Sunday and Monday Nursed that Trivia Pub Crawl Hangover…
Even with the Pour House Season XIV Playoffs taking place over the weekend, that did not deter many of our regular teams from returning to action on Sunday and Monday nights! Why not squeeze in one last game before the big one rolls in just five days! A lot of our regular teams took the chance to try out new team names as we gear up for the start of Season XV on Monday, January 30. Here are your top performers from the last two nights:
SUNDAY AND MONDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (44 teams across seven venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Stink Floyd (Il Forno) The A Team (Il Forno) with 172
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Stink Floyd (Il Forno) The A Team (Il Forno) with 160
–> Highest First Half Score: Walking Talking Stephen Hawking (Spider Kelly’s) with 89
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): H.R. Puff ‘N’ Stuff (DRP), Stink Floyd (Il Forno)
–> The halftime page played fairly easily tonight, as about 35% of the field scored a perfect 20 on the halftime page, with an overall average of 18.2.
–> About 20% of our teams earned six points on the 6-4-2 by knowing that the only state whose name does NOT share any letters with ‘BARACK OBAMA’ was Tennessee.
MONDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (74.3% success rate):
–> Which 1970’s film used the simple tagline: “Catch It”? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
The Beacon in Frederick, MD
I’ll be the first to admit it. There were some tough questions in the Sunday night set that we played at The Beacon in Frederick. This definitely threw off some teams and one of those teams had something happen to them for the first time this season! Finishing in third place tonight was a new team: Bam-A-Rama, second place went to the Witiots (they finished in first place in every game this season until now!), and the ONLY team to top the Witiots in season 14 was a brand new first timer known as Syncadd! They decided that “Geology” will be the first winners choice category of season 15, so study up and GOOD LUCK to all my teams in the World Series this Sunday!!

THERE IS NO TRIVIA AT THE BEACON ON JAN. 29 DUE TO WORLD SERIES XIV. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES REGARDING THE GAME ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY.
DRP in Alexandria, VA
Tonight was our transition week at DRP as we await World Series XIV coming up this weekend, and begin Season XV next Monday on January 30. Because of that, we had a few teams take a well-deserved rest, but some came back for more trivia, and with a bunch of new teams in the house, the show had to go on! First off, congratulations to HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff, who took home the bronze at the Virginia Playoffs this past weekend. And to Del Ray Dummies, who is our DRP delegation to the World Series this weekend in Hagerstown.
We started with some tricky questions on trios of literary characters and the first book they appeared in, which led some of our teams to answer “Angels and Demons” rather than “The Da Vinci Code” and “Red Dragon” rather than the correct “The Silence of the Lambs”. Later on, we had a question on which First Lady did not change her surname upon marriage. The correct answer was Eleanor Roosevelt, but our diligent players pointed out that Hilary Clinton changed her surname years after her marriage. So they both earned points. That right there is the spirit of a true trivia player—keeping the quizmaster on his toes.
Are you from Nashville? ‘Cause you’re the only “Ten I See”. A cheesy pick-up line led some teams to picking up an extra six points in the 6-4-2. But things got serious again as teams racked up points answering questions on UKIP and the history of Democratic Republic of the Congo’s place names. A few creative misspellings in the Fifteen-Letter Words question led to a close contest within the Top 3.
Eventually, most of our teams were “Stayin’ Alive” after figuring out “Saturday Night Fever” was the film with the tagline: “Catch It”. This led to our medal table for tonight:
First Place: HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff
Second Place: B-58s
Third Place: Del Ray Dummies
Next week’s first category: Celebrity Couples
Remember that standings points will reset to zero as we begin Season 15, Monday January 30! Hope to see you there!

This week was our pre-season week for Season XV of Pour House Trivia. Tonight, we started things off with a question about “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, asking about what happened to Veruca Salt in the film version where she was labeled a “bad egg”, which most teams knew. The audio question was amusing as it was about ‘addictive’ songs and included Sublime’s ‘Smoke Two Joints’, as well as Eric Clapton with ‘Cocaine’ and Amy Winehouse with ‘Rehab’. The halftime page for tonight asked about celebrities based on their Star Trek guest appearances, as well as matching companies to the State they are located.
In the second half, we had an interesting MLB question about how the Yankees and Giants played each other in the World Series in the 1920’s where they shared a stadium, and met again in the 1960’s with home stadiums that are roughly 2,500 miles apart, because the Giants moved from N.Y. to San Francisco. The final question was about film tag lines, and most teams did really well with it. This meant there wasn’t much change at the end, with third place going to Rice Rice Baby, second going to Buzzkilz, and the win going to Give Us Your Beer Money! Congrats! Next week we start the new season with a question about the film ‘Conan the Barbarian’ so study up! I’ll see you all then! Good luck at the World Series for those of you going!
Until next time,
~ Chad
Next week’s first category: “Conan the Barbarian”
Morgan Inn in Woodbine, MD
There was no game at Morgan Inn on Monday night. Ronnie returns next week with an opening category of Garage Bands.
Hershey’s Restaurant in Gaithersburg, MD
We had a great ending to a fun game at Hershey’s Restaurant on Monday! The new team that got the win last week in their debut was back to defend their title. By round 3, it looked like they were about to run away with it and win two in a row. Unfortunately they hit a rough patch in round 4, and held a two-point lead going into the final question! Thankfully, they nailed the final and held on to their second win in a row! Finishing in third place, we had Forget The Shrimp, Cheezus Crust pulled into second, and once again The Flat Stanleys got the victory!! They picked “1970’s Sitcoms” for the first winners choice category of Season XV, and good luck to my teams in the World Series this Sunday!! See ya’ll next Monday at Hershey’s!

We may be in between seasons here at Unos, but tonight’s game of Pour House Trivia was every bit as exciting as usual!
Highlights of the Night:
In “Ian-Needs-More-Coffee”: I don’t know what was wrong with me tonight, but clearly I did not have enough caffeine in my system, as I tripped over the simplest words while still managing to blurt out the big complicated ones. Thank you for putting up with me tonight guys; if I get my mistakes out now, I’ll be fine come season 15!
In “That-Awkward-Moment-When”: That awkward moment when you have to tell people that they don’t know songs about drugs well enough xD The Addictive Audio question turned out to be a tricky one, and reading out the answers to the songs didn’t make things any easier on a few teams!
In “Classic-Rock-101”: That said, not knowing some of those songs is forgivable. But clearly we need a remedial Classic Rock class in here next week, because even the one team that DID get Van Halen (gasp) didn’t know both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar (gasp). Clearly this must be remedied immediately!
After four tough rounds, the final scared a few teams into wagering defensively; for one team it paid off, for another it cost them.
In third place tonight, Tequila Mockingbird!
In second place tonight, Chappequa Park Rangers!
In first place tonight, the Jom Stars!
Great game everyone! Good luck to my teams in the World Series this weekend, I’ll be rooting for you! Next week when we begin Season 15 play, we will kick things off with a Video Games question! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!
Until then,
~ Ian
Spider Kelly’s in Arlington, VA
A Fab group of teams showed up to Spider Kelly’s tonight as get ready for Season XV. As has been the case the last couple of weeks, only the bonuses tripped up our teams in the first round. We had just one team correctly translate the infamous El Chapo as “shorty” in English. Round 2’s biggest fumble was naming the only 20th century First Lady to never change her name after getting married. Since they were 5th cousins once removed, Eleanor Roosevelt did not need to change her surname. The halftime puzzle seemed pretty easy for these Trekkies – we had one perfect score, and the lowest score was 18.
Round 3 had the toughest question with NO teams correctly guessing the seafood name found in the official name of a Chinese take out box (it’s called an oyster pail). In question three of that round, many teams took a risk and guessed on the U.K. Independence leader’s name and got it wrong before multiple choices were given. And even though there are many movie buffs in the crowd, only one team could correctly label the AMPAS acronym, the association that gives out the Oscars. Walking Talking Stephen Hawking took an early lead and held onto it for the duration of the game. Winners were as follows:
First Place: Walking Talking Stephen Hawking
Second Place: Army of One
Third Place: PC Principals
Next week’s first category: Grunge Bands
Next week will be the last Monday trivia night at Spider Kelly’s, so join Kate and let’s go out with a bang! She will be heading to Fireflies in Del Ray Tuesday nights starting Feb 7. Follow the Pour House blog for updates on new venues.
Il Forno Pizzeria in Frederick, MD
We took a week off of the regular season between the Playoff games and the upcoming World Series but we still had a good number of teams coming out to join us! Maybe some last minute practice? Maybe they didn’t realize trivia was happening and just happened to be here? Maybe they just wanted a good night out with some friends? Either way, I’m glad you all could join us.
Last season was a weekly head-to-head match-up of juggernauts between Stink Floyd and the A Team, and tonight they bashed heads once again. Among a good chunk of teams, it was those two that looked ready to take the win, as they traded off the lead all night, miles above the rest of the crowd. On fire, they hoped that the game of tug-of-war would end at some point and we’d see a clear victor.
Well, halftime came and Stink Floyd led. The 3rd round and the 6-4-2 passed and the game was tied. Round 4 passed and still with the tie. The final question? Both got it. Still tied! At 172, points both Stink Floyd and The A Team were locked in after the regulation game, up 18 points on the next closest team. Volcano Insurance managed 3rd place, even though they didn’t get close to our leaders.
Stink Floyd and The A Team were in a final tiebreaker, closest to the number of World Series visits for the Giants, dating back to their days in New York. The A Team guessed 11, while Stink Floyd guessed 17. Well, it was more than both of those guesses… 20 times they went to the World Series, so Stink Floyd wins the game! What a finish, so close throughout! Good luck this Sunday to our post-season teams! We start Season 15 next week!
