Feed Me Some Great Wednesday Night Trivia!

Just because this week didn’t count in our official standings, that didn’t mean that teams wanted to take Wednesday night off.  We crammed nearly 100 teams into our Wednesday night venues, including 17 teams at Memories!  You folks must really love Nick!  We had several teams firing on all cylinders, including these teams that topped the field with some stellar scores:

WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (94 teams across 13 venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: We Need a Do Over (Woodside) with 172

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Momentary Lapse of Reason (Bennigan’s – Frederick) with 166

–> Highest First Half Score: Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap (Valley Grill) with 94

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): We Need a Do Over, Momentary Lapse of Reason, Satan’s School for Girls (Memories), Sexual Chocolate (Memories)

–> Our TV sitcoms halftime page scored right along the normal lines, with an average of 17.2.  About 10% of our teams scored a perfect 20.

–> No team was able to score six points on the 6-4-2, by realizing that The Monkees actually released four #1 albums in the span of 13 months.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (61.3% success rate):

–> On writing this 1960 film, Charles B. Griffith was supposedly inspired by a 1932 story called “Green Thoughts”, though other sources say he may have been influenced by the Arthur C. Clarke short story “The Reluctant Orchid”. Name this film which was adapted into a stage musical in 1982.  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Whole Foods Market in Vienna, VA

What a beautiful night to hold a game of trivia!  It was a fun game too (You guys get crazy sometimes….In a good way!).  Our game was very close and came down to the final question but Shiggles took first after a very well played game!  We will be back in four weeks on February 22.  Here are your top three teams. First Place:  Shiggles Second Place:  Movin’ On Up Third Place:  No Reservations Next game’s first category: Warren Zevon ~ Zach Warren Zevon Trivia

Valley Grill in Middletown, MD

Some pre-season madness here at Valley Grill Sports Bar in Middletown as these folks are warming up for the big Hagerstown clash known as The World Series of Trivia!  The first half of the game had a number of key moments, including cloning, video game audio, William Shakespeare, a slight against the New England Patriots, and a great band pictured below! VG3 We did some sketch comedy for the half time puzzle, and then dove into a second half featuring The Beetles! (lifeform) as well as The Monkees! (band), Rush Limbaugh, and a visual hint for the final category for your amusement… VG1   Remember Season XV starts next week, and best of luck at the World Series this Sunday. Here are tonight’s results: First Place:  Fat Kid are Hard to Kidnap Second Place:  Stupid Sexy Flanders Third Place:  Fast Forward Not Available Next week’s first category: “The Lord of the Rings” (novels) ~ Ronnie VG1 VG2

The Tavern in Olney, MD

Our Wednesday game at The Tavern sure had some great up and down moments for almost every team! It might have been just a warm up before the new season, but they were competing like it was a deciding game of the World Series! Once we reached the final and the answers were all turned in, we still had one last flip flop in the top 3, and this is how it ended… Unfortunately dropping to 3rd was Olney the Lonely, moving up to 2nd was Drink Until We’re Cute, and starting in a hole after round 1 to clawing their way back the rest of the game then moving into 1st with the final question was the Mary Tyler Moore Fan Club!! Their pick for the first winners choice of season 15 is the T.V. show “Timber Creek Lodge”, GOOD LUCK to all my teams in the World Series this Sunday, and I’ll see you back at The Tavern next Wednesday!!

~   Jon J

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD

Good lord, I love my Wednesday night crew…  I got to see some huge smiles tonight, a surplus of artistic ability, and not a few scrambles for points!  Not bad, though we only had one set of jazz hands, and that was from a traveling team so they didn’t know our rules…  Hopefully they will be back next week for another shot at greatness! Was a fun final question tonight… “Feed me Seymour!” At the top of the food chain it was Doctor Horrible Presents: Damn you Hugh Jackman!  Second place went to Tokyo Sex Whale, and in third place, it was We Rode Scholars, as a duo!  Well done, what a nice warm up to the World Series this weekend!  Very Exciting!  I will see many of you this weekend, and the rest of you it will be next Wednesday night with a first category of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along.  See you then, good luck this weekend! Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD

During our pre-season week for Season XV, we still had some hot competition-wise for our game of Pour House Trivia this evening!  And one team put on an impressive display! Highlights of the Night: In “You’re-Killing-My-Buzz”: Nothing gives me more joy during hosting, then seeing my parents, whose team consists of a majority of actual Geographers, missing Geography questions. Unfortunately tonight, I must report that they managed to bat 1000 on the Geography questions tonight. How am I supposed to enjoy my night when y’all are getting them right?! In “Over-Thought-Question-of-the-Night”: We had an unfortunate number of teams tonight go with Mitosis instead of Cloning. I can understand why you guys went there but sadly that didn’t fit the Greek for “twig” part. Sometimes you gotta go with that first instinct guys! In “Final-Question-of-Horrors”: Tonight’s final was a trickier one it seems, teams not picking up on the plant themed clues. How would that affect the final? In third place tonight, Quiz On My Face! In second place tonight, Simple Minds! In first place tonight, Momentary Lapse of Reason! Great game tonight everyone! Next week we will kick off Season XV of Pour House Trivia with a Neil Young question; study up, good luck to my World Series bound teams, and we will see you next time! Until then, ~ Ian Neil Young Trivia

Woodside Deli in Germantown, MD

Once again, three new teams welcomed to the Pour House Trivia fold!  Woodside Deli is turning out to be a force-multiplier (forgive me, I’m retired military) for active DMV trivia players! The beautiful, unseasonable weather preceding tonight’s game perhaps drove even more of us to get. out. of. the house.  It was wonderful!  No real hiccups in the game, and even my notoriously-bad math was on point. 🙂 Poor Fellowship, though: they held a steady top-three place until the final question.  I felt bad!  Next time, Fellowship – consider strategic last-question betting.  Those 12 points frequently end up being real game-changers (excuse the pun).  Here’s this week’s finishers: Next week’s first category: “Dardevil” (TV series) First Place:  We Need a Do Over Second Place:  Front of the Class (Good Luck at the World Series this weekend!) Third Place:  JFKFC As always, Fair Winds and Following Seas, ~ Chief Daredevil TV Trivia

Nido’s Ristorante in Frederick, MD

Tonight we had our pre-season game for Season XV, and it was just full of surprises.  We had a question that basically covered my entire childhood, and we even had a team do the wave in the middle of the game!  That’s definitely a new one!  We kicked things off with a question about the “Weekly World News”, which ended up being pretty hilarious.  We gave three real headlines about George W. Bush from WWN and one fake one that we made up, and we asked teams to identify which one was the fake one.  Turns out the one we made up was that he planned on selling his twin daughters to Kim Jong-Il to avoid a nuclear war (sounds real, doesn’t it?).  The real headlines were that he had a love affair with Janet Reno, that he tried to hire Yoda as Secretary of Defense, and that he was receiving advice on the Iraq War from the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. The audio question was pretty much about my childhood; the question was all about video games.  We played clips from “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “The Legend of Zelda (Ocarina of Time)”, and “Donkey Kong Country”.  Teams definitely had a bit of trouble with it though.  Halftime asked teams to identify different sketch comedy TV shows based on the image, as well as matching athletes to their Super Bowl superlatives.  The science question in the final round caused a bit of a stir, as we learned that ectoplasm isn’t just a Ghostbusters related thing. The final question of the night was about film inspirations, and I really thought it was a good one. Teams did pretty well on it, and things didn’t change too much in the final standings. Third place tonight went to Winners Buy Beers, second went to Pop Vultures, and the win tonight went to Incognido’s, congrats!  Next week, we start out with a question about Children’s Literature, so study up!  I’ll see you all then!  Also, good luck to anyone going to the World Series this weekend, I’ll be there scoring and cheering you on! Until next time, ~ Chad Children's Lit Trivia

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD

It was a great night of trivia as we all prepare for the big game on Sunday afternoon!  A good chunk of teams joining us tonight including Sanchezes, We’ll Try Harder, Strangers have the Best Candy.  We saw Just the Tip coming off a strong weekend performance at the playoffs.  We also saw Don’t Call Me Shirley, last week’s winners, and Roaming Gnomes.  That was just the regular teams.  We saw a few new teams join us as well for what would be a good night to play some trivia! As we began, it was the Shirley show, crushing the field and leading by a strong margin at the half.  Okay, maybe they only led by one point, maybe five points, I don’t remember, but Roaming Gnomes was putting up some great numbers too!  It was really anyone’s game!  Shirley held the lead going through the 3rd round, hoping to not blow it tonight.  Don’t Call Me Shirley is notorious for building a strong lead and then…. well, yeah. So we start round 4, just six questions away from a Shirley victory tonight.  Well, this is where we had problems. A science/supernatural question slipped up a lot of teams, including Shirley who bet big and missed!  This gave Roaming Gnomes a chance to move into the lead.  The final question of round 4 had a two-point bonus on it that Roaming Gnomes picked up, Shirley missed it, and RG moved into the lead by a single point!  It was hella close… The final question tonight played about 2/3 correct, Shirley would need a miracle miss from RG to get back the lead they’d lost after the 5th Q in Round 4… And they did not get it.  Roaming Gnomes takes down a win after a massive comeback in the 4th! Shirley would settle for 2nd place with 3rd going to Downtown Dinky Town! Good luck on Sunday guys!  See ya next week! Next week’s first category: “Smokey and the Bandit” Smokey and the Bandit Trivia

Memories in Mount Airy, MD

We had quite a packed house this week, with 17 teams all vying for first place… and the zero season points available this week.  And while the points didn’t matter, the teams certainly played like it was World Series (which is Sunday, btw).  It was crazy. Teams were making up countries, we got some of the biggest reactions for the smallest victories imaginable… I know this game didn’t *really* count, but it felt like primetime trivia! And then we got to the final, and then a tiebreaker, and then a SECOND tiebreaker before we had our winners. What a crazy end to Season XIV!! First Place:  Satan’s School for Girls (WWDTM in disguise!) Second Place:  Sexual Chocolate Third Place: Dum Dums Satan’s School for Girls kept with their new theme, and selected, “Literary References to Satan” as next week’s first category. Good luck studying, and I’ll see you next week! ~ Nick Satan Trivia

Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, MD

Tonight at the Furnace in Thurmont, we had a close game that came down to the last question! Team Wolfpack decided to use the strategy of wagering zero in hopes that the Indoor Cats would miss the final question!  But alas, the leading team was able to come up with the correct answer of “Little Shop of Horrors”, sealing their victory for tonight’s game.  In second place, we had Team Wolfpack, and in third place was Peg Rod! Next week’s first category: “Gone With the Wind” Until next time, ~ Devan

Gone With the Wind Trivia

Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD

It’s picking up at Bernies!  Four new teams made their debut appearances tonight.  Welcome to Mountainers, Go Rangers, Coap, and Jon.  The freshmen class learned how tough the upperclassmen were tonight, when Does He Look Like a Biff (soon to be renamed Would You Turn Down The House Music Danielle?) and Taint Too Proud To Beg (soon to be Pen Island) kept it a high stakes game until the end. Taint held first going into the doozy of a final, but it all switched up when Biff was the only team to get the correct answer to take first place.  Taint dropped to second, while John came in third.  Unfortunately, John was just passing through and doesn’t expect to be back anytime. So long John, safe journey, and may you always know the right answer! Next week’s winners choice will be in the vague category of Alternative Facts. Good luck and see you for the first night of the new season. ~ Sean Conway

Applebee’s in Waynesboro, PA

Having this week off from ‘official’ standings didn’t stop teams from bringing their ‘A’ games to Applebee’s in Waynesboro, as this one was competitive right down to the very end.  This week’s top three represented two of our World Series teams, with We Are Groot narrowly escaping with a one point victory over Not Your Team.  Here were your top three: First Place:  We Are Groot Second Place:  Not Your Team Third Place:  Wingin It’ Thank you all for coming out, and good luck to our World Series teams! Next week’s first category: The Strumbellas ~ Kyle

Clover Theater in Cloverdale, CA

And thus ends our first season at Clover Theater!  Mark’s Angels, who placed out of the top three only once, wrapped up their season title.  They won a $50 gift card and an almost life-size statue of R2D2. Clover Theater Trivia As for the action last night, the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyers led through Round 3 but a few missteps in the fourth round allowed the Sparklers to overtake them.  The Sparklers correctly answered the final question and sewed up their first victory.  Here are the top three teams: First Place:  Sparklers Second Place (tie):  Mark’s Angels and Southern Comfort Our new season begins next week, with an opening category of Gregorian Chants ~ Ryan Gregorian
