Speak Softly and Carry a Big Brain…
Another night of Wednesday Pour House Trivia is in the books! At our 13 venues, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with some (not so notable) literary quotes, which served as a reminder to just about everyone that it’s been a LOOOONG time since we’ve actually read those books. We donned some Scottish headwear and got Presidential on our final question. But who were the best teams tonight? Check out the details:
WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (91 teams across 13 venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Comfortably Dum (Belles’ Sports Bar) with 165
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Comfortably Dum with 154
–> Highest First Half Score: Momentary Lapse of Reason (Bennigan’s – Frederick) and Graham Top T.J. Bottom (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg) with 84
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): With the third round playing at about 55% correct overall, no team scored the ‘Perfect 21’ tonight.
–> The halftime page featured Grammy nominated artists and sports star career time spans, and BOTH of those must have been wheelhouse categories for our teams, as 20% of the field scored a perfect 20, with the average score in at 18.4.
–> The 6-4-2 question was tougher, as just 5% of our teams knew that the 1969 film “A Boy Named Charlie Brown” closes with Charlie Brown ironically misspelling the word ‘beagle’.
TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (24.2% success rate):
–> Who was the first American-born winner of the Nobel Peace Prize? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
Valley Grill in Middletown, MD
I can’t believe that it is March already! We kicked off the new month with a great game here at Valley Grill in Middletown, and a close game for a few of our teams at the end. I’m going to keep tonight’s blog brief, so here we go…
It seems the categories that our teams had the most success with tonight were the Galaxy Note 7 faux pas, Owen Wilson films, how to pronounce “dog” in foreign languages, including this popular puppy:
On the downside, the question which gave our teams the most trouble concerned German conferences, Scottish fashion, and North Carolina cities. But a few of our teams were able to hit the final question of the night with the correct response of Theodore Roosevelt. Thanks again for coming out! Here are your results:
First Place: Stupider, Sexier Flanders
Second Place: Voltron
Third Place: Shakeweight
Next week’s first category: “Psycho”

The Tavern in Olney, MD
At Wednesday night’s game at The Tavern in Olney, we had at least three teams that at one point were in first place after one of our rounds. There’s always a chance for it to be anyone’s game and that always makes it fun to see what happens, or watch who doesn’t lose it in round three or four!
After the final question, It’s Not a Toomah! finished third, Olney The Lonely was second and continuing a current first place win streak was It’s Not a Toomah! Fan Club!! They picked “European Borders” for next weeks winners choice, so study up and join us this Wednesday for some FUN at The Tavern!

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD
So when the words don’t want to word, and I’m just at a loss – there’s no place I would rather be than at Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick! Thank you for your help with the science question, and your patience on the hat talking debacle… the phrase “Scottish Highland” should not be that difficult… At least the question wasn’t easy, it distracted you all quickly 😉 I do love my Wednesday nights. We had the perfect mix of teams tonight, and a good time was had by all. The threeway may have had something to do with that…
Thankfully, there was no tiebreaker needed after our final question! A few teams were inspired to touchdown celebrations, but the leader board didn’t get much of a shake up! In third place, it was #Fatkiddanceparty, always good to see you guys. Second place went to Kobe Buffalomeat (Ha! Try calling your first category for next week before the first question again! :p), and our winners tonight were those rowdy boys of Comfortably Dum! I love it.
See you next week!

Next week’s first category: “Emergency!”
Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD
Tonight… tonight was rough. Our game of Pour House Trivia here at Bennigan’s in Frederick was a battle from start to finish. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna walk out to my car to find tires slashed and doors keyed. xD
Highlights of the Night:
In “Clearly-We-Need-Some-Language-Lessons”: I didn’t think for a second that the foreign words for dog question was gonna be one of the more difficult of the night, but apparently y’all need refreshers on your Spanish/French 101 courses! I thought at least Inu would be a dead giveaway. Like Shiba Inu?
In “Mom-Calm-Down!”: the Balmoral question. HOOOOOOOOOOOO boy the Balmoral question. My immigrated-from-Scotland mother was NOT thrilled with that one. Neither were some other teams, but I’m not related to a lot of other teams! The time it took to calm the seas was treacherous, but we got it done. Still, good lord woman!
In “It’s-All-Greek-to-You”: This one though, this one took the cake. This was just silly! Greek for ‘color’ people! Chroma! That should’ve been a toss-up, not a total whiff! What was up with y’all tonight? The final was largely irrelevant due to defensive wagers, so when the dust cleared, and the final sword fell, it went down like this.
In third place tonight, Guante de Popo!
In second place tonight, Momentary Lapse of Reason!
In first place tonight, Better Late Than Pregnant!
I won’t say great game, lest someone’s in head slapping distance, but still well-fought victories tonight. Next week we’ll kick things off with a Proctology question! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!
Until then,
~ Ian
Woodside Deli in Germantown, MD
Six teams made it out to Woodside Deli for some intense competition for Wednesday night Pour House Trivia. High Water Mark returned to top form, nailing the final question and eeking up new team Cash Me Outside. The Fellowship rounded out the top three with a strong finish.

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD
Dusty Baker has won a few games in a row now. They’ve won the PHT World Series, they’ve gotten their name out there. The only thing now is to win a House Championship, a feat they’ve yet to accomplish due to scheduling conflicts. Well, they managed to have an open Spring and this season looks like their time.
Going into the half tonight, it wasn’t Dusty Baker who was winning, it was Graham Top TJ Bottom. A rare sight as this Graham team just never really finds themselves in the mix, but tonight they were on fire! They were the lone team to pick up two 2 point bonuses in the first half and with no misses on their wagers, they held a very strong 6 point lead going into the second half.
The problem with Graham Top TJ Bottom is when they start drinking, it becomes a bit tough, noticeable by their 2nd half performance. They went from 1st place to something worse very quickly, missing a good chunk of the questions in the 3rd round. Dusty Baker took this to their advantage and were able to lead going into the final.
A hard final tonight, the correct answers would prove very advantageous for the teams who found it. 3rd place, a jump up for the Gold Team, nailing the final and finishing in the money after struggling for a good bit of the game. 2nd place to Roaming Gnomes, another get and a good finish. And your winners tonight, once again, Dusty Baker. A strong strong team. Looking forward to next week to see if these juggernauts can be dethroned! Until then…
Next week’s first category: Vladimir Nabokov
Memories in Mount Airy, MD
This week saw some huge cheers, close scores, and a last second upset that made all the difference! Add in a few new teams, some general chaos over the Balmoral question (Pro Tip: Listen to the WHOLE question before turning in your answer), and we had a great start to the month! In the end, some familiar names squared off, but who came away with the coveted category choice?
First Place: Sexual Chocolate
Second Place: LOWL
Third Place: Satan’s School for Girls
Sexual Chocolate comes up with the win (courtesy of a lucky Rowdy Roddy Piper t-shirt), and selects, “The Greasy Strangler” as next week’s first category. Good luck, teams!

Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, MD
Tonight at the Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, it was a bit of a runaway for our top team, but we had a close game for third and second. Insie Tinsie Newforts came back from behind to make it a one point game for third, as they were lifted by nailing the six-point question correct as part of the 6-4-2. At the end of the round, it was still a one-point game between them and Member berries for third place, but due to strategic wagering Insie Tinsie Newforts where able to complete the comeback and take home third place. Second place went to Wolfpack and taking home the easy win was Breakfast For Dinner.
Until next time,
~ Devan
Next week’s first category: New York Yankees
Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD
We had an amazing turnout at Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown this week! A total of ten teams came and went, with some new comers giving the regulars a run for their Trivia Bucks. New team Daking Our Time started strong, and even held on to third place by the end of the first round! I hope you make the trip back from New York one of these days to show those kids how it’s done.
When it came to Nobel Peace Prize winners, we separated the boys from the men, as the first American-born recipient might say. Blank Space stayed strong and came in third. Second place went to the Sad Fat Dragons. But first place was taken by Alternative Answers! Great game!

Applebee’s in Waynesboro, PA
We made it to March everyone! The days are getting longer and warmer, and we are getting closer to playing trivia outside on the patio at Applebee’s. Speaking of getting warmer, JuJu and Friends is on fire with their third victory in a row after yet another great game. We had multiple lead changes in this one and at halftime had several teams within five points of each other, including a tie for first place. After a strong third round, and being the only team to get the 6-4-2 on the six point clue, JuJu and Friends took sole possession of first place and never looked back. Here are your top three teams tonight:
First Place: JuJu and Friends
Second Place: Bees?
Third Place: Not Your Team
Next week’s first category: Incredible Hulk Villains
Bust out those comic books and we’ll see you then!
Clover Theater in Cloverdale, CA
WOW! A record sixteen teams and over 70 people gathered for Pour House Trivia here at Clover Theater on Wednesday night. It was a very competitive night with teams jumping all over the standings. The team that was in the lead after the third round ended up in seventh place by the end of the evening. It all came down to the Final Category… The Brainy Yaks were the only team to come up with the correct answer and as a result sewed up their second straight victory. What a game! I can’t wait to do it all again next week! Here are your top three teams tonight:
First Place: Brainy Yaks
Second Place: Amigos
Third Place: Sparklers
Next week’s first category: Movie Cowboys
