Pour House Pub Trivia’s Tuesday was anything but Rude!

Pour House pub trivia‘s Tuesday was the opposite of “Rude,” I think, but what about you guys?

We bootlegged (no, not the illegal hooch, just the QB run), threw some darts and listened to some 90s rock with the Gin Blossoms (I’LL FOLLOW YOU DOOOOOOWNNNNN!), so all in all, it was a pretty great Tuesday!

See how the games shook out below.

Capitol City Brewing Company – Arlington, VA

One last warm-up before the Summer Finals this Saturday, and it was a stellar game as the B-58s came from behind for the win!  They are in fine form as we gear up for the fall season.  Second place went to Gus Polinski and the Kenosha Kickers, followed by Show Me on the Doll.  Next week begins with a question on the U.S. Air Force.  I hope to see everybody on Saturday!  ~ Matt

Champion Billiards – Frederick, MD

Champions, I’m not gonna lie -I really, really want to be able to say that there’s an Oscar-winning song titled “Pimpin’ ain’t easy.” So bad.

Lots of fun tonight, saw some faces I hadn’t seen in awhile. Can’t wait to see what the new season brings! Also excited for my teams headed to the Summer Championships- good luck!

Thanks for the good times tonight- I needed the laughs, maybe next week I can manage a not so generic no cheating spheel. In 3rd tonight it was Born to Guava, even with the 30 points deducted for the Let It Go singing. 2nd went to BTI- they just couldn’t handle another Hall and Oates audio clue gentlemen- no matter how awesome the song 😉 Wiser but still dead prevailed tonight and for next weeks category they are going for a Triple 50/50: Scrabble word values. I know what you all will be doing this week and playing scrabble too!

Celebrity Bar and Grill, Hollywood Casino – Perryville, MD

The house champion of Celebrity Bar & Grill was in good form for the last points game of the Summer Fling! We had a new team, Jackal, take 3rd, I’m Just Making This Up As I Go Along finished 2nd, and with yet another 1st place finish under their belt, American Outlaws!! They picked “Ringo Starr Songs” for next Tuesdays winners choice, and good luck to them in the finals on the 19th! I’ll see you next week at Celebrity Bar & Grill!  ~  Jon J

Monkey La La – Frederick, MD

And that, my friends, is the end of a darn good summer of La La style pub trivia! And tonight was a feisty one for sure! I would like to thank all of you for playing PHT this summer and I wish you the best of luck in the Summer Fling finals on Sept. 19th.

Congrats to Atlas Drugged for going wire to wire this evening and earning the final W – and not an easy set either! There were a couple of Easter eggs planted in there certainly, but Dr. Faciler, Milky Chance, and Kim Clijsters certainly balanced those out with some bite!

Atlas Drugged managed to duck out before I got a first category for next week. Either that or I brain farted in the Summer Fling finale craziness! Atlas, contact me this week with a first category for next week’s SEASON 12 OPENER!

Props to the Top 3 tonight, who finished Summer Fling 2015 with a bang!

Orioles Nest #331 – Frederick, MD

Tonight marked the end of our summer season at the Orioles Nest and the place was packed. Lots of familiar faces and a few new ones made tonight another great night for trivia and a great way to close out the summer (I know summer doesn’t actually end until the 22nd, but still!). Tonight we started out with a question about the classic TV show Sanford and Son, more specifically the neighborhood the junkyard they own is located in. After that was an author question that featured two clues which were quite difficult, and then a final clue that was almost a dead giveaway, which caused plenty of humorous reactions from the teams. We also had a fun question about minor Disney characters. The Shadow Man from Princess and the Frog is a seriously underrated Disney villain, evidenced by the fact that he’s the main antagonist of the film but is supposedly a ‘minor’ character? The end of the round resulted in one of the funnier oversights in Pour House Trivia history, with the A+B=C asking what the number at the top of a dart board is – which might have been a bit of a challenge if it wasn’t for the half-dozen dart boards right behind me when I was asking the question!

Either way the audio question of the night was a fun one, asking about bands with types of beverages in their names. Most teams recognized CCR, but fewer could pull Gin Blossoms and Milky Chance (I still think that Milky Chance is one of the worst names ever). The football question was a good one too, asking about the play known as a bootleg, which is when the QB pretends to hand it off but runs the other way himself. The cheese question that was next actually got some cheers from the crowd, which is definitely one of the more perplexing happenings of the night, but talked about feta cheese (NOT Kraft Singles, as much as one team wished it was). Finishing out the round was a speed spelling question, asking teams to spell the words cite and pique, which is much easier to spell when you can SEE the words, even though I’m actually a great speller in general.

Today’s halftime had people who have animal names, either their first or last names, as one half, and matching main protagonists to the novels they are from. Overall teams did really well on the animal name part, with Deadmau5 (pronounced dead mouse) being the toughest, and Cat Stevens being close behind in difficulty. I did accept both Snoop Dogg and Snoop Lion, as well as accepting Cat Stevens and Yusuf Isllama because come on, that’s just quality comedy right there! I liked the other half too because a bunch of those are rather famous novels, and I’ve read probably half of them.

The third round started with European Monarchs, which got almost as much hype as the cheese question from earlier somehow. Most of the teams did know at least one British Royal name that was used eight times, since if teams didn’t know Henry VIII, I might have gotten pretty upset. Edward was a bit tougher, but some teams still got that right. The Pussycat Dolls question proved pretty easy too, but the bonus part about them singing Jai Ho! from Slumdog Millionaire was something that nobody in the room knew, sadly. The question about Tracy Morgan is a good one too, and I’m happy he’s finally getting back to comedy after almost dying. Good for him! The McDonalds question ended up a bit tough for teams because they couldn’t quite remember the adjectives they used on the Big n’ Tasty sandwich.

I thought the 6-4-2 today was clever, ending up being about the word magic. First they asked about the group who did the song Rude, then the NBA franchise, and then finally about David Blaine’s area of expertise. The tennis question was a bit awkward because Serena was on the TV playing at the time, but nobody got Kim Clijsters, thinking Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova(??) won a bunch of U.S. Opens lately. The supermax question mostly led to me having to explain what a ‘blended word’ is, which is the same thing as whenever people ask me what a Portmanteau is (the best example is Smog). Finishing the round was a question about the medal of honor, which has the word Valor inscribed on the ones for the Army and Air Force, but NOT the Navy for whatever reason.

Tonight’s final question about the 50 states was a neat fact, but everybody did really well naming three of the states that have less than 15 people per square mile. Because of that the final standings didn’t really change much, and taking third place tonight was the Book Club Babes. Second went to One Crow Short of a Murder, who couldn’t *quite* close the gap on the leaders. Winning tonight’s game after holding the lead throughout the game, congrats to Black Steel on closing out the game with a narrow victory! Next week we start with a ridiculous category that Black Steel has been holding onto for months, Daedric Princes of Tamriel (basically the main bad guys in the Elder Scrolls games) so that should be fun, right? I’ll see you all again next week when we start Season 12!

Until next time,
-Chad

Tilted Kilt – Frederick, MD

What a finish to the Summer Fling season!! Veteran teams battled for supremacy, despite already being a lock for the championships. They clashed for honor, for bragging rights, or maybe just because they can!

We learned all about naked bootlegs, Woody Allen films and the musical talents of Milky Chance. An initial lead quickly vanished as the race began to tighten, with teams taking risks to earn those vital 2-point bonuses.

As we drew towards the final, it was still anybody’s game. With a deceptively simple final question, the scoreboard was flipped on it’s head, and we had our victors. In third was Loose Cannons, followed by Duchess in second. Taking it down this week were the NoTalent Rummies, who have chosen the video game Fallout 3 as next week’s first category.

Quincy’s South – Rockville, MD

Summer tournament invites were handed out tonight A’PLENTY as a large number of the qualifying teams were here tonight at Quincy’s! Although this is the week of Labor Day and getting Back to School, we had a surprisingly large field tonight, hitting the double digit mark for team count! Glad to see people still make Tuesday night Trivia a weekly priority! We even had teams that came with just 1, 2, or 3 of their normal crews just to play because, hey, why not? I love the dedication, the drive, and the desire to get your weekly trivia fix in! That being said, let’s summarize our game!

Tonight’s question of the night I’m giving honors to our 6-4-2 question! I had no teams get it on the 6; only 2 or 3 teams got it on the 4 point clue, with a majority of the teams guessing any way. It played much tougher than I’d imagined it would! That song “Rude” by the band Magic! (yes, the exclamation point and all) was pretty big about a year ago and, yes, that group is the most recent GROUP to top the Billboard charts. Crazy right? One Direction hasn’t had a #1 song since – well, they’ve never had a number one song. The most recent group to hit the #1 spot before Magic! was Fun. All about that unnecessary punctuation within the group title, I tell ya! Sheesh.

So, anyway, going into the final we had Uncle Jack leading the way, Team Connor in 2nd, and a tie for 3rd between the Hobgoblins and The Big Fact Hunt in My Pants. The final played extremely difficult, and our teams that managed to snipe it were rewarded with prizes tonight! The 3 teams to get the answer correct: Catching Planes, who take down 3rd place tonight, jumping up about 5 ranking spots! Way to go! D+M also got it right, moving up from 5th to 2nd to end the game, and winning tonight was UNCLE JACK with a correct response to LOCK the game away. Great game guys, I’ll see you back here in a week!

1st Place: Uncle Jack
2nd Place: D+M
3rd Place: Catching Planes
