A Super Weekend of Pour House Trivia!
We were so psyched about Super Bowl weekend, we decided to run games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! Our first weekend of Season XV provided some fantastic finishes (well, not as fantastic as the Super Bowl). Let’s check out the top teams and the recaps!
WEEKEND STATS AND FACTS (31 teams across four venues):
–> Highest Overall Score: Uncle Jack (Belles’) with 167
–> Highest Score after Round 4: Uncle Jack and The Arrondissements of Ouagadougou (Captain Benders) with 156
–> Highest First Half Score: The Arrondissements of Ouagadougou with 90
–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions and final): Uncle Jack and The Arrondissements of Ouagadougou
SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (21.7% success rate):
–> There are about 6,000 languages spoken in the world. About 1,000 of those are spoken on a single island, more than on most continents. What is this island?
SUNDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (12.5% success rate):
–> On the American Film Institute’s List of the top 100 film quotes of all-time, this actor is responsible for the quotes that landed at #2 and #3 on the list. For your wager, name this actor, who won an Oscar for BOTH of those roles. (you’ll find the answers later in this blog)
Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont, MD
It was another hugely successful night at Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont, as countless new teams joined the Pour House fold, and everyone staid fast until the end. Absolutely un-countable bottles of wine were consumed, and great fun was had. Seriously. The wine here flows FREELY.
Nonetheless, it was a very competitive game throughout. Teams jockeyed for position from round to round, but the real equalizer — for the first time in my experience — was the final question. And not because some teams knew the answer, and others didn’t. This time, it came down to wagers (How many times have I said that the final question wager amount is critical strategy?!). Well, it was. Not. A. Single. Team. answered the final question correctly. Admittedly, it was tough: but once (and after everyone had been given their bad news) I played (quietly) and then myself QUOTED his eminence Marlon Brando with his unendingly awesome line: “I’ll make them an offer they can’t refuse”, EVERYONE knew how far off the mark they were. 🙂 Here is how the medal stand looked tonight:
First Place: The Bald and the Beautiful
Second Place: That’s What You Get for Thinking
Third Place” The Trebeks
As was the case the last time I was here, it was an absolute honor and pleasure to serve as your host. I encourage everyone to come again in two weeks (February 17) when we host Pour House Trivia again. What better reason to brave the cold than wine and trivia?!
Until then, Fair Winds and Following Seas,

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD
As Elton John almost said “Saturday Night’s alright for trivia”, and it certainly was here at Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, with our Season XV kickoff! For the first round, we weaved our way through the streets of San Francisco, some TV families, and corrected the common misnomer that Ronald Reagan was born in California. Our second round featured some songs sung in a foreign language, a classic building set, and this cult classic comedy:
After the halftime break, the third round reminded us that Rocky Balboa appeared in seven films, Big Ben Roethlisberger the youngest QB to win a Superbowl, and we “got the sensation” by remembering these sweet treats:
We closed the game by remembering that there is a device a doctor uses to examine your intestines, and Nazareth helped us deal with one hell of a hangover. Here are the results:
First Place: Uncle Jack
Second Place: Illuminati
Third Place: Wiseacres

Pretzel and Pizza Creations in Hagerstown, MD
Now that Pour House Trivia Season XV is officially off and running, it’s anybody’s shot to be House Champion at Pretzel & Pizza Creations here in Hagerstown. The battle for the top spot tonight was fierce! There was even a tie for first once we reached the final question. However, EVERY team wagered the full 12 points and only ONE team answered New Guinea correctly, shooting up from fifth to first place at the last second!!
After we broke the tie that was now for second place, The Arrondissements of Ouagadongou took third, winning the tie breaker for second was Give Us Your Beer Money, and making the huge jump to first place for the first win of Season XV was a team visiting us from PA: We Are Groot! Don’t forget to join us this Saturday for a game at Pretzel & Pizza Creations!

Captain Benders Tavern in Sharpsburg, MD
It was awesome to be back with my Captain Benders family for our Super Bowl LI edition of Pour House Trivia and the start of Season XV! We kicked things off with my inability to pronounce Burgess Meredith’s name (oops) and wrapped up Round 1 with some Hungry Hungry Hippos. For our audio to start Round 2, we featured three historic speeches and ended with three TV characters.
We kept things local when it came to the halftime puzzle pages, which set us up for some stately websites to start Round 3, which ended with a fun little Triple 50-50. We Zip-a-dee-doo-dah’d out way through the 6-4-2 and into Round 4 with a fictional locale. When it came down to the final question we tested your knowledge of film quotes and it determined our big winners for the evening….
First Place: The Arrondissements of Ouagadougou
Second Place: Boh’s & Hoes
Third Place: Fisted Sister
Congrats to the Patriots, condolences to the Atlanta Falcons!
Next week’s first category: “The Godfather”
See you next Sunday!

The Beacon in Frederick, MD
There was no trivia this weekend at the Beacon. Jon returns on Feb. 12th to kick off Season XV with a question on U.S. state capitals.
