And the Weekend Trivia Winners Are…

Yes, to coincide with Oscar Sunday, we managed to cram in as much as Academy Awards trivia as our loyal players could handle.  Just as the telecast was beginning last night, we closed our Sunday game with an interesting final question regarding an A-list performer.  But, who were the A-list performers at our trivia games?  Let’s find out:

WEEKEND STATS AND FACTS (27 teams across five venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Uncle Jack (Belles’) with 169

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Uncle Jack (Belles’) with 159

–> Highest First Half Score: Uncle Jack (Belles’) with 88

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions and final): Give Us Your Beer Money (Pretzel & Pizza)

SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (66.7% success rate):

–> The name of a certain South American capital city is an anagram of a certain African country. Name BOTH the city and the country.

SUNDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (50.0% success rate):

–> Despite earning his first career nomination about 12 years ago, who is the only person in Oscar history to earn nominations in each of six different categories?  (you’ll find the answers later in this blog)

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD

It wasn’t quite standing room only, but we had ourselves a quaint game of Pour House Trivia here at Belles’ Sports Bar on this fine Saturday evening; I don’t know whether weather was a factor however.  I’m gonna keep it brief tonight as the game moved rather quickly.  We weaved our way through the first half with a variety of topics including household cleaning habits, composer Danny Elfman, the United Nations, and the actor depicted here in the role of Superman (this is the one who has the ‘S’ on the end of his name):

Superman

For the second half, we examined the size of a Super Big Gulp, the centerpiece of Disney’s Epcot Center, the all but defunct AOL, and this memorable spacecraft, which changed the standards of science fiction on film:

2001 Film Trivia

It was a very high scoring game tonight with the top three scores at 169, 168, and 160 respectively.  Here are the results:

First Place:  Uncle Jack

Second Place:  Taco Cat

Third Place:  Smarty Pants

Huge shout out to Turd Ferguson for that 160 score considering that the only had more than seven members for only a couple of questions.  Your first category next week is a Triple 50/50: Red Sox or Orioles

Pretzel and Pizza Creations in Hagerstown, MD

Wow!  We had an AWESOME turnout for our Saturday game at Pretzel & Pizza Creations!  The weather may have gotten a little bit colder, but the competition fighting for the top three spots was HOT!!  There were five different teams that kept switching in and out of the top spots all night, and once we reached the final question, only two teams came up with Lima and Mali for the correct final answer, and this is how the night ended…

Making a move up to 3rd late in the game and holding on until the end was Sanford & Son!  Meanwhile, they were in and out of first place all night but settling for 2nd after the final question was the Off Beats!  Finally, they played tough all night and were able to hold onto 1st for the win, Give Us Your Beer Money were this week’s champions! They decided on “Beards of Washington Nationals Players” to be next Saturday’s first category (even though the 2013 Red Sox OWN that category!), so study up and come join us for some fun at Pretzel & Pizza Creations!

Captain Benders Tavern in Sharpsburg, MD

It was Oscar night at Captain Benders tonight (Oscar the Grouch, that is…)!  We kicked things off with “Smokey and the Bandit” as our Winner’s Choice category and finished Round 1 on a more poetic note.  Round 2 began with our audio category and some 3-word b(and) titles.  We wrapped with Three Clues about One Switzerland (who knew they’re so into Summer Olympics?!) Then came time for the halftime puzzle page where we had our Oscar lineup and some stately lakes – and you guys crushed it.

Onto Round 3, we had some global food to start things off and ended on a nerdy note with some Science Fiction. For our 6-4-2, we tipped our hats to former VP Joe Biden.  For our 4th and final round we threw it back to the 2K’s to start and just before the final I let you all Gimme the bird!  The final question all came down to…. What else?  The Academy Awards!  And in the end, who took home the golden statue?  I mean… neon coupons?!

First Place:  Boh’s & Hoes

Second Place:  Fisted Sister

Third Place:  Arrondissements of Ouagadougou

Next week’s first category: “Finding Bigfoot”

See you next Sunday!

The Beacon in Frederick, MD

Sunday nights game at The Beacon had one of those surprise endings that are always fun to see!  We had one team leading in first from the end of the first round until we reached the final question.  The most they led by was eight points, so the team in second place always stayed in close range, and it paid off BIG time as the only team to answer the final correctly!

Finishing in third place was Team Delaware, dropping to second place on a tough beat was the Witiots, and pulling off one of those last-second Hail Mary touchdown catches to take the win was Fat Kids Are Hard To Kidnap!  Great pull on George Clooney!  Naturally, they picked the “Ocean’s Eleven” remake as next week’s first category, so study up and come join us for some fun on Sunday at The Beacon!
