King of the Wild Trivia Frontier!
A record crowd highlighted last weekend’s games, as host Scott welcomed 26 TEAMS to Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont! That game accounted for more than half of the entire weekend field, which also included our newest venue, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club in downtown Frederick. Overall, 47 teams took part at five different venues:
FIRST ROUND:
Opening round topics from last weekend included Caribbean islands, the original version of Trivial Pursuit, and namesakes for chemical elements. For our audio questions, the Friday teams dealt with songs that had been re-recorded as eight-bit video game music, while Saturday’s audio question featured songs with spoken word lyrics, including this catchy tune:
In both the first and second round, we saw four teams earn perfect scores.
HALFTIME:
Topics such as child actors and the works of Andy Warhol highlighted the weekend halftime pages. Overall, we saw seven teams record perfect scores with an overall average of 14.8 points. Here are your highest scoring weekend teams after two rounds of play:
- Uncle Jack (Belles’): 91
- Irish Beer Money (Pretzel & Pizza Creations): 88
- Comfortably Dum (Belles’): 87
- This is How We Go Down (Springfield Manor Winery): 86
- Smarty Pants (Belles’): 86
SECOND HALF:
The most difficult wagering question of the weekend was asked at the close of Friday’s third round:
–> An Australian island is not the only thing named for this Dutch explorer. What is the last name of the explorer who is the namesake for the body of water that divides Australia and New Zealand?
Only three of our Friday teams knew enough Pacific Ocean geography to arrive at the correct answer of (Abel) Tasman, namesake for both Tasmania and the Tasman Sea:
We took a trip to the art gallery to find the most difficult question from Saturday’s game:
–> Which post-Impressionist painted dozens of works which were given titles in both French and Tahitian?
Only three of our Saturday teams remembered that anytime you hear ‘Tahiti’ and ‘painter’ in the same question, the answer is always Paul Gauguin. The only perfect scores from the second half of this weekend’s games were turned in by Uncle Jack (Belles’), Demented and Sad But Social (Belles’), and Off Beats (Pretzel & Pizza Creations), who each notched 36 third round points. These were your highest scoring weekend teams heading into the final question:
- Uncle Jack (Belles’): 166
- Irish Beer Money (Pretzel & Pizza Creations): 159
- Off Beats (Pretzel & Pizza Creations): 156
- Comfortably Dum (Belles’): 151
- Demented and Sad But Social (Belles’): 151
- Smarty Pants (Belles’): 151
FRIDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (20.0% success rate):
–> After losing an 1834 election for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, who said: “I told the people of my district that if they saw fit to re-elect me, I would serve them as faithfully as I had done. But if not, you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas”?
SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (41.7% success rate):
–> What is the name given to the official currency of Angola, a currency that can be used year-round, not just from December 26 to January 1?
The correct answers to these questions were Davy Crockett and the Kwanza. Congratulations to the Off Beats (Pretzel & Pizza Creations), who turned in the only Perfect 21 of the weekend. Here is your final weekend leaderboard:
