Orange soda and so much more on Wednesday with Pour House Pub Trivia!

Pour House pub trivia‘s Wednesday served up a tall glass of orange soda to go with some television series questions!

Read on to see how it all went down!

Applebees – Frederick, MD

Tonight’s game started out normally enough, but before I start I want to give a quick shout out to one of my teams that I hadn’t seen in awhile. Two members from The Nation of Quizlam told me they are officially pregnant, and I couldn’t be happier for them! Congrats you two! That’s so exciting!

The game started out with a question about Gilbert and Sullivan operas, but had a little bit of a Law and Order spin to it. Teams ended up guessing that the name of the opera was Special Victims Unit, but it was actually named for a more shortlived series, Trial By Jury. Otherwise the first round went by smoothly and led us to the audio question of the night. Turns out only one team was able to recognize the theme song for Webster at all. I’ve never seen the show so I can’t say I recognized it either. The question about Wild Wild West was pretty fun too, and it prompted me playing the song, which I added to my playlist after Will Smith kept popping up in trivia sets, now three times in two weeks. Mostly everybody got the question about college hoops correct, with six different conferences having the word ‘big’ in their name.

Halftime was a bit more difficult for several teams; the yoga poses proved rather difficult for most teams, especially with there being three different variations of the warrior pose being there. The other half, with songs that are a girl’s first name, crushed some teams too, since many of those songs are much older songs. Round three’s NFL runningbacks question was a good one I thought, most people tend to forget Jerome Bettis used to be called the battering ram. I also liked the renaissance literature question, I thought it was a cool fact that Shakespeare and Cervantes died within a week of each other.

Round four started out with a tough question about U.S. Presidents who served less than one term. Most teams knew that Ford pardoned Nixon, but the Teapot Dome scandal stumped most teams, and they also got Zachary Taylor mixed up with William Henry Harrison. I was impressed that a few teams were even able to name Max Weinberg, since I’ve never even heard of the guy. The jelly belly question stumped everybody though, with almost every team guessing Fanta instead of Sunkist. The final round led to one team having a substantial lead on the rest of the field and coasting on that lead to a victory.

However, the final question led to a bit of movement, with that said third place went to Rent-A-Swag. Second place went to That’s What You Get For Thinking, making a nice return. Winning tonight, however, on their first visit to Applebee’s, congrats to the No Talent Rummies on taking down the win, and proving they may have a bit of talent after all. Nice job guys! Next week we start with a question about the extremely short-lived TV show Cop Rock, which TV Guide says is the 8th worst show of all time. That should prove to be a very funny question, indeed.

Until next time,
-Chad

One could make an argument that Wednesday little throw down at Bernie’s might be the live trivia game of the Summer! It certainly had feelings of roller-coastery craziness! There was really no telling how it was going to go down until that nasty final was done!

And let’s not even talk about Webster!

Sometimes we all just play bonus chip roulette and see how it plays out. But Sno-Caps were fun…and who doesn’t love an alpaca? Hehe – great times my friends! And many props to our Top 3 Leader Board:

Danny Glover sniped the W with a very strategic ZERO wager! Pulling out the plays! They have invited us all to brush up on our Deceased Pro Wrestlers from the 80’s/ 90’s Era. That is how we will kick it off next Wednesday night!

Until then, be well and I will see you soon..

Two more weeks to go for this summer season and it seems like at least one team is ready for the end of the season Tournament! The scores remained close all game among the 2nd-last place teams, but Stray Cats held a commanding lead today. A whopping 21 points separated them from the 2nd place team at the end of the game (even more after the final question).
For the first time in a PHT game, the entire field was wiped out, not JUST by the final question, but also the final question of Round 4! Round 4 Question 5 and the FINAL BOTH went “0 for” on the field. A unique finish to a game indeed! The round 4 question that killed everyone was a Jelly Belly Orange Soda connection. Unfortunately, those who didn’t know the Jelly Belly fact were just simply guessing a famous Orange Soda brand (Fanta, Shasta, and Crush were among the wrong answers). The rest of the game played fine for most, but Stray Cats took advantage of the 2 point bonuses and shot away from the pack! 2nd place tonight went to Just the Tip (my pre-call to win tonight, THANKS GUYS! But seriously, 2nd is good against this competition). 3rd place was Knock Knock! A strong field of competitors, all of whom I hope will be joining us for the Summer Tournament if they qualify. Keep checking the online standings to find out what you need to do to be there! Until next week guys, I’ll see ya then!1st Place: Stray Cats
2nd Place: Just the Tip
3rd Place: Knock KnockNext week’s category: Weeds

Memories Charcoal House – Mount Airy, MD

WHAT A NIGHT at Memories Charcoal House!! It was absolutely PACKED with a record turnout on one of the most beautiful nights we’ve had all summer. You guys definitely kept me on my toes with the way you were shaking up the scoreboard!
With stellar performances from so many teams, it was a nail biter all the way down to the final question. In the end, after some strategic wagers and brain-melting the scores looked like this: taking home the 3rd place prize were THE MOOPS after a knock-down drag-out fight to the finish! In second just ahead of them were the illustrious MEN & PAUSERS!! But not to be defeated, our venue newcomers took home the top prize: THE HOBGOBLINS!
Their choice of first category next week? CANINE ANATOMY!! Study up and I’ll see you next Wednesday!

The Olney Tavern – Olney, MD

I’m curious to see how teams at the other venues did last night for trivia. Here at The Tavern, we had a great turnout but everyone was getting roughed up by the questions. I don’t think I’ve ever had so many low scores! But even with that, we did need a tie-breaker to settle the top 3, and this is how it ended. Finishing 3rd was Olney The Lonely!

Losing the tie-breaker for another 2nd place finish (they’re still looking for their first win since becoming a team here) was Suck It Trebek!! Winning the tie and the game by doing so was John Lithgow’s Fan Club!! “MLB Record Book” will be their next weeks winners choice, and I’m sure everyone will rebound from this weeks tough game, so study up and come see us Wednesdays for some fun at The Tavern!!

Tonight’s game of Pour House Pub Trivia was a wild one from start to
finish at the Revolution Bar!
Highlights of the Night:

In “We-Love-Your-Team-Name”: Let’s face it, when Mike Hunt Loves the
Hard Questions rolls into town, the game gets at least 50% better with
all the possible sentences I can say using their name. Teehee.

In “I-Dun-Goofed”: A scoring flub happens from time to time.
Occasionally I trip over a word. We laugh, I correct, we move on. But
I never go and say the answer when reading the question. That is,
until tonight, when Alpaca slipped out instead of Llama. Le sigh.

In “Brutal-Puzzle-Page”: We had a crazy hard puzzle page tonight, and
it showed. Both parts had tricky answers that tripped up several
teams.

The final was sadly a total whiff, so the podium was set.

Honorable mention tonight, Mess and Jegg, who would’ve taken second
but had too many players.

Third place tonight, E=MC Hammer!

Second place tonight, GT80 Sauce!

First place tonight, Mike Hunt Loves the Hard Questions!

And in true torturous fashion, Mike Hunt decided to make me squirm a
bit with the category next week. We’re gonna start with “The Scottish
Play” I’m not gonna say it’s name because it’s a damn jinx, but it’s a
shakespearean play about a Scottish King and ghosts and stuff. I’m not
gonna say it, Google it, and study up.

Until then,
Ian
