Monday Trivia Will Always Love You!

alt text

Fourteen Pour House Trivia locations were open for trivia business on Monday for a total of 165 teams.

FIRST ROUND:

We started the game with questions on the trio of NFL teams in California and the Monty Python comedy troupe, before diving into this three-parter about actors who have portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge:

  • 1)  In a motion-capture Disney film, he portrayed Scrooge and three ghosts.
  • 2)  Four years after portraying a dirty rotten scoundrel, he played Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol.
  • 3)  In The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol, this sitcom actor voiced Grouchy Smurf (the Smurf version of Ebenezer Scrooge).

Only 38% of teams earned their wager for knowing the first two answers, Jim Carrey and Michael Caine, but the only team to get all three for also remembering George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf was Hungry Guys (Ragtime). No perfect scores were recorded in this round.

SECOND ROUND:

A quick and simple second round kicked off with an audio question that played three holiday songs in 8-bit style. Other topics in this round included the broccoli featured in the dish chicken divan, the Western Australia city of Perth, and Stradivari’s famous violins. This was the only round with more than one perfect score on Monday; here, 43 teams earned every posssible point.

HALFTIME:

The top section of Monday’s halftime page asked teams to identify various cooking techniques such as the julienne and basting; the bottom half was a yes-or-no about whether each listed country is landlocked. The average score was 18.3 points, while 34 teams reached halftime perfection. These teams led the lot at halftime:

THIRD ROUND:

Early in the third round, we went to the theater:

  • The most recent Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album went to the Broadway revival of which Stephen Sondheim musical?

The hardest wagering question of the night saw 16% of the field correctly identify Into the Woods. Later, a quote from The Walking Dead had a 4.84% bonus rate; not many teams knew that Dale said If I had known the world was ending, I would’ve brought better books. The only team to navigate the third round to a perfect score was Alcoholics Unanimous (Rockwell).

FOURTH ROUND:

The rings in gymnastics were named by 83% of the field for the full six points on the 6-4-2! A three-part question for Brad Pitt’s 60th birthday was a toughie for our teams:

  • 1) His first Academy Award nomination was for which film where he portrayed mental patient Jeffrey Goines?
  • 2) He was last seen on screen in which 2022 film as Jack Conrad?
  • 3) In the early 2000s starring alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, he voiced the role of which fictional mariner?

Those answers, respectively, are Twelve MonkeysBabylon, and Sinbad (from Legend of the Seven Seas). This question had a 20% success rate with a 4.24% bonus rate. Two questions later, we asked about the Yule Cat of Icelandic folklore, which proved to be a me-owch for the field; only 23% of teams knew of that mythical feline. Again, there were no perfect scores in this round. Before the final question, these were the top scores:

FINAL QUESTION (63.03% success rate):

  • During the 1990s, which singer spent 14 straight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a cover song?

For her cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You, Whitney Houston spent more than three months atop the chart! However, no teams were able to use that answer to earn Monday’s Perfect 21 feat. These were the game’s highest-scoring teams:

One honorable mention for the night: Ten Thousand Dugongs (Ragtime) earned 164 points playing over the limit of seven players.
