Thursday Night Trivia Tears at Your Heart Strings!

Our Thursday night games this week closed the book on Season XIV.  We crowned our last remaining house champions, and finished off the game with a final question that wreaked havoc on some of our standings.  We did have a few teams that managed to push through the tough questions and end up on top of our overall leaderboard:

THURSDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (71 teams across six venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Wild Bunch (Quincy’s) with 168

–> Highest Score after Round 4: PC Principals (Fish Market) with 158

–> Highest First Half Score: Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s) with 88

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): A tough third round gave us two answers which only about one-third of our teams answered correctly, meaning just one team (Comfortably Dum) landed all 21 wagers correctly.

–> The halftime page played to a relatively normal average of 17.4, with about 15% of our teams scoring a perfect 20.

–> Likewise, the 6-4-2 question about Frito Lay was equally tough, with about 10% of our teams earning six points by knowing that the brand switched to a zero-carbon fleet of delivery vehicles in 2011.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (41.4% success rate):

–> Scientifically known as the chordae tendinae, what is the colloquial name for the tendons which connect the papillary muscles to the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve?  (you’ll find the answer in this blog)

Quincy’s in Gaithersburg, MD

And that’s all she wrote for Season 14 of Pour House Trivia here at Quincy’s and holy cow was our last game of the season a spicy one!

Highlights of the Night:

In “Insert-Pac-Man-Death-Sounds-Here”: The Cookie Monster question.  Hooo boy the Cookie Monster question.  I thought teams might riot after that one.  So many high wagers being dropped on Pac-Man.  About two-thirds of the packed house went for it, which shook up the otherwise fairly reliable standings.  How would things play out?

In “Sorry-Guys-You’re-On-your-Own”: I’ll be the first to admit, I enjoy the sarcastic “Oh, of COURSE, that’s the answer,” on a really obscure question.  Me and my friends did it a lot during our trivia days, but always made sure it was REALLY an obscure one, not just something we didn’t know…  But even I know who Max Headroom is, and I wasn’t even born when he was a big thing.  So when one team went for it tonight on that question, when all but one other team got it right, they found themselves on a bit of an island.  Sorry guys, but you’re on your own there!

In “Tugging-At-The-Vocal-Chords”: Tonight’s final was another question that got the better of a lot of teams. From the sound of it, a lot of people got hung up on the chord part of chordae, and couldn’t get off it. Because of that, we had some last minute podium shifting, with some surprising results!

In third place tonight, jumping up with one of the few correct answers, the Short Bus!

In second place tonight, the Fan Club!

In first place tonight, after a long hiatus, the Wild Bunch!

Great game everyone!  Next week we are in “in-between” season play; good luck to all my playoff-bound teams!  And a hearty congratulations to our House Champions who clinched it tonight, Lowered Expecations!  Well done on a great, if tumultuous, season!  We’ll kick things off next week with a category on Wayne Gretzky; study up, and we’ll see you next time!

Until then,

Wayne Gretzky Trivia

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

Power Vacuum!  Juggernauts!  Hard to beat, they are steady and solid.  They put in the time, and the brain work to take that top House Champs spot yet again on Thursday night at Champions!  Excited to see them at World Series, along with Comfortably Dum who pulled the double venue card and moved on up to the World Series as well.  This is going to be a showdown of epic proportions!

The game tonight was a good one, who knew Cookie Monster could make so many people sad?!  It was a good final question tonight, mixing it up on the board.  Third place would have gone to Syn Storm, but they had too many players on the field and had to take nothing but the pride points.  Taking that podium spot were the gentlemen of East Wind!  Quickly becoming one of my favorite teams, always entertaining.  Second place went to Suck it Trebek and our winners tonight were Comfortably Dum, warming up for the post season in good form! See you at the Pub Crawl this weekend!

What's Happening

Bunker Sports Cafe in Leesburg, VA

We have just ONE POINT as the difference for two teams combating for House Champion here at Bunker Sports Care in Leesburg, and the pressure was ON!  Our first round went fairly well, with a couple of NFL questions thanks to our first category pick, and we had to use the “old plumbing reference” to make clear the difference between voltage and amperage.  No worries.  We lounged in our recliners for round two, and listened to some TV theme songs while thinking about survival cannibalism.  The second half really seemed to beat on the teams a little, but these troopers trudged right on through to the end.  Congrats to Your Mom as House Champions for Season XIV! Here are the results:

First Place:  Thoroughly Screwed

Second Place:  Your Mom

Third Place:  Indians

Smoketown Brewing in Brunswick, MD

Smoketown Brewing!  We had a very fun night of trivia. While I had a technical malfunction you guys always keep my spirits high (thanks for the beers!).  We learned a lot about Cookie Monster (and not Pac-Man) and that heart strings are actually a thing.  After the final question, we had a tie for first!  After the tiebreaker, here is how the final standings looked:

First Place:  Scoundrels (five in a row and house champions!)

Second Place:  Ray Donavan > Grey’s Anatomy

Third Place:  Santa!  I know him!

Next week’s first category: Greek Mythology!

Fish Market in Alexandria, VA

The Fish Market has a dynamic like no one venue at PHT.  On any given week, we could have 15+ teams, yet of those teams, less than a handful are regulars.  We had 17 teams last night, and I think only three had played before.  That’s not a bad thing at all!  Just an interesting observation.  I’m curious as to what makes this happen.  Either way, it’s always great to know I’ll have a jampacked house ready to kick some butt in the weekly game!  Thanks to everyone for coming out!

Our House Champions, PC Principals, took the night off to mentally prep for the post-season, so tonight was without that trivia juggernaut.  In their absence, it was Title One Forever who picked up the slack, completely dominating this game tonight!  They led after the first half, the second half, the third half (if that’s even a thing!).  They were truly a force to be reckoned with.

Title One owned a 12 point lead going into the final.  The age old question: up 12, do you bet 0 or 1 to secure a win if you’re right, but chance a loss if you miss it?  Title One but the zero, hoping the 2nd place team wouldn’t be able to catch them with a correct response AND a tiebreaker.  Turns out it was the right bet as they miss the final and so did the 2nd place team.  That’s a wrap!  First place goes to Title One Forever!  I’ll be back next week, good luck to those of you playing the playoffs this weekend!  We’ll see you next week!

Next week’s first category:  Donald Trump

Guido’s in Frederick, MD

We had a couple new reams in for our Thursday night game at Guido’s Speakeasy, and let me tell you, they came to play! our top 4 teams kept close with each other to make it exciting at the end, and after the final, this is how we looked… Moving up to 3rd was Team Yoko, moving up to 2nd was T.N.C., and our 1st place winner was Bone Saw McGraw!! For their first victory they decided to go with an audio winners choice question, “2000’s Metal Core” for this Thursday, so study up and I’ll see everyone this week at Guido’s!!
