Logging on to Monday Trivia!

Monday night’s edition of Pour House Trivia was played at 15 locations for a total of 172 teams, including 20 at Aslin Beer Co.

The first regular question of the evening proved to be the first round’s hardest bonus chance. We asked about the awards won by singer Harry Styles this year, and only about a quarter of the field was able to name his most recent album, Harry’s House. From there, we gave these Three Clues about a specific food:

  • This food’s name is in the title of a painting currently hanging in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
  • Its scientific name is Solanum tuberosum.
  • Destruction of this crop in the mid-19th century caused mass starvation in Ireland.

The potato was correctly identified by 27% of teams before the third clue was revealed. A night-high seven perfect scores were recorded in this round.

With a bonus rate right in between the two aforementioned questions, 26% of our teams knew all three musicals that shared an opening two-word phrase in their respective titles: Peter Frampton‘s Show Me the WayRobyn‘s Show Me Love, and the Backstreet Boys with Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely. Two questions later, we reached the first half’s toughest wagering query:

  • Last month, Brian Harman became the third left-handed golfer to win which major championship?

After Bob Charles in 1963 and Phil Mickelson 50 years later, we have Harman as the 2023 Open Championship winner. The end of the round featured a question about 7-Up‘s mascot known as Cool Spot which appeared in multiple 90s video games; 16% of the field provided the mascot’s name for bonus credit. The only perfect team in the second round was H.R. Pufnstuf (DRP).

The top of the halftime page had teams identify photo subjects which were also names of MLB teams. For the bottom section, players had to name the institute of higher learning each list of three famous people attended. There were 19 perfect scores here, with the average tally being 15.7 points. Two teams reached the 90-point level by the halftime break:

  • You Had Me at Chester Arthur (Cushwa): 91
  • Slainte (DRP): 90
  • Jeff Cab for Cutie (Clyde’s): 89
  • Hipster Fashion Consultants (DRP): 88
  • First on First (Aslin): 88
  • I’m With Byron (Bushwaller’s): 88

We visited the world of computer games early in the second half:

  • This computer game series began with The Secret of the title location in 1990, followed by a sequel subtitled LeChuck’s Revenge. What is the name of this point-and-click adventure series with a mammal in its title?

Exactly one-fourth of our teams knew those games were in the Monkey Island series. We transitioned to a different screen two questions later:

  • Matt LeBlanc portrayed a fictionalized version of himself on which Showtime series that aired its final installment in 2017?

The series known as Episodes was named by 29% of the field. Finally, a science question proved to be a tough bonus opportunity:

  • These three elements have German names of Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff, and Stickstoff, respectively meaning water substance, acid substance, and smothering substance. What are the English names of those elements?

Just 5.8% of teams knew all three: hydrogenoxygen, and nitrogen. Partly due to that question, a perfect score eluded the field in this round.

The economic concept of inflation was named by nine teams early enough to receive all six points in Monday’s 6-4-2. Subjects in this round included the film remake of 1984’s Footloose, the return of McDonald’s Szechuan sauce, and literary works set in Chicago. However, the end of this round brought a tough Triple 50/50 in which teams had to tell whether each of this trio was a dog breed or a European music group:

  • 1) Alcazar,  2) Lagotto Romagnolo,  3) Mudi

In order, they are a Swedish music group, an Italian dog breed, and a Hungarian dog breed. Bonus points were earned by 13% of the field for getting all three right. There were six perfect teams in the fourth round. These teams had the best scores before the final question:

  • Hipster Fashion Consultants (DRP): 159
  • Slainte (DRP): 158
  • How Did I Get Here? (Quincy’s): 157
  • Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s): 155

FINAL QUESTION (41.28% success rate):

  • An ancient Greek word meaning steersman is the source of which prefix commonly used in words relating to computers?

Just over two-fifths of our teams were able to provide that correct prefix, cyber-. Slainte (DRP) and Ten Thousand Dugongs (Ragtime) reached a Perfect 21 on Monday. The night’s final standings were led by these teams:

  • Hipster Fashion Consultants (DRP): 171
  • Slainte (DRP): 170
  • How Did I Get Here? (Quincy’s): 169
  • Ten Thousand Dugongs (Ragtime): 165
  • You Had Me at Chester Arthur (Cushwa): 164
  • Gong Gong and the Butt Demons (Cushwa): 163
  • Jeff Cab for Cutie (Clyde’s): 161
  • I’m With Byron (Bushwaller’s): 160
