A Wicked Wednesday of Holiday Trivia!

Over the past few nights, we’ve managed to squeeze in a few bits of Christmas trivia.  But after looking at some of the scores over these past few nights, I’m guessing most of you will be happy when the Christmas trivia ends.  We know, it’s been a while since you’ve seen some of this Christmas specials.  On to the nightly recap!

WEDNESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (89 teams across 12 venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Flight Level Awesome (Belles’) with 164

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Multiple Scoregasms (Bennigan’s – Frederick) and Does he Look Like a Biff? (Barefoot Bernie’s) with 155

–> Highest First Half Score: Rum Ham (Valley Grill) with 90

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Thanks to two rather difficult questions on obscure characters from “Frosty the Snowman”, and U.S. geography, not team scored the Perfect 21 tonight.

–> Halftime played to an average of 16.1, with about 10% of our teams scoring 20.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (61.5% success rate):

–> Which western National Park is home to rock formations called Dante’s View and Devil’s Golf Course?  (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Valley Grill in Middletown, MD

We were packed to capacity at Valley Grill tonight as we had 16 teams compete for one last shot of trivia before Christmas!  The epic “Rogue One” film was our first category tonight, and we had TWO references to the recently unfunny Adam Sandler in the first round.  We had ice cream and the NFL for round two to treat all those Thursday/Sunday/Monday couch potato fans.  The yuletide hits just kept on coming with the highest grossing Christmas comedy of all time, and a magical character who yelled “Happy Birthday!” whenever he put on a certain hat. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas! Here are the results:

First Place:  Stupid Sexy Flanders

Second Place:  Shakeweight

Third Place:  Fast Forward Not Available

The Tavern in Olney, MD

Wow! We had a LOT of up and down moments for most of our teams at The Tavern on Wednesday!  At least three different teams held first place at one point during the game, and we had a two or three way tie somewhere in the top three after EVERY ROUND!  Not surprising, there was ANOTHER big shift in the top three after the final question, and we still needed a tie breaker for second place!  After we broke the tie, Shart Attack was a year off and got stuck with 3rd, while Moving Forward was exactly right for the tie and grabbed 2nd!  Some of the team had left because they automatically assumed they only finished second, and were completely shocked to learn they moved into 1st after the final, Olney The Lonely were this week’s champions!  They picked “The Works of John Steinbeck” for next Wednesdays winners choice, so have a VERY happy holidays, and we’ll see you next week at The Tavern!

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD

Oh Belles’, you’re always a great time.  Year round, there’s a special type of love that happens in here.  With all the trash talking, there’s also some straight forward caring and it’s strange when some of the family is missing – welcome back from your honeymoon Periodic Table Dancers!  All is right in the world, and there were cookies!  Does it get much better than that?  Well, throw in a competitive game, our awesome bartender Rick and cold beer? Just about heaven for our Wednesday night 😉  Merry Christmas everyone!

After a damn good final tonight it was Periodic Table Dancers who had a major comeback and pulled 3rd tonight! 2nd went to Tokyo Sex Whale and 1st tonight was Flight Level Awesome!  They are making this a habit!

Bennigan’s in Frederick, MD

Just when you think you have a handle on a bar, things get turned upside down during a game of Pour House Trivia at Bennigan’s in Frederick.  As we inched closer to Christmas, not everyone was feeling the holiday cheer from the themed questions, and the standings showed it!

I don’t think I have the right words to express just how much of a knock-down drag out fight last night’s game was. Teams were up and down and all over the scoreboard; teams that usually did well were low on the totem pole while other teams who generally struggle found the top spots for a while.  A few teams got the Grinch bug in them, while others were definitely feeling the spirit.  And I was a hot mess, I could not have been more off my game tonight. Definitely think I’m coming down with a cold and I was having all kinds of problems.  But we got it done in good time, and after a tumultuous final, we had our podium.

In third place tonight, Pop Vultures!

In second place tonight, Momentary Lapse of Reason!

