Are you the Very Model of a Modern Trivia Player?

It’s only four more days until Christmas, and some of regular teams got an early present with a surprise trivia night victory!  An interesting final question flipped the standings at several of our venues, leading to a great finish.  Let’s take a look at the teams that weren’t fazed by tonight’s set:

TUESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (76 teams across 11 venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Hookers & Blackjack (Tilted Kilt) and Uncle Jack (Quincy’s South) with 169

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Milwaukee Beers (FireFlies) with 162

–> Highest First Half Score: Milwaukee Beers (FireFlies) and Screaming Death Monkey (Quincy’s South) with 92

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Never Mind (Cugini’s), Black Steel (O’s Nest), Suck It Trebek (O’s Nest), Hookers & Blackjack (Tilted Kilt), Car Ramrod (Quincy’s South)

–> The halftime page played on the easier side tonight, scoring an average of 18.6, with about 35% of our teams scoring 20 points.

–> The 6-4-2 question was rather difficult, as only three teams (Milwaukee Beers, Green Machine, and Sofa King Smart) earned six points by knowing the northernmost city to have ever hosted a college bowl game is Seattle.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (54.1% success rate):

–>  As the equivalent of the Greek god Cronus, which Roman God was honored by a December festival that served as a predecessor to Christmas?  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Capitol City Brewing in Arlington, VA

Sorry again that this is so late.  Morning flight + vomiting baby all day, etc…. I will get better about doing these the night before they’re due, if necessary.

Cap City was hoppin’ Tuesday night!  We had eleven challengers striving to unseat our three-peat returning champions, the Capitol City Goofballs, including two powerhouse teams that were back from hiatus – God Complex Particles and the Capital Hillbillies.  After the halftime page, it looked like the Goofballs were on track for a fourth consecutive win, leading the rest by a modest margin.  But one question in the third round absolutely devastated multiple teams.

Doesn’t seem like Christmas Island could be very far from Easter Island, does it?  And 105 degrees east certainly sounds like it would land in the Pacific.  But no, we all learned that Christmas Island is in the Indian Ocean, and belongs to Australia.  It wasn’t just that this question was tough (although it was) but that more than a couple teams, including the Goofballs and “Hillary Did Harambe”, put their 9-point wager on this and came up dry.  This unfortunately set them too far back to contend for the top spots.

The Final was an interesting one; about half of the teams knew that Saturn was the Roman equivalent of Cronus, and the object of the Saturnalia festival.  Two teams came up with “Sol Invictus”, a very interesting (incorrect) answer than nonetheless shows an impressively deep knowledge of ancient Roman December holidays.  Your top three:

First Place:  Faithless Electors (a.k.a. Capital Hillbillies)

Second Place:  Three Million People Can’t Be Wrong

Third Place:  Where’s Beck?

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

‘Tis the season for smiling faces, carols sung (badly) loudly and COOKIES!  Champions set a new record tonight as my entire tray was cleared out in approximately 6.5 minutes.  I know you all were hungry but good god!  You people are fast!  I have no idea how many years we have been doing Christmas cookies together, but this was by far the fastest results.

Was a fun game but I think everyone was distracted by the good cheer and warm tidings that were going on- Brenda even sold her first house!  Not during the game, but you know what I mean…

Once the halls were decked and the tree was tinseled, it was thankfully not a tie!  In 3rd it was Crystal Methodists, 2nd went to Team Other Sarah and our winners tonight were And we’re all out of Bubblegum!  For next week they want to start out with the cheerful and holiday-like Yersinia Pestis.

Cugini’s Restaurant in Poolesville, MD

We had ourselves a little Christmas party here at Cugini’s in Poolesville, and these wonderful players provided a full spread of holiday goodness!  Our first category featured an excellent Christmas movie courtesy of Will Ferrell, and we had a call back to a little 50/60’s cop drama.  Round two featured a personal favorite of mine as we delved into the Star Wars universe!  The puzzle page had tons of holiday quotes for you to reminisce and some Super Bowl winners (Redskins?! BWUHAHAHAHA!).  The third round spoke about the “Festival of Lights”, and the final round “had information vegetable, animal, and mineral”.  Thank you so much for the holiday love and gifts, and I want to wish each and every one of you a heartfelt Merry Christmas.  Here are the results:

First Place:  Never Mind

Second Place:  Lightfoot

Third Place:  MoMo

Orioles Nest in Frederick, MD

Tonight we had plenty of Holiday themed trivia, as we touched on all three of the major ones: Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.  We kicked things off with a question about the movie Rent, which even has a Christmas song in it called ‘Christmas Bells’.  The audio clue asked teams to identify who was singing three different Christmas carols, which proved tough on at least one of the clips.

Halftime asked teams to match movie quotes to the movie they are from based on a still from the movie. We also asked teams to name the last ten NFL teams to win a Super Bowl, with repeats only counting once.  The final question was about Deities, and proved rather tough as only a few teams got it right. This led to third place going to Vandalay Industries, second place to Black Steel, and the win going to Suck It Trebek by a single point! Congrats! Happy holidays and I’ll see you all next week!

Until next time,

~ Chad

Senor Tequila’s in Germantown, MD

And just like that, the last game of Pour House Trivia for 2016 at Senor Tequilas is in the books!

