Thursday Trivia Can Sell!

There were 22 venues playing Pour House Trivia on Tuesday for 234 teams. We also started a second night of PHT action weekly at Hops N Shine in Alexandria, VA!

FIRST ROUND:

The only question in this round that was tough for our teams was its last one:

  • Which current late night news show was conceived by ABC in order to update Americans on the latest news from the Iran Hostage Crisis?

While most teams that knew this answer earned bonus points for naming its first host, Ted Koppel, only a third of the field named Nightline. Before that, we discussed brand names that end with O, cartoon nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Mediterranean islands Corsica and Sardinia. A game-high 36 perfect scores were earned in this round.

SECOND ROUND:

Once again, the round concluded with its hardest query:

  • Prior to Titanic, in which film did Leonardo DiCaprio play Jim Carroll, a high school athlete who becomes a drug addict?
  • Bonus: In one of his earliest film roles, who plays Mickey, a homeless drug addict in this film?

The Basketball Diaries was correctly named by 37% of our teams, but just 8.9% knew Mark Wahlberg was also in the film. At the start of the round, we played a trio of songs about waiting, then moved onto scoring a two-point conversion in football and encountering a poltergeist. A quartet of perfect teams played the second round: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (Smoketown), Cat in the Chat (Loudoun Kitchen), We the Peephole (Loudoun Kitchen), and Samurai Trivia Team (Bear Brick Oven).

HALFTIME:

Teams were asked to identify Grammy winners for Best New Artist such as Sheena Easton and Carrie Underwood, then match reality shows to their primary states. On average, teams scored 16.8 out of 20 points. However, 46 teams aced the page for the full 20 points. A pair of 92-pointers highlighted the top of the halftime standings:

THIRD ROUND:

Three Clues about Washington state began things in the second half. Later on, a pair of questions proved to be tough. We hit the country music airwaves for this question:

  • Last week, which country music artist had five songs in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, including the #1 song I Remember Everything?

About 26% of teams identified Zach Bryan, who featured Kacey Musgraves on that song. From there, we moved on to an A+B=C question about board games. Teams had to add these two parts together:

  • A = the number of tiles each player starts with in a game of Scrabble.
  • B = in dollars, the amount of money each player starts with in a standard game of Monopoly.

With respective answers of 7 and 1,500, just under a third of the field had the correct sum, 1,507. Finally, a question about Supernatural‘s crossover episode with the animated Scooby-Doo, Where Are You series saw a game-low 5.1% earn bonus points for naming that episode’s title: Scoobynatural. No perfect scores were achieved in this round.

FOURTH ROUND:

Before we dug into the final round, a 6-4-2 about guitarist Slash granted six points to 28 teams. That fourth round started with topics such as proscuitto and the 1990 Cher and Winona Ryder film Mermaids. The night’s most difficult wagering question showed up at that point:

  • This animal also known as the millionfish might be the most popular freshwater aquarium fish species in the world, but it is actually named for the man who discovered it off the coast of Trinidad back in 1866. What is the name of that fish?

That man was Robert John Lechmere Guppy, and that surname was given by 15% of our teams. Once again, a perfect score eluded our teams here. Before the final question, these were the top teams:

FINAL QUESTION (31.62% success rate):

  • Which nation had not yet hosted the Olympics when it was scheduled to host both the Summer and Winter Games in 1940? Those Games were canceled due to World War II but since then, it has served as host for both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Set for Tokyo City and Sapporo respectively, Japan‘s 1940 Olympic hosting hopes were postponed due to the war. There were no Perfect 21 teams in Thursday’s game. One venue boasted three of the night’s top four overall teams:
