An Earth-Shaking Night of Tuesday Trivia!

Tuesday night witnessed the opening of the newest PHT venue: White Horse Tavern in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.  Overall, last night’s game featured 103 teams across 15 venues:

Tuesday’s game began with a question on this infamous photograph:

Loch Ness

We also discussed Pepperidge Farm cookies, Egyptian newspapers, and the little-known fact that Doritos were introduced to the public at Disneyland.  After one round of play, seven teams were sporting a perfect score of 36 points.

Tuesday’s second round took us to The Situation Room (in both the White House and CNN studios) before moving on to a question regarding the 1989 World Series.  Most of our teams knew that the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants were interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake, but only 14% of the field tacked on two bonus points by knowing that Dave Stewart took home MVP honors that year.  We closed the round with a look at an early film from director Tim Burton, which later inspired a more notable animated film:

In 1984, Burton directed a 30-minute live-action film entitled “Frankenweenie”, which formed the basis for the feature-length animated film three decades later.  Only eight teams earned bonus points here by knowing that the canine character in both films was named Sparky.  As a result, How Did I Get Here? (Greene Growlers) earned the only perfect score of the second round.

Tuesday’s halftime page included pictures of films that featured actors who appeared on the TV series “The Office”.  We saw seven teams record a perfect score of 20 points, with the overall average reaching 17.2 points.  Here are Tuesday’s top scoring teams after the halftime break:

The third round included questions on European geography, and this financial brand

After fielding questions on foreign desserts and hard water, several teams were on their way to a perfect third round before hitting a speed bump in the category of classic rock.  While most of the field knew that the Three Dog Night song “Joy to the World” begins with the line “Jeremiah was a bullfrog”, only five teams could name either one of the other number-one hits for the band: “Mama Told Me Not to Come” or “Black and White”.  Thanks to that final bonus question, the third round did not yield any perfect scores.

Our six-point clue took us back to high school English class:

–> Which six-letter word is the surname of the title character in a novella written by Henry James, as well as the occupation of Robin in “The Canterbury Tales”?

Only seven teams earned the full six points here with the correct response of Miller (“Daisy Miller” and “The Miller’s Tale”).

Tuesday’s final round opened with a question on this TV series:

Boardwalk Empire HBO

Later topics included Mexican General Santa Anna, the film “A Clockwork Orange”, and Super Bowl MVPs.  Six teams ran the table in the final round with perfect scores.  Here are Tuesday’s top scores after four rounds of play:

FINAL QUESTION (49.8% success rate):

–> According to American author Henry David Thoreau, which ONE WORD completes the following quote: “The rarest quality in an epitaph is…”?

About half of our teams responded correctly with “truth”.  Congratulations to Working the Corner (Olney Winery), who recorded the only Perfect 21 tonight with correct responses on all wagering questions.  Here are the highest overall scores from Tuesday night:
