Let’s Collaborate on Some Great Weekend Trivia!
For two of our four weekend venues, the house championship was decided not only by the last game, but by the last question as well! In each case, we had teams vying for the very impressive achievement of Double House Champions. These teams expect to be formidable opponents in two weeks at World Series XIV. Here is your nightly recap:
WEEKEND STATS AND FACTS (20 teams across four venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Fisted Sister (Captain Benders) with 162
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Fisted Sister (Captain Benders) with 162
–> Highest First Half Score: Fisted Sister (Captain Benders) with 92
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions and final): Fisted Sister (Captain Benders)
–> Our halftime rounds both played relatively normal, with an average of 16.2 on Saturday and 16.9 on Sunday. The only team to score a perfect 20 was (no surprise) Fisted Sister.
–> Uncle Jack snagged the only 6-point clue this weekend on our 6-4-2 questions this weekend, by knowing that FDR was the first U.S. President to be inaugurated on January 20th.
SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (0.0% success rate):
–> Throughout his career, Tom Hanks has appeared in four different films directed by Steven Spielberg. Name ANY THREE of these films.
SUNDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (60.0% success rate):
–> Named for a group of Pacific islands, what is the only breed of penguin that makes its natural habitat in a location north of the Equator? (you’ll find the answers later in this blog)
Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD
Tonight I had the pleasure of filling in for the legendary Ronnie here at Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, and it was definitely a fun time. I saw some faces that I recognized and a few I didn’t, and the game definitely had its interesting moments. We kicked things off with a question about the Boston Red Sox (Ugh…), asking about the two teams they faced off against in the ALCS the most often. Most teams got the NY Yankees, but the Oakland Athletics was a much less popular answer. I liked the audio question for tonight, which asked about songs that are turning ten years old in 2017. The question wanted teams to identify the musical acts being played which were Amy Winehouse (Back to Black), Gwen Stefani (The Sweet Escape), and The Red Hot Chili Peppers (Dani California).
Halftime asked teams to identify fictional characters whose names started with the letter “G”, as well as unscrambling pro sports team names from anagrams. It turns out that Groundskeeper Willie isn’t as well known as I thought initially, and neither is Gargamel.
In the second half, things changed big time after the question about children’s games, which asked about a playground game also known as knucklebones or fivestones. Teams were split between marbles and jacks on this question, with the answer being Jacks. The final question of the night was about film collaborations and turned out to be a tough one, as nobody got the answer right. This led to some changes in the standings due to some crafty wagering; (honorable mention to Disturbed and Sad but Social who had too many people) third place went to Turd Ferguson, while second place went to All Out of Bubblegum, and the win tonight went to Uncle Jack! Congrats!
NEXT WEEK’S SATURDAY NIGHT GAME AT BELLES’ WILL BE PART OF THE PHT MARYLAND PUB CRAWL. OUR NEXT REGULAR GAME HERE WILL BE SATURDAY, JAN. 28th.
For our game on January 28th, we will start things out with a question about Films Set in San Francisco, so good luck with that! Ronnie will be back then, so thanks for having me!
Until next time,

Pretzel and Pizza Creations in Hagerstown, MD
We had a nice group of competitive teams at Pretzel & Pizza Creations on Saturday night! The top three teams kept REALLY close almost the entire night, which is why we had ties for either 1st or 2nd place after almost every round INCLUDING going into the final question. Almost every team went the strategic route, as each went with a different wagering amount. While no one came up with the correct response, so no tiebreaker was needed! The four films we were looking for were “Saving Private Ryan”, “Catch Me If You Can”, “The Terminal”, and the recent drama “Bridge of Spies”.
Here are your top teams:
First Place: Give Us Your Beer Money
Second Place: Cobras
Third Place: Off Beats
THERE IS NO TRIVIA AT PRETZEL AND PIZZA CREATIONS ON JAN. 21st DUE TO THE POUR HOUSE PLAYOFFS. OUR NEXT GAME HERE WILL BE SATURDAY, JAN. 28th.
Next game’s first category: Moons of the Solar System
Good luck to all my teams this Saturday, and I’ll see everyone back here in two weeks at Pretzel & Pizza Creations!

Captain Benders Tavern in Sharpsburg, MD
Welcome to the new team Kraken! Well, not entirely new, but new to Captain Benders. Tonight’s game was intense, as Fisted Sister held on to first place the entire game by a wide margin, but second place was a cage fight. What Else Could It Be?, Manischewitz and His Grapes of Wrath, and Bohs & Hoes all variously held second, third or fourth each round. When it came to the final, the good old zero wager turned out to be pretty useful. Nailing the final, Manischewitz snuck up into third place and What Else Could It Be? settled into second. The invitations to the playoffs went out to Bohs & Hoes and Fisted Sister, but congratulations goes out to What Else Could It Be? for winning the Season XIV House Championship BY ONE POINT! That’s almost as exciting as a field goal in the last second of a play off game between Dallas and Green Bay!
Next week’s first category: Burgess Meredith
The Beacon in Frederick, MD
Our Sunday game at The Beacon in Frederick got pretty intense at the close of the night! There was some good competition in the house, so by the time we reached the final question, we had a tie for second place, and with the scores so close at that point, it was anyone’s game! Not surprisingly, we still needed to to use a tie breaker to figure out the order of our top three teams, and this is how it looked…
First Place: Witiots
Second Place: Survivors
Third Place: We Need a Team Name
Next week’s first category: U.S.State Capitals
Good luck to my playoff bound teams here, and I’ll see ya’ll next Sunday at The Beacon!
