinez School of Management (BBOP), and Straight-Laced Folk (Steinhardt).

FOURTH ROUND:

Eight teams earned all six points in the 6-4-2 for knowing the San Antonio Spurs have the highest all-time winning percentage among current NBA teams; over 40% of teams took a zero with an incorrect guess, however. Thursday’s last round contained topics such as author Shel Silverstein‘s Playboy cartoon-drawing career, Three Clues about Cincinnati, and Breaking Bad chicken chain Los Pollos Hermanos. The last question of the round dealt with a certain university:

  • On May 4 each year, classes at which university pause from noon until 2:00 p.m. as part of an official day of remembrance, marking an event from 1970?
  • Bonus: What is this school’s official athletic nickname?

Kent State was named by most teams, with 21% earning bonus points for the Golden Flashes athletic nickname. A quartet of perfect teams played this round: Hillbilly Geniuses (Belly Love), Just Us (Loudoun Kitchen), Mad Facts: Query Road (Loudoun Kitchen), and Dynasty Guys (Aslin). These teams led the overall standings after four rounds:

FINAL QUESTION (17.91% success rate):

  • Founded in the late 19th century and acquired by Coca-Cola in 2017, which beverage brand bears a name that translates to English as little mole?

While a lot of teams incorrectly guessed Jarritos, just over sixth of the field earned their final wager with the Topo Chico brand! Smartacus (Crooked Run) and Dynasty Guys (Aslin) each posted a Perfect 21 in Thursday’s game. These were the night’s top scores:
