Thursday’s game of Pour House Trivia welcomed 123 teams across 15 venues.

FIRST ROUND:

Opening round topics from Thursday’s game included words or phrases containing ‘SHOP’, the sportswear companies of Adidas and Puma, and the Dr. Seuss book The Lorax, the latter of which included the most difficult bonus question of the round, as only 19% of our teams knew that the primary antagonist of his book is called the Once-ler.  As a result, only four teams posted a perfect first round score: Cat In the Chat (Loudoun Kitchen), Washington Foreskins (Loudoun Kitchen), Trivia Newton John (Champion), and Hillbilly Geniuses (Belly Love Brewing).

SECOND ROUND:

Thursday’s audio question featured three songs that include whistling.  We listened to Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard by Paul Simon, Patience by Guns ‘N’ Roses, and Good Life by OneRepublic.  Only 13% of our teams earned bonus points by identifying all three musical acts.  We also discussed the new Netflix series Squid Game, alphabetized MLB team names, the medical malady mumps, and Lyndon Johnson.  Jones Springs Hooligans (Bad Habits) and Xanatos Gambit (Mark’s) each notched a perfect second round score of 36 points.

HALFTIME:

Films with helmeted actors and comic book villains were the featured topics on Thursday’s halftime page.  Six teams recorded a perfect score, while the overall average reached 15.7 points.  Here is Thursday’s halftime leaderboard:

THIRD ROUND:

Thursday’s third round looked at the similarly named European capitals of Budapest and Bucharest, the card game pinochle, Super Bowl champions, the comic book character Dick Tracy, and the children’s song The Farmer in the Dell.  Those final two topics included bonus questions that yielded success rates of under 20%, meaning that only two teams ran the table in Thursday’s third round: Xanatos Gambit (Mark’s) and Transparent Eyeballs (Crooked Run).

FOURTH ROUND:

After discussing the film Shrek 2 in the 6-4-2 question, we discussed final round topics such as people named Linus, the European dish schnitzel, and the recent memoir published by Cassandra Peterson, best known by her alter ego of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.  We saved the most difficult bonus question of the game for the close of the fourth round:

  • Cosmos: A Personal Voyage was a 1980 thirteen-part series that was presented by which late astronomer?
  • 2-POINT BONUS: What was the two-word subtitle to the sequel Cosmos documentary series hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson in 2020?

Most of the field earned wagering points with the correct response of Carl Sagan, but only three teams tacked on two bonus points by also knowing the subtitle Possible Worlds.  Not surprisingly, none of our Thursday teams posted a perfect final round score.  These were your highest scoring Thursday teams heading into the final question:

FINAL QUESTION (35.1% success rate):

  • Which 1998 comedy film used the tagline: “Her life was in their hands.  Now her toe is in the mail”?

About one-third of the field earned wagering points on this final question by identifying the tagline of The Big Lebowski.  In its first in-person appearance in more than 19 months, Xanatos Gambit (Mark’s) earned the only Perfect 21 on Thursday night by correctly answering all 21 wagering questions.  Here is Thursday’s final overall leaderboard:
