The Mercury Was Rising for Thursday Night Trivia!

Our Thursday night crew had the benefit of some guest hosts last night, one of which will be a permanent addition to one of our longest-running Thursday night venues.  The overall standings are falling into place for Season XIV, and we have several locations where the house championship should come down to the wire!  We had a final question that provided for a number of interesting finishes, as the first place teams going into the final managed just two correct responses out of eight overall, causing a lot of surprise endings!  Here are the numbers:

THURSDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (51 teams across eight venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s) with 167

–> Highest Score after Round 4: PC Principals (Fish Market) with 167

–> Highest First Half Score: PC Principals (Fish Market) with 91

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): A difficult third round led to exactly ONE TEAM earning the Perfect 21 tonight: Your Mom from Bunker Sports Cafe

–> The halftime page played to an average difficulty level, with a mean score of 16.9, but NO TEAMS scored a perfect 20 (although nearly a dozen teams topped out at 19).  About 35% of our teams recognized the derivation of the word ‘cosmopolitan,’, scoring six points on the 6-4-2.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (37.4% success rate):

–>  On March 18, 2011, the Messenger space probe became the first spacecraft to enter the orbit of which planet?  (you’ll find the answer in this blog)

Quincy’s in Gaithersburg, MD

It’s been a while Quincy’s, but I am back, and it looks like for a while at the very least! I know you guys have been on a a bit of a carousel ride with hosts, but I hope to do great with you all for all our games of Pour House Trivia moving forward!

Highlights of the Night:

In “I-Vote-For-More-Mario-Beeps”: Bleeping things out with Video Game noises is officially my new favorite thing. I couldn’t stop giggling, and even over the music I could hear teams laughing along. I move that all future bleeps be done with video game sounds. All in favor?

In “Ian-Doesn’t-Know-What-Question-He’s-Reading”: Sorry about that little hiccup in round 3 guys. I was running on fumes and had a nice little brain fart there. Hopefully it won’t happen again. Knowing me, it will.

In “Around-the-Solar-System”: With the exception of Mars, all the planets in the system not named Earth were guessed on tonight’s final. When the question was about Messenger.  Like the name of the ‘messenger god’ in Roman mythology…  Who could that be?  Hint hint.

In third place tonight, Turtles All the Way Down!

In second place tonight, Blue Collar!

In first place tonight, Lowered Expectations!

Great game tonight, guys! Next week we’ll kick things off with a category about It’s A Wonderful Life! Getting festive early! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

There was no trivia at Champion Billiards last night.  Sam returns on December 15th!

Bunker Sports Cafe in Leesburg, VA

Well the word is we had some major traffic issues around the DC/NoVa area so we had a “quaint” game of Pour House Trivia here at Bunker Sports Cafe in Leesburg.  Throughout this game we remembered Pearl Harbor, some early 70’s comedy, celebrity jailbirds, singing Monkees, and a legendary maze in which you wouldn’t want to be considered as “bull-headed”! Here are the results:

First Place:  Your Mom

Second Place:  Indians

Third Place:  Thundercats

Next week’s first category for next week: Triple 50/50 Celebrity: Dead or Alive?

Links at Challedon in Mount Airy, MD

Tonight at the Links at Challedon we had a tight game as teams really came to play tonight.  Greens in Regulation jumped out to an early lead with a high score of 18 on the halftime page, but they had two other teams breathing down their neck.  The favorite question of the night was definitely the Heisman question, with teams attempting to name the three current ACC schools OTHER than Miami or Florida State with Heisman Trophy winners.  Only one team was able to pull all three answers (Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Boston College) for what would prove to be a crucial two-point bonus.  As the second half rolled on, Balls Out snuck into the lead, and was able to maintain that spot as we geared up for the final question.  Only one team came up with the correct response, and it was Balls Out who hung on and scored a win – their FOURTH IN A ROW!  Congrats go out as well to our second place team of Greens in Regulation, and in third was the Sharpies.  First round category for next week is The Sopranos.

Until next time,

Smoketown Brewing in Brunswick, MD

Tonight I had the pleasure of covering for Zach at the Smoketown Brewery in Brunswick, and I must say that place is really cool.  I liked the atmosphere and the people there were just the most fun.  We started out with a question about The Oakland Raiders (courtesy of last week’s winners…. Raider Nation).  There was even a Raiders game on TV tonight too!  The halftime page was football themed too, as it asked teams to identify NFL logos that were modified into different Disney characters, as well as the different characters pictured.

The final question of the night asked about inventions and innovations, and most teams did really well on this one, I was impressed!  As a result third place tonight went to The Other Side of the River, second went to Raider Nation, and tonight’s winners were Team Scoundrel!  Next week we start with a question about beer brewing, which is quite fitting with the venue.  Zach will be back with you guys and gals then, so hopefully he’ll see you guys next week!

Until next time,

~ Chad

Morgan Ridge Railwalk in Salisbury, NC

We had four teams last week at Morgan Ridge Railwalk Brewery in Salisbury, and all of our teams had a blast! Birthday Girl and Mothers & Others were neck and neck the entire game, until Birthday Girl came through with the final question for the victory.  It was a nice birthday treat for the couple that was out celebrating.  But, what was shocking and great was when Germasian made a big comeback and finished in 3rd place.  These 4 teams had a blast and we hope to see them this coming Thursday along with others!

First place:  Birthday Girl

Second  Place:  Mothers & Others

Third Place: Germasian

Brooksville Brewing in Spring Hill, FL

It was our second night of Pour House Trivia at Brooksville Brewing in Spring Hill, Florida!  Fun in the sun!  Plenty of beers to go around.  It was a close match between our loyal teams.  Congratulations to Team Awesome for maintaining the first place spot in the end!  Second place went to the Bartenders and third place was won by Sic Semper Tyrannus, who missed the entire first round!  Thanks to all who played! See you next week!

Fish Market in Alexandria, VA

It was another great game of trivia at the Fish Market tonight!  It’s getting VERY cold out, and tonight was the first time that I really regretted not bundling up..  Luckily, we got inside and were able to be comfortable and relax while the game kept us company.  Joining us this week was PC Principals, last week’s winners; they looked like they wanted another win tonight against a field of mostly newcomers.  Looked like an easy victory for the former World Series Runner-Ups.

Going into the 2nd half, PC Principals had only missed 1 point, sitting at a post-90 score, the only team to do so. They continued the wreckage through round 3, picking up many points, and nailing the 6-4-2 on the 6, one of 2 teams to do so (the other team was a new team called Team Census!)… PCP was unstoppable, but for the teams playing, they figured they just needed some luck on the final and to stay within in range to make sure it wasn’t a run away.

Going into the final, PCP didn’t QUITE have the lock. Up 11 points on the 2nd place team, a new crew called Team Sleigh, PCP bet 2 points and would win if they got the final correct. The final tonight was a toughy. And the only chance PCP loses is if they miss and Team Sleigh managed to get the final correct. Well, tonight was a night for miracles I guess. 1 team getting the final correct — Team Sleigh! They got the final, went up 12 points, and leaped over the huge favorite PCP to take down the win! Great game! PCP takes 2nd with 3rd going to Team Census in their first visit to the Market.

Good game all! Getting cold out, make sure you bundle up! We’ll be back next week for another great game of trivia where we’ll be starting with some Reality Television! Can’t wait, until then guys, thanks! 😉

Reality TV Trivia

Guido’s in Frederick, MD

We had a good game at Guido’s Speakeasy on Thursday! It looked like our top 3 were pretty much settled after round 4, then the final question changed that notion completely! Almost everyone went the full 12 wager and only 2 teams answered correctly, so the 2 teams that were tied in 5th were now tied for 2nd!! After the tie breaker, we had Spitters are Quitters in 3rd, Friends of Dick Johnson took 2nd, and after a long hiatus, T.N.C. got the 1st place win!! As the Proprietors of Frederick’s own 10th Ward Distillery, they picked “Whiskey” for next weeks winners choice. So I’ll see everyone next Thursday at Guido’s Speakeasy!!
