Baby I Hear the Blues A-Callin’… for Wednesday Night Trivia!

We’re another week closer to World Series XIV, and after five weeks of the season, a few teams have certainly established themselves as potential World Series Champions!  We had one team with a perfect season on the line tonight.  Would they be able to hold those winning streaks?  Let’s get to the nightly rundown:

WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (62 teams across eight venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Fat Kids Are Hard to Kidnap (Valley Grill) and Roaming Gnomes (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg) with 168

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Roaming Gnomes (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg) with 163

–> Highest First Half Score: Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! (Memories) with 94

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): For the first time in several weeks, there were NO TEAMS that managed to correctly answer all 21 wagering questions.  There were numerous teams who started 19-for-19, but were tripped up on the last question in Round 4:

– Among the 23 U.S. states that have ocean coastline, which state has the shortest coastline at just 13 miles?

–> The Olympic-themed halftime page proved to be a bit difficult for most teams, yielding an average of 16.1, and allowing only five perfect scores.

–> Only TWO teams (Team Awesome at Memories and Roaming Gnomes at Bennigan’s – Clarksburg) scored a very elusive six points on the 6-4-2 tonight, by knowing that the sources of both the Rhine and the Rhone rivers are found in Switzerland.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (26.8% success rate):

–> At this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, an HBO drama surpassed a sitcom of the late 1990s and early 2000s, to become the most Emmy-awarded scripted series of all-time among shows that air in primetime.  What are these two shows?  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Valley Grill in Middletown, MD

As always, another great game of Pour House Trivia here at Valley Grill in Middletown!  A canine revision moved the scores just enough to really make this game competitive for a number of teams,  though the 4th round proved to be daunting for a couple of those same teams in the end. Here are the results:

First Place:  Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap

Second Place:  Shake Weight

Third Place:  Southpaw Fish

The Tavern in Olney, MD

There was a lot of up and down movement between teams in the top 3 spots at The Tavern on Wednesday. Almost every round had a different order for 1st, 2nd and 3rd so when the final question was answered, it wasn’t too surprising that we needed to use a tie breaker question to decide how the order would officially end! Unfortunately losing the tie breaker and taking 3rd was Shart Attack, winning the 2nd place spot was Moving Forward, and taking 1st for a second week in a row was the Wild Bill Cody Fan Club! They picked “Audrey Hepburn Films” for next weeks winners choice, so study up and come join us for a good time next Wednesday night at The Tavern!!

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD

An educated guess can save your asses!  Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick had some good Hail Mary’s and teams were really scratching their heads and holding their breath for a few of them.  Or just skating through the night and hoping it’s enough to push you in to the top three.  You know, whatever works for you.  It’s all about that beer…

The final was a kicker tonight, with most teams knowing “Game of Thrones”, but absolutely NO ONE was able to come up with “Frasier”!  It’s a good show!  Lots of groans on that miss…  Not much movement in the top 3, Halfway to a threesome took 3rd tonight, with Periodic Table Dancers pulling 2nd even when they were the only team to not know there was a dog in Peter Pan! 1st went to those hard to beat Tokyo Sex Whales! Next week we start out with a  NON audio question on the film “Space Jam”.  What, no fans of R. Kelly?  Going to be a good one…

Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD

It seems like every week things just get crazier and crazier here at Bennigan’s; our games of Pour House Trivia are never predictable and always a good time!

Highlights of the Night:

In “We-Really-Need-A-Superhero-Refresher”: The number of teams who would consider Catwoman to be Batman’s sidekick, is alarmingly high.  Especially when some of those teams even put Julie Newmar down as Catwoman.  Come on guys!

In “Who-Let-The-Dogs-Out”: As soon as I read the Peter Pan question I knew I had to buzz the mothership, because the first image of Nana in my head was the big English Sheepdog from “Hook”.  Good to know I wasn’t crazy on that one; thanks for bearing with me as we got it sorted out guys!

In “Fourth-Quarter-Race-to-the-Finish”: It isn’t often that the final round lets the gap close so much between the teams, but what started as a near runaway came down to the wire by the end of the round. Nailbiters are always the best!

When all was said and done, the final was crucial, and we had a last second podium swap!

In third place tonight, after stumbling early but making a comeback, Many Bothans!

In second place tonight, battling hard all night, Momentary Lapse of Reason!

In first place tonight, charging at the end and pushing into the top at the end, the Bumbleslayers!

Great game everyone! Next week we’ll kick things off with an Aqua Team Hunger Force question. If you’re not familiar, look it up. It’s…certainly something! Study up, and we’ll see you next time!

Until then,

~ Ian

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD

We come again to Bennigan’s in Clarksburg for a continuation of Season XIV!  Lots of teams joining us tonight looking to keep Roaming Gnomes from repeating after a dominant performance last week!  Most of the teams had a full seven (or nearly); Strangers have the Best Candy looking to upset as a duo tonight.  Let’s see how it went!

Looking to win another game, Roaming Gnomes led at the half.  Round 3 began with a Travel Q that slipped a couple of the teams up.  The “Cruise Capital of the World” is a nickname for the city of Miami though we saw lots of different Florida cities on that one.  That question did a lot to solidify the leaders.  Roaming Gnomes picking up points there and holding onto the lead all through the second half!  A very strong game for them.

Going into the final, Roaming Gnomes led the second place team by eight points.  Seemingly, they were finishing #1 or #2 tonight with a correct answer.  The final was a doozy tonight; only one team picking up a correct response. Defensive bets would be beneficial here! Roaming Gnomes were the ONLY team to pick up the final, so they finish in 1st place tonight!  Grats guys!  And with a good bet, 2nd place goes to Strangers have the Best Candy who, as a duo, bested a large field of competitors! Great finish for them! 3rd to Don’t Call Me Shirley! We’re back in a week with more Season XIV action! Until then guys 😉

First Place:  Roaming Gnomes

Second Place:  Strangers Have the Best Candy

Third Place:  Don’t Call Me Shirley

Memories in Mount Airy, MD

This week’s game of trivia saw some stiff competition, strategic betting, and a total stumper of a final!  Along the way, we really put teams to the test in the later rounds, creating even more drama headed to the finish.  In the end, it was Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! breaking Sexual Chocolate’s streak, and takes down the win with a strategic 0 bet on the final. They’ve selected, “Animal House” as next week’s first category, so grab a beer and do some “research” this weekend!  Here are the final standings:

First Place:  Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!

Second Place:  Sexual Chocolate

Third Place:  Awesome

Next week’s first category:  “Animal House”

See you next week!

Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD

By halftime, Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown had a clear leader in Taint Too Proud To Beg.  After three teams shared the high score of 19 on the halftime round, we had Does He Look Like A Biff? and Quiz In My Pants were tied for second.  But it all fell apart in Miami, not Fort Lauderdale, as the answer to a crucial question in the third round.  In the end, Quiz came in third, Biff wagered just one point to stay in second place, and the Taints held on to first with a strategic wager of five points.

First Place:  Taint Too Proud to Beg

Second Place:  Does He Look Like a Biff?

Third Place:  Quiz in My Pants