Highlights of the Night:

In “Crank-The-Christmas-Tunes”: No seriously, crank it, because it’s hard to hear them; the audio question was a doozy tonight. Harry Connick Jr. and Pentatonix were both tough pulls. Can’t mistake that Neil Diamond voice though!

In “Someone-Get-Me-A-Map”: The Geography question saw the teams coming up with answers all over the globe, with a wide variety of countries represented. Clearly we need some remedial maps up in here pronto. Maybe Santa will bring you good trivia players a globe for Christmas!

In “Oh-Come-ON-Now”: I didn’t think for a second that the Swahili question would be a total whiff. Not because I think most people know Swahili, but because you’d think the sub-theme of the set would be enough of a hint for what we were going for. so when I start getting answers like Mufasa, Simba, and Rafiki (among *ahem* others) clearly we’re on the wrong wavelength!

The final tonight was messy, but in the end our podium was set.

In third place tonight, Quiz in my Pants!

In second place tonight, the Fan Club!

In first place tonight, Axl’s Doghouse!

Great game everyone! As I said, tonight was our last game of 2016 here at Senor Tequilas, we are off next week, and we will reconvene in 2017.  Until then, have a safe and happy holiday and New Year!

FireFlies in Alexandria, VA

Seven teams appeared, three of whom were new to the Fireflies PHT fold. First, welcome! I am hopeful you had a great time (I suspect you did. I’m an awesome host.) Second, WELL DONE. I mean, like, really WELL DONE.

Why, you ask?

Well, one of those aforementioned new teams FINALLY dethroned our 13-weeks-in-a-row champions, the infernally brilliant Milwaukee Beers. Who was it? Team Neighbor Trouble!!  But wait! Third place was ALSO secured by a new team, the B+ Team. (We all agreed we hope this is our collective semester average. And by “our”, I mean mine, too).

Where’d Milwaukee Beers end up? Fret not, they placed. SECOND, but they placed 🙂   As much hell as I give Beers, they have my utmost respect.  I just admit to being really happy for some healthy competition. (Ask the team formerly named “Team Wednesday”).

Lastly, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Festivus, and every other holiday you might celebrate between now and when next we meet: NEXT TUESDAY.

Again, here are your finishers:

First Place:  Neighbor Trouble

Second Place:  Milwaukee Beers

Third Place:  B+ Team

Blue Parrott in St. Petersburg, FL

It was a Festive night at the Blue Parrot tonight!  We had six teams playing, all for the win!  The field was tightly packed after the picture round, but the third round was a toughy for some of the teams.  Going into the final, the top seeds were Romeo’s Revenge, Quizknows, GTS and Sic Semper Tyranus.  It all came down to the wagering this holiday.  The Quizknows were triumphant in their Christmas attire!  Thanks to all who played and Happy Holidays!

It was a night to remember for Sumatran Storm!!

On their 4th anniversary (the Blue Topaz Anniversary), Sumatran Storm used some gale-force winds to blow away their opponents, taking down their first victory of the season!

Third Quarter Nose Dive and Sad and Demented but Social rounded out our podium.

The play-of-the-night, however, goes to Kirsten for stealingthat freaking awesome slipper/blanket combo from our very own Denny Grizzle, and leaving him with a small (yet novel) snowglobe.

Next week, our first category will be The Beatles, as chosen by Sumatran Storm.  See you then, walruses!

Quincy’s South in Rockville, MD

I was THIS close to playing Christmas music all night but I didn’t have the right playlist and didn’t wanna have that awkward 2-minute “Silent Night” playthrough that would’ve dropped the energy down a ton.  So we had normal music, but it was certainly festive as I got to eat a cupcake in celebration of the holidays AND Jane’s birthday!  Happy birthday to Jane of Sofa King Smart!

Uncle Jack told me at the beginning of the game that instead of a tiebreaker question at the end, tonight they elected that a tie would be decided with a DANCE OFF!  I agreed immediately, warned the crowd, and awaited the hopefully inevitable tie after the final question. Uncle Jack tried to make sure they’d fall into the top 3 so they could take part in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Well, Uncle Jack was in the top 3 but they trailed a bit going into the 2nd half. It was SFS that was leading starting Round 3. They looked very good in the first half BUT a 9 wager and the +5 bonus chip being destroyed on the 1st question of Round 3 ruined their hopes and dreams of being the champs tonight. This fall from the top left Uncle Jack some room to move into the lead.

Consistent play through the 2nd half helped Uncle Jack hold a 1 point lead going into the final. In order to guarantee a tie after the final, they’d need to bet 11 points and get the final right, so we could have that sweet sweet dance-off tiebreaker!  Well, Uncle Jack wanted to win too badly.  They bet 12, got the final right, and won the game outright. Shucks…

2nd place went to BTW and 3rd to Wingardium Triviosa, both teams playing very well in the 2nd half and nailing the final to secure a $ spot! Screaming Death Monkey would’ve been in the running but a slip on the final question cost them! Thanks much guys, have a good holiday! We’ll see you back here in ONE WEEK! Dec. 27th. Same time, same place. Until then 😉

We had some newcomers tonight, as the appropriately named Upstagers took the show and ran with it.  They decided to play at the very last minute, and were winning from then on.  Boogie Friends boogied into the second place, with Snow Demons right behind them to round out our top three.  It’s starting to look at lot like we’ve got competition.  Next week we’ll be casting spells and discussing Harry Potter.
