Oh What a Beautiful Evening… For Thursday Trivia!

Thursday night witnessed Opening Night for the newest member of the Pour House Trivia family!  We are proud to welcome The Links at Challedon to the Thursday night line-up.  I can’t think of a better way to finish off 18 holes of golf than with a round of beers and a round of trivia.  In honor of our newest venue, we snuck in a few golf questions into Thursday night’s set.  We also learned that Tom Waits has one of the weirdest voices in all of pop music.  On to the highlights…

THURSDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (61 teams across seven venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: PC Principals (Fish Market) with 167

–> Highest Score after Round 4: PC Principals (Fish Market) with 159

–> Highest First Half Score: PC Principals (Fish Market) with 90

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): No team takes home the ‘Perfect 21’ Award tonight, though numerous teams came close with just one missed wager on the night.

–> Only three teams scored six points on the 6-4-2 question, recognizing the derivation of the term ‘lynch mob’ dates back to 18th Century Virginian judge Charles Lynch.

–> Five teams scored a perfect 20 on tonight’s halftime page.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (31.7% success rate):

–> All five states admitted into the Union during the 20th Century have names which end in a vowel.  Alaska and Hawaii are two of these states.  Name the other three states.  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Quincy’s Bar in Gaithersburg, MD

Another packed house at Quincy’s led to an interesting finish tonight!  Clever Team Name (which isn’t one) held on to first place throughout the second half to take home the crown.  With just five teams answering the final question correctly, Blue Collar and (It’s just) Breadsticks snuck onto the podium – with Blue Collar edging the ‘sticks in a tiebreaker for second!

If it makes you feel any better, teams, I honestly had never heard Tom Waits before tonight.  It seems as though 90% of you hadn’t either.  Big shout out to Team Patrick, The Lone Wolf, and The O’neiders for coming out tonight for the first time!  Hope you had a good time – and trust me, you can only do better.

Next week’s winner’s choice category, as chosen by Clever Team Name is Woodstock ’69.  They were adamant that the question be about the concert, and not a lewd act by Snoopy’s best friend.  Here’s your recap once again:

First Place:  Clever Team Name

Second Place:  Blue Collar

Third Place:  Breadsticks

Next week’s first category:  Woodstock

I’ll see you next week!

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

Champions!  You broke out your Jazz hands tonight!  On purpose and I even encouraged it…  Many thanks for the lecture on Jazz hands vs Spirit fingers.  Obviously I have not really lived.  What would I do without my Thursday night Champions??  We had a good night, but it wasn’t without it’s tough ones!  That audio question though.. when was the last time so many people missed the audio question?  Anyone else notice that it was the 4th questions in round 3 and 4 that had you all on the ropes?  Interesting watching you all move around.  The new team got quite an education!

For third place tonight, it came down to a tiebreaker between Crudely Drawn Penis and Gang of Four, with the penis falling short (HA!) and Gang of Four grabbing the podium spot.  Second place went to Vitrifiers, and at the top, it was no other than the Power Vacuum powerhouses! N ext week we start with a new one to me: NHRA Drag racing. 1/4 mile at a time!

First Place:  Power Vacuum

Second Place:  Vitrifiers

Third Place:  Gang of Four

Next week’s first category:  NHRA Drag Racing

See you then…

As always, the competition here is fierce, with first place being traded back and forth between several teams… but because of that final question Cake or Death ended up on top with a come from behind victory!

First Place:  Cake or Death

Second Place:  Indians

Third Place:  Thundercats

Lake Linganore in New Market, MD

Sorry for the delay folks!  I had myself a brain fart there regarding tonight’s game of Pour House Trivia at the Lake Linganore Association!

I’ll dispense with the pleasantries and get down to business:

It was a ridiculously close game tonight through the first half, as our first and last place teams were separated by just seven points!  A couple of really tough questions in the second round kept everybody in check.  The second half gave us a little separation, but not for our top teams, as we had a two-way tie for second just ONE POINT behind the leaders.  It was a nail biter of a final, as only one team would come up with the correct answer, and needless to say that team would take home our top prize, but who would it be?  Here are your final results!

First place tonight:  Rock Lobsters (as a duo, no less!)

Second Place:  Sloppy Seconds (appropriately)

Third Place:  Faking Bad (after a tough tiebreaker loss)

Next week’s first category:  Codes and Ciphers

Links at Challedon in Mount Airy, MD

Tonight was Opening Night at The Links of Challedon!  Thank you to everyone who came out to play – it was a nice mix of new teams and veteran squads!  One of the crowd’s favorite questions asked for the name of the van in which Scooby Doo and his pals drove around performing detective work.  We even gave a two-point bonus for the correct spelling of the character known for her knee-high orange socks.  The answer of course was the ‘Mystery Machine’ and the character we needed was Velma (with a ‘V’)!  I can’t wait to be back here for another round of trivia next Thursday night at this fantastic venue.  Here are the final standings for tonight:

First Place:  Balls Out

Second Place:  Steelers

Third Place:  Italian Stallions

Next week’s first category: “Star Wars” (Episodes IV, V, VI)

Fish Market in Alexandria, VA

Something brought in the teams tonight, as we saw more teams tonight than we had on any night over the past two months!  It was raging tonight at the Fish Market, cramming 15 teams into the bar area, all looking to begin their domination of Season XIV on this here Thursday night!  We saw some new teams, some regulars, and even had a few travel teams, including PC Principals (if you follow the World Series stats, you may have heard of them).

Based on their track record, we’d expect PC Principals to come out firing, and that is PRECISELY what they did, leading at the half, though Ant Farm Keyboard was not far behind.  AFK claimed Fish Market as their home venue some time ago and are always looking to defend it when outsiders come in to snatch away their wins.  Last week, they were uprooted by a team from NYC on the final question, tonight they wanted to get back to their winning ways.

PC Principals looked nearly unstoppable tonight; it was gonna take a ton of help for AFK to pull a win out here.  PC did get the 6-4-2 only on the last clue, and even missed a question in the 4th round.  AFK gained two points on them during the 6-4-2 but they missed the same question in the 4th, netting a zero gain on them there.

Going into the final, PC Principals held the lead by four points, just needing a correct response on the final to win. We saw AFK in 2nd, and Mark Ruffalo’s Penis in 3rd place.  Of the 15-team field, only three teams got the final correct, truly a tough one tonight, as all three answers needed to be correct to earn the wager (Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma).  The only catch was that the three teams to get the final correct were already in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, so no harm, no foul, the final standings remain the same!  PC Principals taking down one hell of a win on a very competitive night!  We’re back in a week with more Season XIV trivia action!

First Place:  PC Principals

Second Place:  Ant Farm Keyboard

Third Place:  Mark Ruffalo’s Penis

Guido’s in Frederick, MD

All night it was a back and forth matchup with the two veteran teams of Guido’s trivia: Spitters are Quitters and Tuna Noodle Casserole.  TNC took a lead into the second half, while Spitters took over the lead after the 3rd round with TNC regaining the lead going into the final question.  When it was all said and done, the final decided the outcome with Spitters are Quitters being the only team of the night to get the final question.  It was great filling in for Jon this week!  Here are the final results:

First Place:  Spitters and Quitters

Second Place:  Tuna Noodle Casserole

Third Place:  Kweens
