Mojitos and daiquiris – perfect for Thanksgiving eve eve! Pour House Trivia Tuesday recap

Pour House pub trivia‘s Tuesday got into a little mixology and shook up some daiquiris for the fine live trivia crowds in Maryland and Virginia!

Check em’ out, would ya?

Capitol City Brewing Company – Arlington, VA

One last game at Capitol City Brewing in Shirlington before the holiday season kicks in, and the holiday week gave us a visit from one our less-frequent visitors: Title One Forever.  They only have the chance to play every two or three months, but they are ALWAYS near the top of the standings.  Tonight was no exception, as they held a nice lead through halftime.  A small hiccup on the Three Clues question cost them the lead, but a key two point bonus on our NFL MVPs question landed them with a one-point lead heading into the final question.  They was definitely some trepidation on tonight’s final, but Title One was able to hold on for the win.  Capitol City Goofballs took second, with Valley Girls in third.  next week, we’ll be back to begin the game with a question on Wilford Brimley!  ~ Matt

Champion Billiards – Frederick, MD

You all had me busier than I will be on thursday making a full Thanksgiving dinner! Champions! Making me work for it! 25 teams when all was said and done came out for a little pre holiday brain stretching. Was nice to see some familiar faces getting in their game play before we shut down on thursday. Gotta love that holiday shake up, different faces, different scoreboards!

We had a good night out here, some full contact answer running traffic and everyone had a good chuckle at Rypien. At least I didn’t butcher the mythology question too much! Some people really wanted DC to be San Juan, give it a month or so and I’ll be right there with you with that particular wish.

Found out Zebulon was not one of the Boys II Men group, and I was very sorry not to be able to award 69 points for a correct answer of wood. Disney went over pretty well, as expected, but there was one question, one rather alcoholic question that drove most of you to drink tonight- that damn Daiquiri!

The final was taken in stride by most of you, and we ended up with a tie between Fat kids are hard to kidnap (Or Pleasantly plump children are hard to abscond) and Quiz in my pants- after a little jaunt up Pike’s Peak, it was Fat Kids who took the 3rd place podium spot! 2nd went to Jungle Fever, and 1st was Wiser but still dead! Nice job beating out a helluva field tonight!

Have a very good, tasty and safe Thanksgiving everyone and I will see you next week when we start out with Famous Jailbait Girlfriends! Oh this one should be fun.

Cugini’s Restaurant – Poolesville, MD

Tuesday night again and the only place to be is Cugini’s here in Poolesville!

It was nearly a blowout after the first half but many teams held on and buckled down to make it competitive at the end.

Here are the results:
U Talking to Me in 1st
Chuck Rodent in 2nd
You Never Know in 3rd

Our first category for next week is four letter words – keep it clean?

Celebrity Bar and Grill, Hollywood Casino – Perryville, MD

Last night’s game at the Celebrity Bar & Grill was kinda unusual – I think it was the first time that the majority of teams did better in rounds 3 and 4 than they did in rounds 1 and 2. I can’t speak for other hosts of the Pour House family, but for me, it’s always the opposite!

In 3rd place tonight, we had Bucks Minions! Holding onto 2nd after the final was American Outlaws, and running away with the win once they moved into 1st after round 2 was Bird Bros.!!!

They decided to go with Hanna-Barbera Cartoons for next week’s winner’s choice category, so have a FANTASTIC Thanksgiving with family and friends, and I’ll see everyone next week at the Celebrity Bar & Grill!!

Greene Turtle – Hagerstown, MD

Another fun-filled night of live trivia at the Green Turtle in Hagerstown. We got plenty of room for more teams so spread the word if you’d like a new challenge. It was some of the regulars that took the prizes home tonight; That’s a Niner missed the final, but still pulled off third place. The Cobras had a strategic wager that brought them into second. And Cotton Candy took it all for first place.

Next week the Winner Choice is A Christmas Story.

Monkey La La – Frederick, MD

Feisty, feisty, feisty! We had ourselves a lil’ Thanksgiving Eve Eve ROMP tonight at Monkey La La! We came out of the gates fast and did not slow down! We even had a live trivia game break out 🙂

I guess though when you kick off the night with “Things that are Fuzzy” you should be ready to go! And that we did. It was “tribbles” to open the night. Follow that up with Playboy and some Disney characters and BOOM baby – Round 1 was on!

The set was not easy though by any means. And we had a few toughies for sure! I did enjoy the daiquiri question (mostly because I do LOVE me some LIME DAIQUIRIS)!

Thanks for coming out and playing tonight everyone. New teams too! Hope you all can make it back next Tuesday evening for another round. Congrats to our leaders tonight who took down some La La loot and some PHT points!

Orioles Nest #331 – Frederick, MD

Tonight we played our last game before Thanksgiving break comes up, as well as the last game of November. The game tonight ended up being a bit tougher than usual, with a few questions proving difficult throughout the set. The game opened with a question about the song “Ice Ice Baby”, asking about the highway that is mentioned in the song, the A1A, which only a few teams managed to get. However, the rest of the opening round proved to be on the easier side, as the only question that any teams missed was the NBA teams question, which asked about the only team in the NBA that is undefeated, as well as the only team that hasn’t won a single game yet.

Tonight’s audio question asked about the theme song for the TV show “Las Vegas”, which also ended up being pretty tough. I only recognized it because my dad loved that show when it was on the air. However, the question that ended up causing some serious problems for a few teams was the cocktail question that came up later in the round. We were looking for a cocktail with the main ingredients of rum, lime juice, and sugar or another sweetener, which is a daiquiri, but almost every team ended up putting mojito, which also contains mint as a main ingredient. The first half ended with a question about Scott Pilgrim, which is one of my favorite movies. I also really happy a few teams knew the name of his band, Sex Bob-omb!

Halftime was Thanksgiving themed, with pictures of fictional characters in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as having to identify movies that take place around Thanksgiving based on the plot description. Heading into halftime a few teams were ahead of the pack due to the daiquiri question tripping up several teams pretty badly. The third round ended up being okay for most teams, although the question about Alex Trebek hosting The National Geographic Bee Finals for 25 years caught a few teams. The round ended with a question about Pike’s Peak, and only one team knew that Pike’s first name is actually Zebulon (not making that up, I swear!).

The 6-4-2 tonight asked about the most populous U.S. city that is NOT found in a U.S. state, which was talking about the city of Washington D.C. The final round started with a question about a notorious execution, with Mary Surratt being executed for her part in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The next question asked about a 1970’s film, and it ended up being almost a 50/50 for several teams between “The Towering Inferno” and “The Poseidon Adventure”, with “The Towering Inferno” being the correct answer. I liked the Super Bowl MVP question about the only two Super Bowl MVP winners who were not born in the United States, which were Mark Rypien (he’s Canadian) and Hines Ward (he was born in South Korea).

The round ended with a few easier questions about carpal tunnel and Medusa, who is one of the Gorgon sisters. Heading into the final question a few teams were pretty far ahead of the others, with the final question being in the category of The Periodic Table. The final question talked about the elements whose symbols are based on their Latin names, asking for the element/symbol pairing whose symbol comes first alphabetically. The answer, which a good number of teams were able to figure out, was Silver, whose symbol is Ag, due to the Latin name being Argentum.

