It’s Tricky… to Win a Night of Tuesday Trivia!

I love our roster of Tuesday night venues and teams here at Pour House Trivia.  With 12 different games going down at the same time, it’s fun to see which questions stumped certain bars, while playing much easier at other locations.  Every venue seems to have its own set of strengths and weaknesses.  But with more than 80 teams playing tonight, who would emerge as the best and the brightest?

TUESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (82 teams across 12 venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Newton’s Minions (Champion Billiards) with 171

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Comfortably Dum (Champion Billiards) with 165

–> Highest First Half Score: Comfortably Dum (Champion Billiards) with 91

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Demented and Sad but Social (Monkey La La)

–> Despite an average score of 17.5 on the halftime sheet, only three teams (FNQ, Barflies, and Get Smart) scored a perfect 20.  Maybe European comic book characters aren’t your thing…

–> Five teams snagged six points on the 6-4-2, by knowing that Paul Bunyan is the namesake for two different ‘trophy games’ in the Big Ten Conference.

–> Poovey Farms (Tilted Kilt) has started Season XIV with a four-game winning streak, and is now on the PHT Wall of Fame!

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (59.4% success rate):

–>The single “It’s Like That” / “Sucker M.C.’s” was the first release from which act, who in 2009 became just the second hip hop group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Whole Foods Market in Ashburn, VA

Well…that was quite the night.  We packed the house full for our final weekly game, and it was interesting to say the least.  I couldn’t pronounce names that were clear in front of me, my mic died…..and you guys loved every second.

Thank you for everything.  Like I said its not goodbye, but having a loyal player base week in and week out…means the world folks.  Here’s how tonight’s game finished:

First Place:  Minivan Mafia

Second Place:  Get Smart

Third Place:  Kelly’s Heroes

Next month’s first category:  Serial Killers

See you then!

~ Zach

DON’T FORGET that Whole Foods Market switches to a MONTHLY schedule from this point forward.  Pour House Trivia will take place on the FIRST Tuesday of each month.  The next game will be held on Tuesday, November 1.  Thanks!

Capitol City Brewing in Arlington, VA

I’ll tell you this, I’ve been all over this great country and I’ve heard stories about other, low-energy trivia nights.  Stories like you wouldn’t believe, folks, like you wouldn’t believe, what some people, tremendous people, are telling me.  But I’m telling you, Capitol City Brewing Company is Making Trivia Great Again – ba-leeve me.  We have the biggest, classiest, most luxurious team names, the most tremendous prizes, we are always winning and winning bigly, folks.

Tuesday night was a hard-fought game, with several teams neck-and-neck at the top of the scoreboard all the way to the end.  A devastating A+B=C question threw some of our sharpest regular teams for a loop, and the wily barflies of “Show Me on the Doll” held onto a modest lead to claim first prize!  Your winner’s circle:

First Place:  Show Me on the Doll

Second Place: Menace 2 Sobriety (playing as “Menace 2 the Valley”)

Third Place:  God Complex Particles

Next week’s first category:  Rob Zombie

Our gag prize tonight for “funniest wrong answer” went to a rowdy gaggle of newcomers, the “Crazy Ladies” (their words, not mine) who rocked these cheap Halloween mustaches with flair.  Hopefully we see them – and the rest of you – next week for another red-hot trivia night at Cap City!

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

It’s not often I need to chase teams away from the billiard tables like I was the Music Man out there in River City! Chasing people away like children from fresh cookies…  I’m all out of comparisons.  I know, I will work on my creative output.  I didn’t think tonight’s cheating schpeel was terrible though!

I do want to apologize again for playing The Beastie Boys right after the final question…  I got your hopes up and then Girls! was like salt in the wound.  At least the drunk guy at the bar liked it!  Tonight I am feeling less than wordy- our boys are in the playoffs!  I am going to stop talking and go watch the game.

For third place tonight, it was a tiebreaker between Team Other Sarah and Last Call, with Other Sarah taking the last money spot.  Here are your final standings:

First Place: Newton’s Minions (not riding as a single tonight – Keith had backup!)

Second Place:  Notch 8

Third Place:  The Other Sarah

Next week’s first category:  Mortuary Science

Oh the good times!  See you then!

Cugini’s Restaurant in Poolesville, MD

Back again at Poolesville for a very tight game of PHT here at Cugini’s!  We had a question tonight that “radiated” a number of wrong responses and an A + B = C question that ate up a lot of one-point wagers.  Our first place team did manage to pull out a come from behind win.  Here are the results:

First Place:  Never Mind

Second Place:  Lightfoot

Third Place:  Five Must Get Beers

Next week’s first category:  Washington Nationals

Orioles Nest in Frederick, MD

Tonight’s game started with a question about Meatloaf, and it was even an audio question this time. The question asked about the song ‘Dead Ringer for Love’, which most teams figured out was a duet by Meatloaf and Cher.  The final question was also music themed, and things got interesting. The question asked about the rap group that was the second rap group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, getting inducted in 2009.  Most teams got the answer, which was Run DMC.  Here’s how the final standings looked tonight:

First Place:  Black Steel

Second Place:  Suck It Trebek

Third Place:  Patriotic Orioles

Next week’s first category: Superman Villains (three-part question)

Until next time,

Tilted Kilt in Frederick, MD

Another four rounds in the books, with scores close enough to keep the game neck and neck throughout. As always, a few wrong answers on some tough questions separated out the field, and we had our winners:

First Place:  Poovey Farms (four wins in a row!)

Second Place:  Hookers and Blackjack

Third Place:  FNQ

Next week’s first category: Elementary Music Methodology (I feel like this involves a recorder in some way…)

See you next week!

Senor Tequila’s in Germantown, MD

Another Tuesday night means another heated game of Pour House Trivia at Senor Tequilas!  After kind of a light week last week, we bounced back with a much more packed house tonight, as several new teams crowded in to battle against the entrenched house regulars.

Highlights of the Night:

In “Please-Tell-Me-It’s-A-Crazy-Dream”: Why in the world is there going to be a Fruit Ninja movie?  WHY?!  At least with Angry Birds there are discernible characters and a plot!  Fruit Ninja is literally just slashing fruit.  That’s the entire game.  No story, no characters, just cutting up fruit.  WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?

*eye starts to twitch*

In “Well-That-Was-Quick”: It’s rare to see a 6-4-2 have a 100% turn-in rate on the 6 point clue.  But that’s what happened tonight; seems like most of my teams are just a little too familiar with the Hallmark Original Movie…Choices.

In “It-Was-The-Lesser-Of-Two-Evils…”: For one hot minute I was planning on whistling the opening to Sweet Georgia Brown as I read the answer, but thought whistling into the mic would be a bad idea so I opted to hum instead.  And I get heckled for it??  Like you wouldn’t have seized the opportunity but come to the same conclusion if you were in my shoes!  Jerks…*cries in the corner*

The final question of the night sealed things up nicely, after a hard fought game.  Here are your final standings:

First Place:  The Fan Club

Second Place:  Axl’s Doghouse

Third Place:  Beer Pressure

Next week’s first category: “The New Girl”  (I haven’t watched much but what I have seen has been pretty darn funny, so enjoy studying)

Great game everyone!  We’ll see you next time!  Until then,

~ Ian

FireFlies in Alexandria, VA

An even night.  A calm night.  A fine night, even.  Chief returned to the stage having missed a week to celebrate his second anniversary at Nationals Park (Go Nats!)

Two new teams were brought into the Pour House fold:  Flo and Team Jayden!  Welcome!  We hope to see you every week in any of our Pour House Trivia establishments, as well as in the end-of-year World Series – where you can win some serious cash, having fun in the process!!

No surprises here, though: Team Milwaukee Brews were strong at the start and strong at the finish. These perennial contenders “eked” out an almost 20 point victory.  It’s high time for other teams to challenge them – I think they’re getting too big in their britches.  Invite your neighbors and smart aleck friends.

