Monday Welcomed Two New Venues to Pour House Trivia!

The Pour House Trivia family just keeps on growing, as we welcomed not one, but TWO new venues to our weekly line-up, including our first venue in downtown Washington!  That brings our Monday roster to eight venues, and you can read all about them in our nightly recap:

MONDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (50 teams across eight venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Green Machine (Buckeye + Bear) with 164

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Green Machine (Buckeye + Bear), High School Prom (Spider Kelly’s), The A Team (Il Forno) with 157

–> Highest First Half Score: High School Prom (Spider Kelly’s) with 90

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Thanks to a difficult start to the second half, no team managed to score a ‘Perfect 21’ on Monday night.

–> The halftime page played slightly more difficult than normal, yielding an average score of 15.8.  Only three teams (High School Prom, The A Team, and Seasonal Tofu Loaf) landed 20 points.

–> The 6-4-2 question was only slightly easier, with just five teams knowing that peanut butter is now used as a diagnostic test for early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

MONDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (21.4% success rate):

–> Which independent nation takes its name from the Latin word meaning ‘southern’?  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Buckeye + Bear in Washington, DC

Toniiiight! Toniiiiight! Won’t be just any niiiiight, tonight we officially kicked off Pour House Trivia at Buckeye + Bear! <confetti cannon>

The regulars I have come to know and love (or already knew and loved) transitioned easily to the new format, and were complimentary of the changes and of my guilty pleasures playlist.

All four teams were neck and neck through the end of Round Two, impressing me with their knowledge of highlighter sales.  After a perfect puzzle effort by Seasonal Tofu Loaf, we moved onto Round Three.  There was a bit of a kerfuffle early on, but I am grateful that you accept my not being an expert in cardiovascular/circulatory systems.  The outcome of the game would have been the same no matter how points were awarded for that question!

By the time Round Four was underway, Green Machine had pulled ahead of the pack, with STL at their heels, My Drinking Team Has a Quiz Problem in the rearview mirror, and Lonely Bartender in the dust.  All teams were familiar with the invention of the bra, so it came down to strategic wagering.  I think this is the beginning of a beautiful rivalry.  Here are your final standings on our opening night:

First Place:  Green Machine

Second Place:  Seasonal Tofu Loaf

Third Place:  My Drinking Team Has A Quiz Problem

Next week’s first category: Nobel prize winners for literature

Until we quiz again,

Novel Prize Winners Trivia

DRP in Alexandria, VA

The Monday before Thanksgiving has everyone thinking of the upcoming holiday.  But for us here at DRP tonight, everyone was focused on Monday trivia instead.

Teams were really on point tonight.  For some of our easier questions, all the teams turning in their answers within one minute, such as identifying Windex glass cleaner or baby’s breath flowers.  Other questions had teams not knowing the answer outright, but figuring it out anyways, such as deducing Troy Polamalu was the NFL player with a voice cameo in the upcoming Disney film “Moana”.

The final question, however, left many teams scratching their heads.  In trying to identify the country named after the Latin for “southern”, many simply thought of Sudan or Suriname as they contain spellings of “south” in other languages.  Only two teams realized that the true Latin was “australis”, which could only lead to Australia.

This caused a massive lead change at the end, which ended up as follows:

First Place: HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff

Second Place: DRD

Third Place: Wingardium Mimosa

Next week’s first category: Shenandoah National Park

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!  Until next time,

~ Chris

Greene Turtle in Hagerstown, MD

Thanksgiving week started out here at the Greene Turtle, and we even opened up with a question about football, more specifically NFL Head Coaches.  The question asked for the two AFC head coaches who have been with the same team for 13 or more seasons, which are Bill Belichick and Marvin Lewis.  We even had a Thanksgiving themed halftime page, asking about people with birds in their names (like a turkey), and answers whose letters are found in “Happy Turkey Day”.

The final question tonight asked about country name origins, and ended up being pretty tough.  Turns out this changed a few things around, as third place went to the Cobras, second went to What Else Could it Be?!?!, and tonight’s winners were That’s A Niner!  Next week we start out with some singing, this time “Chad Sings A Muppet Christmas Carol”, so this should be interesting…  I’ll see you all then!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Until next time,

~ Chad

Morgan Inn in Woodbine, MD

Back again at Morgan Inn in Woodbine for another fantastic Monday edition of Pour House Trivia!  Unfortunately, we stumped the bar in the 1st round with a (not so) famous Muppet character; however they all recovered well with their knowledge of 80’s films and the current NBA rosters. We had the letter X come up a couple times tonight both in regards to toys and your laundry needs.  Folks have a Happy Thanksgiving, and I’ll see you all here again next week.  Here are the results:

First Place:  Men & Pausers

Second Place:  Three Kix

Third Place:  Trouble Follows

Next week’s first category:  Donald Trump

Hershey’s Restaurant in Gaithersburg, MD

I had really fun battle for 1st place at the second night of trivia at our new venue Hershey’s Restaurant! 2 teams really kept it close almost matching every answer and points, and at the end we looked like this… In 3rd we had Ghost Face Quizzah, 2nd went to Smellanella, and our 1st place winners were Low Expectations!! They picked “The Washington Capitals” for next weeks winners choice, so study up and come check out the AMAZING food along with a fun game of trivia at Hershey’s Restaurant!!

Uno Pizzeria in Frederick, MD

Our inaugural night of Pour House Trivia at PIzzeria Unos went off with a bang! Amid the frigid and windy weather, the lounge was hot as we sped through the night!

Highlights of the Night:

In “Needs-More-Girl-Power”: The Girls Who Rock question was a tough one tonight; no one was able to pull Of Monsters and Men, and No Doubt was almost as tricky! We need to expose you guys to more girl rockers! While we’re at it, we need more girl rockers in general! I demand more Girls Who Rock!

In “Overthinking-the-Easy-Ones”: The bane of all trivia teams, is the dreaded overthinking curse. Questions that should be home-runs turn into heart-wrenching strikeouts. And tonight we had a big one that closed the gap significantly between the top teams! Always be careful of the overthink!

In “That-Can’t-Be-Right”: I’ve had enough Manhattans to know what Vermouth is. Or at least, I thought it did. I could’ve sworn up and down that it was a kind of whiskey. But apparently it actually is a fortified wine? That don’t seem right…my teams were just as confused by it, but thankfully no one fell victim to the overthinking curse on that one.

With a tricky final not changing much, the standings of our first night of Pouor House Trivia were locked in!

Third Place:  Three Losers

Second Place:  Manischewitz and His Grapes of Wrath

First Place:  Taking home the $50 cash prize and top honors, Nostrodumass!

Great first game everyone! Next week we’ll kick things off with a category on the comedy film Airplane! It will surely be a fun one! Just don’t call me Shirley. Study up, and we’ll see you next time!

Until then,

~ Ian

Airplane! Movie Trivia

Spider Kelly’s in Arlington, VA

Gobble Gobble!  It’s almost turkey time y’all, and nine teams gathered round the table to feast on some trivia at Spider Kelly’s in Clarendon tonight.  Besides a Wrestlemania question setting a couple teams off to a slow start, round one seemed fairly easy for most of our teams.  And I only got ONE team who answered “The Rock” to our Disney’s Moana question – most teams actually knew it was Troy Polamalu who was the Super Bowl winner voicing a character.  Round 2 saw some teams struggle on the audio clue, but mostly breezy until the puzzle.  They found this week’s harder than last!  Only one team scored perfectly on the puzzle, and the average was around 15.

Round 3 featured two questions which really stumped our teams.  The first was the movie re-make of Dial M for Murder – only one team was able to name both movies!  And two teams were able to guess the “no dry cleaning” symbol.  Round 4 also saw quite a few goose eggs on our Cable TV, British history, and biblical figure questions.  As usual High School Prom took an early lead, but 2nd and 3rd were a close race to the end.  Only half our teams knew today’s final answer putting 6th place Jimmy’s in Vegas all the way to 2nd place for naming Australia as the correct answer.  (And they left before prizes were handed out! Always stay to the end, guys!  Don’t worry, I’ll have it for you next week)  Winners were:

First Place:  High School Prom

Second Place:  Jimmys in Vegas

Third Place:  Kitten Mittens

Next week’s first category:  Woodrow Wilson

Il Forno Pizzeria in Frederick, MD

Last trivia night at il Forno until our holiday break starts, we saw a lot of folks come out tonight to get their trivia fix in before Thanksgiving! I’m thankful for trivia, football, pizza, all of which made an appearance at tonight’s game! Twas the perfect place to be pre-holiday!

The A Team won last week on a wacky turn of events, being the only team to pick up the final correct, jumping up about 9 places and stealing the win. An usual position for that team to be in, tonight they’d make up for it by putting on the pain early, holding a 6 point lead at the half! The A Team scored the only perfect halftime page, an omen for things to come.

They didn’t let up in Round 3 or 4 either, getting nearly every point that came their way and preserving that lead going into the final question. It was NOT a run away though as Stink Floyd was sitting happily in 2nd place against a HUGE field of teams, back by about 10 points. He’d need a slip-up from the A Team to have a shot at this.

The way they’d been playing all night, it didn’t seem possible that the A Team would miss the final. Sure enough, they did not, locking up their 2nd consecutive win, going into the holiday break with some momentum! Great game! 2nd place to Stink Floyd in a well fought battle. Volcano Insurance rounds out the top 3 with a correct get on the final! Back next Monday, until then! Happy Holidays every body!