In the end, third place went to Ignorance is Bliss who ended up putting together a good game. Second place went to Black Steel, who held the lead for most of the first three rounds before faltering on the 1970’s movie question. Winning tonight, congrats goes out to We’ve Embraced Our Mediocrity, who made a special guest appearance with us at the Orioles Nest. Next week we start out with a question about Disney Tsum Tsum, which apparently is a new game that is starting to become popular with the kids these days. I’ve never heard of it, but oh well. I’ll see you all again next week, and again Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Until next time,
-Chad

Quincy’s South – Rockville, MD

Tonight was the last live trivia game before the holidays and it was great to see everyone coming out to make the final appearance! Some teams even seemed to be missing some players but still managed to put together a squad for a last minute trivia fix before all that turkey, football, and, oh yeah, giving thanks. We even had an out-of-town team come join us tonight, who actually had a great showing tonight, but more on that in a bit.

If We Lose the Terrorists Win were off to a strong start, holding down the top spot going into the half by a significant margin. A pretty decisive lead was lost when they went for the 6 points on the 6-4-2 and missed it, keeping the game closer than it had been all game. Our out-of-towners, The Moops, took full advantage, nailing the 6 point clue which gave them the ability to tie the game going into the fourth round!

Round 4 didn’t hit with too much gusto so our scores weren’t too far off what they looked like going in. We had a tie in first place between If We Lose the Terrorists Win and The Moops going into the final. 3rd place was Uncle Jack but they weren’t far ahead of Quiz in My Pants who took 2nd last week and were aiming for a top 3 finish once again. The final question played about 75% correct and those who got it were rewarded. Uncle Jack, though only up by 1 on Quiz in My Pants, bet defensively with a 1 wager. It turned out to be a smart wager because they missed the final BUT it didn’t help them as Quiz nailed it and were able to move ahead.

If We Lose and The Moops BOTH got the final correct with a max wager therefore forcing the tie breaker question of the night. Whoever would be closest to the height of Pike’s Peak would be crowned our pre-holiday champion. The actual height was 14,150 feet. The Moops guessed 8,500. If We Lose guessed an atonishing 14,500, less than 400 feet off of the actual total! Super impressive and with that they take down the WIN! Great game! It was close there for a second; thought the out of town team might be able to come in and snipe a win but If We Lose were able to defend their home turf! An exciting finish!

That concludes our game! Thanks everyone! Have a good holiday! I’ll be 10 lbs heavier when I see you again. I’m super excited haha. Football, food, family, friends, all my favorite “F”s on the same day. I think I might be forgetting one… Until next week. See ya soon 😉

Senor Tequila’s – Germantown, MD

Senor Tequila’s got it’s legs under it and got off and running with tonight’s game of Pour House Pub Trivia! It was a hot one!

Highlights of the Night:

In “Enter-The-Newbies”: We had a massive influx of new teams join the regulars tonight, which shook up the game a lot more than I think anyone was expecting!

In “Someone-Get-Me-A-Drink”: So many mojito answers on the daiquiri question and so many death glares – please don’t hate me! This was a game-changer tonight!

In “Who-Are-These-People?!”: William Bradford? Mary Surratt? Mark Rypien? Who are these people?! And how do you all know them?!

The final had a last minute shake-up to an already crazy night!

In third place, the John Lithgow Fan Club!

In second place, Irish Wristwatch!

In first place, Heroes in a Half Shell!
Great game everyone! Next week we’re gonna kick things off with a little Mario Kart! So get your controllers ready and get studying!

Until then,

Tilted Kilt – Frederick, MD

With a packed house of trivia teams hungry for a good game (and probably some stuffing, too), we gave them what they wanted. It was a particularly difficult set, but our teams were more than ready to answer the challenge.

After a stumper of a Winner’s Choice category, we learned all about the Assassination of President Lincoln, the difference between a daquiri and a mojitio, and that Adam Sandler movie about a washed up comedian… you know… ALL OF THEM.

With time running out, our teams made last-ditch efforts to close the gap between first and second, but to no avail. Ahead by enough going into the final, Poovey Farms elected to bet zero and take home first. Second place went to FNQ, and third to Dewey, Cheatem and Howe.

Poovey Farms has selected “Hamilton: The Musical” as next week’s first category, so brush up on your Tony Award nominee and I’ll see you next week.