Otherwise, though, the omnipresent but occasionally singular Bar Flies managed a respectable third, preceded by silver medal winners No Tears for Beers. (p.s. Tears for Fears was one of my favorite bands from the 80s.  Album? Songs from the Big Chair.)  Team That’s What she Said made it competitive, but ultimately just out of finishing. I fully expect some serious competition from y’all soon.  You’re my darkhorse contenders.

All being said and done, Fruit Ninja kicked some serious ass.  But that’s to be expected.  It’s a ninja, after all.  Here are tonight’s winners!

First Place:  Milwaukee Beers

Second Place:  No Tears for Beers

Third Place:  Barflies

Next week’s first category:  The Beastie Boys

Zepheira Sports Bar in Hagerstown, MD

We had what ended up as an exciting game at Zepheira Sports Bar on Tuesday.  It looked like one team was going to just run away with 1st, but after them having a rough 4th round, 2nd and 3rd place caught up to within 5 and 10 points of first!  The final question would prove to be detrimental to how the top 3 order ended up, and it looked like this… Finishing 3rd was a new team I hope to start seeing on a regular basis, Lowered Expectations!  Making a comeback in hopes of a win but ending in 2nd was Sanford & Son, and hanging on to 1st to continue their current win streak was the Avengers!! They went with “Professional Wrestling” for next weeks winners choice so study up, and join us next Tuesday night for some fun at Zepheira Sports Bar!!

Monkey La La in Frederick, MD

Darn good times go down at Monkey La La trivia night!  Tonight we covered a lot of ground – even traversed some Art History, with no serious casualties.  🙂

Thanks for skipping the Vice Presidential debates tonight everyone and coming out for a little trivia night extravaganza!  Tonight’s set made me hungry with answers like Beef Stroganoff and “Fruit Ninja”.  And how many jokes can La La trivia teams make after a Beef Stroganoff trivia question?  He he I’ll ever tell…

The exit music made my night with a little throwback to my Run-D.M.C. days.  And after all the fun and game-age settled down we gave out some loot to our TOP 3 finishers this evening!

Thanks again for coming out tonight everyone.  I will be out of town next week but you are in good hands with the lovely Mr. Colin Crampton.  He will kick that game off with a question in the category of “PJ Masks”.  Fun Fun…Have a great week everyone.  Lotsa love.  I will see you soon…DG  🙂

PJ Masks Trivia

Quincy’s South in Rockville, MD

Great game tonight at Quincy’s as we saw a huge crowd and a bunch of veteran teams fighting to win this one!  Uncle Jack took it down last week and have looked good all season, we’d see if it would be a repeat performance tonight or if they’d choke like the Orioles did (NOTE: we had a team playing trivia called The Orioles, not referring to them, I mean choke like the REAL Orioles… the trivia team did fine for a first outing)!

Going into the 2nd half, it wasn’t Uncle Jack leading, not even the big teams or the vets.  The leaders were Jeffrey Dahmer’s House of Ribs, a new team for this season who play weekly as a duo!  A strong pair of trivia players, they looked to take down their first win of the season tonight!  If only the 2nd half played to their strengths!

It was unfortunate but House of Ribs ran out of good fortune in Round 3, missing two questions, including their 5-point bonus.  This slip up allowed a new team to sneak into the lead: Uncle Jack.  From there on out, Uncle Jack put on a clinic and were able to hold a 10 point lead going into the final question.  Only one team could catch them, so a worst case scenario had them ending in 2nd place tonight.

Uncle Jack, betting low enough to cover a 12 bet, did get the final correct and locked down the victory!  Two in a row for that squad who look to take the House Championship and make some post-season noise!  Great game!  Here are the final standings:

First Place:  Uncle Jack

Second Place:  Screaming Death Monkey

Third Place:  Car Ramrod

Next week’s first category:  Fictional Addresses
