It’s a Whole New World… of Trivia!
It’s the first weekend in March, and Pour House Trivia once again held trivia games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! The continued support from the Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont has been nothing short of exceptional. That venue has announced a continuation of its “every other Friday” trivia night, and we hope that this venue becomes a permanent addition to the PHT line-up. Let’s see who topped the overall leaderboard:
WEEKEND STATS AND FACTS (51 teams across five venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Boh’s & Hoes (Benders) with 158
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Demented and Sad But Social (Belles’) and Boh’s & Hoes with 158
–> Highest First Half Score: Arrondissements of Ouagadougou (Benders) with 92
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions and final): Demented and Sad But Social
–> Only two teams earned six points on Saturday’s 6-4-2 question, by knowing that the song “For the Love of Money” by the O’ Jays currently serves as the theme song to “The Celebrity Apprentice”.
FRIDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (33.3% success rate):
–> After gaining its independence in 1956, this nation became the largest country in Africa in terms of land area. It held that distinction until 2011, when it became the second-largest nation on the continent. What is this country?
SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (66.7% success rate):
–> Referring to an academic period in one’s life, this word is somewhat of an oxymoron, coming from Greek words meaning both “wise” and “foolish”. For your wager, name the word.
SUNDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (75.0% success rate):
–> To capture the movement of this title character’s clothing, animator Glen Keane looked at videos of rap star M.C. Hammer, essentially modeling the character’s movement after the music star. Who is this Disney character? (you’ll find the answers later in this blog)
Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont, MD
On Friday night, 21 teams of fervent wine connoisseurs and trivia aficionados descended upon Springfield Manor Winery and stuck through it to the end. The number of bottles consumed defies belief. What doesn’t defy belief is that many teams ended up living up to their names. Perhaps it is a case of self-fulfilling prophecy?
Nonetheless, through nearly three hours of grueling competition, three teams surfaced to the top — not without help from the final category — and it definitely made a difference on the leaderboard. With a correct response of South Sudan, here are tonight’s top three finishers:
First Place: Witless Wonders
Second Place: Winos
Third Place: BFD
It has been a sincere pleasure to host my now fourth Friday here at Springfield Manor Winery. I’ll re-join you in two weeks (March 17): same place, same time.

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD
Back again here at Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick for some Saturday night Pour House Trivia action! Our first category pick for tonight pitted the Baltimore Orioles against the Boston Red Sox, which could be a source of elation or frustration depending upon which team you root for. The first round also contained Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis and a Britain-inspired game show premiering in the early 21st century. Round two featured our “mitten-shaped” U.S. state, a little arithmetic, and this southern sport:
Round three included questions on some sports nicknames, a global annual event, and Tim Curry featured with the Muppets in a retell of a classic adventure:
The final round of the night featured a dance number from a critically acclaimed film of the 1980s, a famous bridge, and the solution (literally) to replace your follicles if you’re tearing your hair out answering trivia questions. We also talked about a character who (temporarily) became the fifth member of this animated quartet:
Great game! Here are the results:
First Place: Demented and Sad But Social
Second Place: Uncle Jack
Third Place: Taco Cat

Pretzel and Pizza Creations in Hagerstown, MD
Things got pretty exciting to watch unfold at Pretzel & Pizza Creations on Saturday evening! The turnouts are getting better all the time and each week it could be ANYONE’S game to win! (I think we have had a different team take 1st for three weeks in a row now!) Once we got to the final question, there was a little change up of the top three teams.
About half of our teams were able to come up with the correct response of ‘sophomoric’ on the final question, and that provided a bit of a shake-up. Moving from 5th to 3rd after the final was Gimpin’ Ain’t Easy! Holding onto 2nd place was Give Us Your Beer Money, and stepping into the 1st place spotlight was the Off Beats!! They decided on having an AUDIO winners choice category of College Fight Songs, so study up, and I’ll see you next Saturday at Pretzel & Pizza Creations!

Captain Benders Tavern in Sharpsburg, MD
We were back at it for Sunday Funday at Captain Benders in Sharpsburg tonight for a little Pour House Trivia madness. We started off our game as usual with our Winner’s Choice category from Campbell, “Finding Bigfoot”. Little did we know he’d be wearing the answer… we finished Round 1 with another category right up his team’s (Boh’s & Hoes) alley, Sports Stadiums a la University of Phoenix of daytime TV fame…
To kick off Round 2 we had our regular audio category, this time testing your knowledge of Billboard hits (in March, over the course of 20 years… in case you thought we were going easy on you.) Round 2 ended with some War Stuff, throwing it back to Cuba during the Spanish American War. The Halftime Puzzle Pages brought a little foreign exoticism to our film-focused top half, and on the bottom half, we tested you on why size *really does* matter (when it comes to geography anyway.)
To start the second half, Round 3 began with another Sports-related question, this time focusing on headlines, and wrapped with 20th Century news a la “All the President’s Men.” For the 6-4-2 we gave you a little celeb trivia about Bad Santa himself, Billy Bob Thornton. And at last, our final round of regular questions began by testing both your local AND international geography smarts, and wrapped with some international currency to boot.
Our final question category, you ask? A little Disney Character Hodge Podge for the win… because who doesn’t love MC Hammer/Aladdin pants, am I right? So who came out on top?
First Place: Boh’s & Hoes
Second Place: Arrondissments of Ouagadougou
Third Place: Fisted Sister
Campbell from Boh’s & Hoes picked the category (yet again) for next week, and this time it’ll be the blacksmithing game show “Forged in Fire”!
See you next Sunday! XX Torie
The Beacon in Frederick, MD
We had a nice game go down on Sunday at The Beacon in Frederick. The competition was tough tonight, so I was excited to see who was going to take first place! To my surprise it went to a visiting team that just stopped in for their first time here! Finishing in third place was Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap, second place went to the Witiots, and stopping in for the first time and taking 1st place was W! They picked the show “Friends” for next week’s opening category, so study up and join us for a game on Sunday at The Beacon!
