Rise From the Ashes For Tuesday Night Trivia!
We had some fantastic turnouts on Tuesday night, as we prepare for the ultimate battle… the Season XIV World Series! Some of our Tuesday night teams are no strangers to the top of the standings at our semi-annual event. We certainly hope that they’ll be back for a shot at glory! In the meantime, check out the top scores from last night:
TUESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (81 teams across 12 venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Capitol City Goofballs (Capitol City Brewing) and Sofa King Smart (Quincy’s South) with 171
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Capitol City Goofballs with 165
–> Highest First Half Score: Capitol City Goofballs with 91
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Capitol City Goofballs, Sofa King Smart, It’s Gonna Be (Quincy’s South), Milwaukee Beers (FireFlies)
–> The halftime page played slightly on the tougher side tonight, scoring an average of 15.8. Oddly enough, the only teams to score 20 points were all at the SAME BAR: as four teams recorded perfect scores at Capitol City Brewing.
–> Likewise, only two teams (Hillary Did Harambe and Jungle Fever) scored six points on the 6-4-2 question by knowing that the ‘Struldbrugs’ from “Gulliver’s Travels” were immortal (though perpetually living in old age).
TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (46.9% success rate):
–> Because proper nouns are not allowed, what is the most populous U.S. city whose full name is a legal play in the board game Scrabble? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)
It sure felt great to be back behind the host’s table for the last night of Season XIV at Cap City! Many thanks to Chris for filling in for me last week while I recovered from a nasty stomach bug. Last night was another packed house as twelve teams came out to compete! If there’s one thing that the Cap City squads enjoy, it’s some current-events humor, and I had more than one team appeal to “alternative facts” to try and justify a wrong answer. Sorry, folks – I love Kellyanne too, but not just anyone can get away with that kind of chutzpah.
As you can read in today’s “Stats & Facts”, our players really know their album covers and world leaders, although Robert Mugabe and Daniel Ortega threw plenty of teams for a loop. After halftime, the Capitol City Goofballs held a modest lead, followed by the Hillbillies, Three Million People, and a legendary team that returned to Cap City after a long hiatus: ALL CAPS! Round 3 was a real meat grinder, featuring one of Shakespeare’s more obscure comedies. Then, more than a few teams showed their courage in going for six points in the 6-4-2, but all came up empty except Hillary Did Harambe, who were one of only two teams nationwide to get it right after the first clue! Throughout the second half, the Goofballs expanded their lead over the rest of the field, but were not untouchable at the Final Question.
That Final was a fun one, and plenty teams put in solid guesses for US cities whose names could be valid Scrabble words, like Buffalo, Mobile, and Providence. But our top three teams (and few others) knew that Phoenix was the most populous city that could be a Scrabble play. Your top three:
First Place: Capitol City Goofballs
Second Place: ALL CAPS
Third Place: Quiz All Over Your Face
Next week’s first category: Stanley Kubrick Films

Talk about a flip flop of a game! That 3rd round was a killer! Teams were up, they were down and while they were hoping to go back up again – for many it just wasn’t going to happen tonight. Ouch… Who the hell is Mookie anyway!? Sookie’s better dressed cousin? Ha! I crack myself up…
I know, I know… enough with the jokes – get on with it! Well, quite a few of you were kicking yourself after that final tonight – either for your nosedive at the end of the game (Sorry Racks) or for your overly careful wager (Yeah, looking at you Keith) but we at least had three happy teams! Other Sarah made it in to the top three! Second place went to Jungle Fever and first place was And We’re All Out of Bubblegum! What a great warm up going into our World Series on Sunday! It’s going to be a helluva time! Next week we start out with a question about Dandies, get yourself all spiffed up!
Happy Tuesday to you all and thanks again for coming out to Cugini’s for a little pre-season trivia action! Veteran actor and comedian Cheech Marin was the answer for our first category tonight, Pixar’s “Cars”. We followed that question up with some “B.S.” along with a little network TV. We went back in time while going to the movies for our audio clue, and then we moved on to some old school arcade games and the Pittsburgh Penguins in round two. After our colorful halftime page, we covered varying subjects in the 2nd half of our game including religion, Shakespeare, lunar geography, and some ad slogans. Best of luck to the teams playing in the World Series this Sunday! Here are tonight’s results:
First Place: No Clue
Second Place: Five Must Get Beers
Third Place: Misfits
Next week’s first category: “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy

Tonight we had our Preseason game for Season XV, which starts next week. The preseason is definitely the time where bold strategies happen, as well as fun new team names showing up. We started out with a question about STD’s, where we learned that they used to all be referred to as venereal diseases. The audio question of the day was cool; we asked teams to identify three different movies that came out 20, 40, and 60 years ago respectively. Most teams recognized “Star Wars”, but fewer got “Titanic” and even less got “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.
Halftime asked teams to identify different musical acts based on album covers, as well as answering whether certain politicians were still in power or not. We also had a tough nicknames question, where we discussed a bunch of people who shared the nickname Mookie. We learned that Pearl Jam used to be called Mookie Blaylock, after the NBA All-Star, but had to change their name because he didn’t like it. I also loved the mention of the country of Chad in the World History question, discussing how Chad became independent (with some other countries) from France in 1960.
The final question of the night was about Scrabble and US Cities, and led to some defensive wagering. Only a few teams got it right, and the defensive strategies actually paid off some. Third place went to We’ve Embraced Our Mediocrity, second went to Suck It Trebek, and the win went to His and Her Peas! Congrats! Next week we start the game (and the season) off with a question about Futurama, so study up! Good luck to those of you coming to World Series, I’ll see you there!
Until next time,
~ Chad
World Series XIV is here!! Well, not here… it’s Sunday… but SOON! And that means it’s Preseason week, where anything goes, including just talking about Lisa Loeb for no real reason. Teams ran through this week’s set, ready for more, and boy howdy will they get it this weekend. Season XIV House Champions Poovey Farms got out in front and stayed there all game, leading to an anticlimactic final and another win for Poovey.
First Place: Poovey Farms
Second Place: The Trivia Knight
Third Place: Hookers + Blackjack
The gang from Poovey Farms has selected “Brands of Flutes” as next week’s first category – the first Winner’s Choice category of Season XV at Tilted Kilt!
See you either next week or at World Series!

Senor Tequila’s in Germantown, MD
Tonight may have just been for fun in the grand scheme of things, but that didn’t mean the teams took tonight’s game of Pour House Trivia any less seriously tonight at Senor Tequilas!
Highlights of the Night:
In “None-Hit-Wonders”: We started off the night with a 1-Hit Wonders of the 1980s question. It didn’t take too long to show that we are clearly not boned up on our 80s One-Trick ponies. Tracey Ullman apparently had a hit song?? That didn’t even sound like her!
In “Most-Clarified-and-Repeated-Question-of-the-Night”: The Nicknames question was just convoluted and complicated enough for my head-scratching teams, to require several retellings, explanations, and elaborations to as to drag the question out a fair amount, and even then teams weren’t able to find Mookie, let alone the bonus. Tough would be putting this one lightly!
In “Oh-Hell-No-I-Ain’t-Saying-That”: I do love the “I don’t know, here’s a joke” answers I get during tougher questions. I enjoy reading them out, because they always draw a good laugh. But the Shakespeare question tonight saw a joke answer reference a certain Scottish play several times in order to fulfill the requirements of the question. I am not about to jinx myself by saying the name of the play ONCE, let alone three times. Y’all trying to get something bad to happen to me! For shame!
The final tonight was a tricky one, but everyone got there in the end; the defensive wagering however, ended up costing a team.
In third place tonight, Beer Pressure!
In second place tonight, Uncle Jack!
In first place tonight, the Fan Club!
Great game everyone, and good luck at the World Series to my Haegerstown teams! Next week we’ll kick off Season 15 with a British Phrases and Slang question! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!
Until then,
~ Ian
The evening began auspiciously with an audio triple 50/50 on Creed and Nickleback songs, and we survived, defying the odds. More than one person – including myself – incorrectly predicted that we’d pass through Armageddon before we finished that question. Alas, we’re all still alive. Apropos of nothing but important to note: two more new teams introduced to Pour House Trivia tonight at one of our favorite venues, Fireflies. How I, personally, love to bring new teams to the fold.
Sadly, very few teams knew the movie Bridge On the River Kwai — which, frankly, is an offense to cinema. Such a good film. (I made sure to encourage the youngins to watch it as soon as possible. Maybe next week I’ll suggest Sand Pebbles (Go Navy!))
I was also put in my place in terms of age of actually having known that Asteroid was produced by Atari (and played on the Atari 2600!) Mookie proved to be a problem. On a whole lot of accounts. A difficult question for both the host and the audience. But, about half of our teams were able to roll over that speed bump with ease. And your finishers on this interim game before Season 15 begins next week:
First Place: Milwaukee Beers (blame them for Creed and Nickleback)
Second Place: Eric Who?
Third Place: Fun Squad
Next week’s first category: “Blazing Saddles”
Fair Winds or Following Seas,

Coming soon…
Monkey La La in Frederick, MD
I had the privilege of subbing as host for Monkey La-La’s on Tuesday, and it was a lot of fun! It was good to see some old familiar faces in the crowd and the game was fun to watch because the teams were all keeping pace with each other! At the final, everyone went all 12 points except for one team who rolled the dice with a zero wager. That ended up being a really smart move for them, because only one team answered the final correctly so they moved up! Finishing in 3rd was now Sad and Demented But Social, moving up to 2nd with a zero wager was Stink Floyd, and winning 1st was the only team that got the final, Sloppy Seconds!! They decided that “Denver Broncos” will be the first winners choice category to start off Season 15 at Monkey La-La and good luck to all in the World Series on Sunday!!

We have a week off of collecting points between seasons 14 and 15. That week was tonight, and despite that, we still had a big number of our regulars show up! Uncle Jack notably was missing but otherwise we had mostly a full roster! Last second prep for the big game on Sunday is perhaps in order, and also some teams have reason to be here. Wingardium Triviosa looking to extend a 4-game win streak while all the other teams are looking to cool them off.
Sofa King Smart was killing it all night, perhaps a picture of things to come. They were generating some serious momentum for Sunday’s game. Wingardium Triviosa was perfect until the halftime page gave them some trouble, they scored a 15/20, dropping back into 2nd behind Sofa King.
Sofa King had a strong 3rd round but dropped a big fat 0 on the 6-4-2 due to an early guess that didn’t favor them. WT also went early, missing it, Screaming Death Monkey were able to close the gap a bit by getting 4 points there. Going into the final, it was Sofa King Smart sitting at the top.
Wingardium Triviosa got the final correct almost immediately, looking to hopefully end up in the top spot for another week. Some of the top teams were dropping back too as Screaming Death Monkey came up with an incorrect response. Sofa King Smart however did get the final correct and they cap off a nice night of trivia with a victory! 2nd place went to Wingardium Triviosa who won a tiebreaker over It’s Gonna Be, who also got the final right. That’s a wrap, good luck on Sunday all!