In first place tonight, Tom Brady!

Nido’s Ristorante in Frederick, MD

Tonight’s game was a special Holiday edition, as we had several questions and categories that were Holiday themed. We even had a Holiday theme on the halftime page as we asked teams to identify TV shows based on shots of their Christmas episodes.  We had an audio clue about Christmas characters, where we asked teams to identify Cindy Lou Who, Hermey the Elf, and Jacob Marley from audio clues.

The final question of the night was decidedly NOT Holiday themed however, with a question about US National Parks. Turns out most teams did well, which didn’t change things much. Third place went to Dalek Dance Party, second went to Team Wednesday, and the winners for tonight were Three Fingers Worth! Next week we start with ‘Triple 50/50: Are they Jewish?’ which should be fun. Have a happy holiday!

Until next time,

~Chad

Bennigan’s in Clarksburg, MD

Holy cow!  A packed house tonight!  I guess everyone coming out for the last game before the holidays!  We had new teams, existing teams, even a few teams that we haven’t seen in AGES!  Good to have such a big crowd just before we celebrate the season! Tonight was a CRAZY game, like one we’d never seen before.  Here’s how it all went down.

So Don’t Call Me Shirley bit it early, missing their 9 and their +5 on the Audio clue of Round 2.  I don’t think any team in the history of games I’ve personally hosted has ever came back from missing a 9 + 5 on a single question.  In my head they were already out.  The AUDIO clue itself was crucial as only 4 teams got points, and only 1 team picked up the 2 point bonus.  The 2 point bonus went to Roaming Gnomes who were just on fire for the first half, leading going into round 3.

Don’t Call Me Shirley held their composure and tried to make the best of a failed night, getting nearly everything right in Round 3.  We started Round 4 with a US Geography question that was perhaps more painful than the AUDIO clue… 4 teams bonused this, most of them missing it completely, and lots of 9 wagers too… Roaming Gnomes missed a 9 + 5, Downtown Dinky Town missed a 9 + 5, and a ton of other teams got burned hard!

The atrocities were many, and no score was safe going into the final. A hard fought night saw some low scores going in, but still SOMEONE had to be crowned a winner tonight. Roaming Gnomes was leading at 143, looking to get the final right and forget the bomb they hit in the 4th round. Not so fast though, as they missed the final and dropped down significantly. Downtown Dinky Town was in 2nd place AND they got the final BUT they bet defensively, and only moved up 3 points after their get. This left Don’t Call Me Shirley to climb the ranks, adding 12 to their score, they found themselves atop the leaderboard. Holy cow… A win for Don’t Call Me Shirley! Do you believe in miracles? I guess it’s Christmas…

Furnace Bar and Grill in Thurmont, MD

Tonight at The Furnace in Thurmont, we had a close game they came down to strategic wagering during the last round and the final question. One of the funniest moments from tonight was during our question in regards to name that sports position. When everyone on the team ‘Breakfast for Dinner’ heard the question, it came down to relying on Steve.  The question asked to name the position common to basketball, football, and hockey.  Well, Steve did not let his team down, with he (and other teams) picking up the correct answer before the multiple-choice hint was given!  Of course, the common position name was the center.  Tonight taking home the win was Smarty Pants, in second was Breakfast for Dinner, and climbing their way back into third place was the Wolfpack.

Barefoot Bernie’s in Hagerstown, MD

Welcome back Slapsgiving!  The old champions have returned to Bernie’s, and made a great showing tonight.  Does He Look Like a Biff started in a solid third place, but rose to second at halftime.  By the end of the 4th round, they held onto first with a solid 12 point lead. Taint Too Proud to Beg was standing in fourth by a point.  The fourth round and the final question caused total chaos as the standings constantly shifted.  In the end, Slapsgiving made their comeback a great one with a third place showing.  Taint Too Proud to Beg came back on the final question to clinch second, while Does He Look Like a Biff held on to first place with a strategic 1 point wager.
