Down the Stretch They Come for Monday Night Trivia!
With America celebrating one of its most revered holidays, it was a somewhat light night of Pour House Trivia. But even with just four venues holding game on Monday, there were some rather impressive scores as our loyal teams gear up for the Season XV Playoffs. Check out the recaps:
MONDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (28 teams across four venues):
Highest Overall Score: Uncle Jack (DRP) and The Jeff King Experience (Il Forno) with 168
Highest Score After Round 4: Uncle Jack with 159
Highest First-Half Score: The Jeff King Experience with 89
Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions): Uncle Jack
–> Monday’s halftime page featured Oscar winners for Best Picture, as well some geographic 50/50s. The average score was 15.9, with two teams (The Jeff King Experience and Worst Cast Ontario) scoring a perfect 20 points.
–> Only one team earned six points on our 6-4-2 question, as Uncle Jack recognized the source material for the film “Die Hard”.
MONDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (50.0% success rate):
–> A horse named Hard Tack was the sire of which champion racehorse? (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

DRP in Alexandria, VA
Tonight started with Bryce Harper throwing his helmet and getting into an all-out brawl on the field. In the relative confines of DRP, teams threw down the gauntlet for an all-out trivia brawl instead. Specifically, DRD and HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff, who were the two contenders for that free pass to World Series. DRD had to beat HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff to secure that ticket, so it was all to play for. However, they only had one player tonight, so they were at a significant disadvantage. How did it play out for them?
Round 1 started off with everyone knowing King Edward abdicated his throne to marry Wallis Simpson, but few knew the actual regnal number as well. Then, teams had to figure out some words in English that meant something else in another language, though spelled the same. A few teams accidentally wrote down the plural of “child” to get Die Kinder in German rather than the singular Das Kind. Round 2 was a “cold” round as teams knew the answers to questions about penguins and “Refrigerator” Perry.
Round 3 featured a question on K2, but some teams could not quite locate the Karakorams, putting it in line with the Himalayas rather than further west. Another question on the Heiligenstadt Testament about Beethoven’s hearing loss, led one team to think the infliction was syphilis by answering Robert Schumann. Round 4 included a question on diabetes that led to everyone betting (and earning) seven points. And some teams were left in a quandary when they could not spell “quandary” as the answer to our question.
Tonight’s final question was on sporting genealogy, specifically the thoroughbred offspring of a horse called “Hard Tack”. Most teams were able to pick up on the pun and correctly identified “Seabiscuit” as the answer. So, how did our medal table look tonight?
First Place: Uncle Jack
Second Place: Worst-Case Ontario
Third Place: B-58s
That also means that our House Champion is HR Puff ‘n’ Stuff! Congratulations to them for a well-deserved win!
Next week’s first category: The TV Series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
Until next time,

Uno Pizzeria in Frederick, MD
Tonight, with a noticeable team absence, the Uno Pizzeria Pour House Trivia House Championship was set to be decided, and it was not a given by any means; it was a fight from start to finish!
Highlights of the Night:
In “Off-to-a-Bad-Start”: Our winner’s choice category tonight was a doozy; I don’t know that anyone in here is familiar with the list of six simple machines, myself included. I feel like they’re wedge, pulley, lever…and that’s all I got xD It was a tough way to kick off such an important game!
In “Learn-Something-New-Every-Day”: I had no idea that Die Hard was based on a 1970s novel! That’s a tough six-point clue and it showed, with teams giving me all kinds of exasperated looks. I don’t blame them! I dunno who this Thorp guy is, but clearly I need to try out these books!
In “Gotta-Keep-Em-Guessing”: So, quandry is an accepted misspelling of quandary, even in major dictionaries. So of course I accept it as correct when teams turn in their answer before hearing the crossword clue. Thus affording me the pleasure of watching them have a one minute panic attack trying to figure out how they could be wrong. As I’ve said before, I’m a bit insane.
The final question tonight sealed the deal for our house championship!
In third place tonight, a new squad, Team 619!
In second place tonight, Firebreathing Rubber Duckies!
In first place tonight, sealing their House Championship, Tequila Mockingbird!
Great game tonight guys, and a hearty congratulations to Tequila Mockingbird! They fought hard all season against a strong competitor and managed to come out on top. Well done! Next week we’ll kick things off with a question on the classic TV series “I Love Lucy“. Study up and we’ll see you next time!
Until then,
~ Ian

Il Forno in Frederick, MD
Tonight I had the privilege of running the game from the scoresheet only as we had Skye take over the microphone as your reader tonight! Thanks to everyone for moving the game along and not giving us too much of a hard time. I was a bit worried that we wouldn’t finish in time, what with Skye’s first time on the microphone, but we actually finished at the same time that we normally would! Skye did a fine job and I appreciate everyone letting us host for you!
With that, let’s dive right into the game. We announced our House Champion tonight, The Jeff King Experience, and they were here to show why they won that title. A very strong first half kept them in the lead going into Round 3. We had a lot of teams that were very close to our leaders, with Balls of Fire and Austin La Vista both on their tails! A 3rd round would favor the Jeff King XP but Round 4 had a different motivation…
Taking a shot for a two-point bonus on the Word Origins question cost Jeff King their one-point wager so they didn’t have it available when the Liquor question came up. About half of the teams getting Sailor Jerry for their wager but The Jeff King Experience missed it for five points! Losing five points in this close of a game was HUGE! Balls of Fire picked up points on that question and snuck into the lead with the addition of a two-point bonus on the Rock Bands bonus.
Balls of Fire was winning going into the final question, only a single correct answer away from usurping a win from Jeff King. A simple final tonight “Hard Tack was the sire of what championship horse?” … A simple final in wording but not so simple to come up with the answer. About half of the teams able to guess right here, associating Hard Tack (a hard, salty biscuit-like food from the 19th century) with that of another food-named horse: Seabiscuit. The two terms are nearly interchangeable as Seabiscuit is actually a kind of Hard Tack! That was the connection and our winners tonight were a team that made the connection…
Balls of Fire was the last team to hand in their response, coming up late with an answer of Secretariat therefore giving way to a team to take the lead from them! Jeff King took advantage, getting the final and moving into the lead! Good game! This team is gonna be dangerous come next Sunday! Second place goes to Austin La Vista and third place to Dukes of Knowledge, both with gets on the final! We’re back in one week, thanks guys and good luck in this weekend’s post-season!
