Happy Father’s Day!
With the Summer Fling Season underway, we finished off the first week by hosting five games of weekend trivia spread across all three nights, culminating in a great Sunday night game on Father’s Day. But which teams topped them all?
WEEKEND STATS AND FACTS (56 teams across five venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Smarty Pants (Belles’) with 166
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap (Springfield Manor) and Smarty Pants with 154
–> Highest First Half Score: Turd Ferguson (Tilted Kilt) with 89
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions and final): NONE
–> Overall, our three halftime pages played to an average of 14.8, with six teams scoring a perfect 20 points.
FRIDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (42.5% success rate):
–> If you were to write the common English name of every nation in ALL lowercase letters, what would be the only one nation that will contain three “dotted” characters in a row?
SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (33.3% success rate):
–> Which cartoon character was introduced in a 1935 short entitled “I Haven’t Got a Hat”, in which he appeared alongside a cat name Beans?
SUNDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (0.0% success rate):
–> During the 1950s, this man earned five nominations for Best Lead Actor, more than any man in one decade. For your wager, name this actor. (you’ll find the answers later in this blog)
For the second time in three games, the weather attempted to ruin a great night of trivia. However, Mother Nature hit too early and we were able to scamper inside the Springfield Manor Winery, so 12 teams could duke it out in classic trivia warfare. The first round was none too tough for the average wine enthusiast as four teams were tied with 32 points after Round 1, and eight teams total held a score of 29 or above. In fact, the first half was none too bad with the exception of the final question of the first half. In the category of Three Clues / One U.S. State, the first two clues threw off our teams:
- This was the home state of “M*A*S*H” character “Hawkeye” Pierce – several teams jumped the gun, putting Iowa based on it being the Hawkeye State.
- Its city of Eastport is considered to be the first place in the contiguous United States to receive the rays of the morning sun – several teams put Rhode Island & Massachusetts.
At the end of the first half, we had four teams at 80 points or above:
- First Place: Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap – 83 points
- Tied for Second Place: Poovey Farms & Hail Mary – 82 points
- Fourth Place: DJ2 – 80 points
Round 3 was fairly tough with the final question in the round being particularly difficult. In the category of U.S. Presidents, we asked about the man who was responsible for leading U.S. forces at the Battle of Tippecanoe, about 30 years before his very short term as U.S. President. The common answer was John Tyler, but the correct answer was William Henry Harrison!
The final was challenging, but approximately 60% of our teams answered correctly with Fiji. The real story was the wagering, where conservative betting affected two out of the top four teams! Poovey Farms won the game after coming back from second place to just beat out Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap. DJ2 came from fourth place to take third, after just eeking out Hail Mary.
THE NEXT GAME WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 30!
Next game’s first category: Maryland Microbrews
We had our busiest night yet here at Vanish Brewery in Leesburg, with lots of new teams jumping into our game to get their first taste of Pour House Trivia! All told, 15 teams took a stab at tonight’s prizes, so let’s run down the highlights:
With so many teams in the field we didn’t have a lot of time for chit chat and had to keep things rolling. But clearly, we hosted a cultured lot because it wasn’t the art question that was most missed tonight, but the question on MLB Stadiums. Unfortunately, that cultural literacy didn’t necessarily translate to “Saturday Night Live” knowledge, as we had one of the widest ranges of puzzle page scores I think I’ve ever seen, everywhere from eight to 20. Congrats to Ghost Fleet Killas and We R Out for a perfect picture round.
And the disgruntled players who picked “After Harry Potter” for their bonus category, what were you expecting? It was never gonna be about “Harry Potter”. Come on now! After a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at the end of the first half, We R Out rode that wave of confidence straight through the final two rounds. With a one point lead over Momentary Lapse of Reason, they nailed the final question and took the top prize tonight. Congratulations to We R Out, but also to Trivia Newton John and Five Sure, both of whom also placed in the top three!
Great game everyone, it was a close one from start to finish! When we reconvene on July 7th, we’ll kick things off with a question in the category of North American Bird Species question! Sorry, this guy doesn’t count…
Study up and we’ll see you next time!
We had a crazy, final question flip flop to finish off our first game of the Summer Fling on Saturday at Pretzel & Pizza Creations in Hagerstown! The teams that made it out tonight were playing tough, and it seemed like if there was one question that only two or teams answered correctly, the very night question would have two or three DIFFERENT teams answer correctly! For the most part, the scores never got too far out of reach within the top five places.
Sanford and Son jumped out to an early lead, scoring 85 points after the first half. Despite a stellar second half, they were only able to increase their lead by just one point, so we headed into the final question with the Off Beats just six points behind. I thought it was a great final question in the category of cartoon characters, however only two teams answered correctly with Porky Pig, and that switched up the top three teams more than at any other point in the game!
After the scores were re-tallied, the top three teams looked like this… Unfortunately dropping down to third place we had the Off Beats! Making the biggest move of the night to go from FIFTH place to second place in one question was The Leprechauns!! Our winning team tonight usually starts out well in the first half, but then will have either a bad third or fourth round to keep them out of contention. Tonight, they took that small lead after the first round and never lost that lead for the rest off the game! Our winners for the first week of the Fling here was Sanford & Son!
Next week’s first category will be “House of Cards”, so study up, I’ll see everyone next Saturday!

There was no trivia this week at Captain Benders. Torie returns on June 25th!
We hosted the first game of the Summer Fling on Sunday at the Tilted Kilt, and our winner tonight could NOT be stopped! We had one team that had a perfect game going through the first half, only missing one possible point by scoring a 19 out of 20 on the puzzle page. Somehow they pulled every two-point bonus question no matter how obscure it seemed! Unfortunately the magic ended in the second half when they missed a third round question in reference to the Lost Boys of Sudan.
While maintaining a healthy lead, our front-runners chose MLB Teams as their bonus category the final round, but could not come up with the correct answer when asked which American League lost each of its only two World Series appearances, in 2010 and 2011. How quickly we forget about the Texas Rangers… Despite missing a potential eight points, the points they amassed leading to the final question was enough to guarantee a victory!
With none of our teams able to give me the correct final answer of Marlon Brando, here is how our teams finished on Sunday night: in third place was Team Loki, while playing a good game for second place was The Trivia Knight, and playing a nearly perfect game for the first victory of the Summer Fling was Turd Ferguson!!
Our winners selected The Beatles for next week’s first category, so study up and I’ll see everyone on Sunday at the Tilted Kilt!
