A Strange Trivial Journey to Milan to Minsk…

The week between Christmas and New Year’s can be a bit iffy in terms of trivia turnout, but our regular teams were out in full force, as we hosted three venues with more than a dozen teams on Tuesday night!  One thing we learned tonight is that no matter how popular some modern hip hop stars might be, most of our teams really don’t know (or don’t care).  In spite of the question on Future, we had some of these teams outperform the field tonight:

TUESDAY’S STATS AND FACTS (91 teams across 12 venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Wingardium Triviosa (Quincy’s South) with 169

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Wingardium Triviosa (Quincy’s South) with 157

–> Highest First Half Score: And We’re All Out of Bubblegum (Champion Billiards) and Sofa King Smart (Quincy’s South)

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagers and final): Screaming Death Monkey (Quincy’s South)

–> The halftime page played on the easier side tonight, scoring an average of 17.5, with about 20% of our teams scoring 20 points.

–> The 6-4-2 question was a tough one, as only seven teams earned six point by knowing that black is the color of the center ring on the Olympic flag.

TONIGHT’S FINAL QUESTION (48.1% success rate):

–> Sporting a red bonnet, Lorraine Collett was the model for the original trademark of what brand, whose slogan at one point was “Have you had your iron today”?   (you’ll find the answer later in this blog)

Capitol City Brewing in Arlington, VA

Hey, everyone!  First off, I want to say thanks for the warm reception you gave me as your substitute host for tonight while Austin is off for the week.  Secondly, thanks for joining us for the last trivia night here at Capitol City Brewing of 2016.  So, how did the night go?

Round 1 was all about sports as all the teams knew about the San Francisco 49ers current embarrassing season and they were able to mix their knowledge of sport with film in answering questions about “Rocky”.  Round 2 was a bit more challenging with questions about Venice and the famous bridge that convicts crossed before finally being incarcerated.  But, teams were able to make a comeback on binomial classifications of organisms, with even one team knowing the plural of “genus” is “genera”.

In the second half, when asked to identify the fifth tribe of the “Five Civilized Tribes” of Native America, only one team fell for the trap of picking an alliterative tribe, while everyone else said it was the Seminole, along with the Creek, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Chickasaw.  Teams that were trailing were then able to bridge the gap by using clever wordplay to make that long journey from mink to Minsk.

In the end, the two teams who were able to recall those old TV commercials of Sun-Maid Raisins asking “Have you had your iron today?” earned the last twelve points of the year.  This meant our standings were as follows:

First Place:  Stay Safe Betty White (Capitol City Hillbillies)

Second Place:  Three Million People Can’t Be Wrong

Third Place:  Full Metal Bikini

Next week’s first category:  “Better Off Dead”

Have a safe and happy New Year’s holiday and we’ll see you next week for the first quiz of 2017!

Champion Billiards in Frederick, MD

It was nice to have everyone back in Champions after our whirlwind holiday weekend!  Forgive my brevity, but I am going to get right to the point tonight – 14 teams battled it out tonight, but of course it’s all about the king of the mountain…  It was a tie tonight after the final for that top spot and We’re All Out of Bubblegum was giving Crystal Methodists a taste of their own medicine on the taunting!  It must have worked as Bubblegum took the tiebreaker and with a first category of Zephyrs for next week, they have made it all the way through the alphabet this season! Impressive!  Comfortably Dum was content with 2nd place, just as long as they beat Jungle Fever after all ;).  Third place tonight went to Pulpit Fiction who put in an appearance and stepped up on the podium like they were never gone at all!  Nice game… I will see you next week!  Have a safe New Year’s.

Cugini’s Restaurant in Poolesville, MD

Thanks again to all you wonderful folks here at Cugini’s for the congratulations and well wishes in regards to my engagement, you truly are the best!  We had some post-Christmas action tonight with a top rated NBC drama and a 1976 Oscar winning film in our first round.  Round two had us playing around with a little science knowledge as well as a quick visit to the iconic city of Venice.  For the halftime puzzle we said goodbye to some celebrities that left us during 2016, sadly Carrie Fisher happened too suddenly to make the list.  In the 2nd half we found out the “T” in James T. Kirk, the capital of Belarus, and delved into a couple of Johnny Depp characters.  I hope you all have a Happy New Year, see you in 2017! Here are the results:

First Place:  Five Must Get Beers

Second Place:  No Clue

Third Place:  MoMo

Our first category for 2017 will be the late Dick Clark

Orioles Nest in Frederick, MD

Tonight we started out with an audio question, this time about The Eagles.  The clip basically played the entirety of ‘Already Gone’ but edited so they never said the title, which most teams got.  The actual audio question of the night was about pop songs being played by marching bands and was pretty fun too.  The halftime page asked teams to identify famous people who died in 2016, which was fun (and didn’t include Carrie Fisher, RIP), as well as matching butlers/servants to the people they work for.

The final question of the night was in the category of brand name slogans, and teams did pretty well with it. This meant scores didn’t change much at the end, with third place going to We’ve Embraced Our Mediocrity, second going to His and Her Peas, and congrats to Suck It Trebek on the win! Next week we start with ‘Chad sings/raps Hamilton’, which is something you definitely don’t want to miss! I’ll see you all then!

Until next time,

~ Chad

Tilted Kilt in Frederick, MD

With the end of 2016 fast approaching, we had time for one more game of trivia at Tilted Kilt. Our teams dug into this set with a quickness that wasn’t *always* for the best. But who would pick up the last Tuesday points of 2016?

Turns out it was settled before the final, with everyone grabbing the correct answer.

First Place: Poovey Farms

Second Place: The Trivia Knight

Third Place: Hooker and Blackjack

Poovey notched another win, and selected “Triple 50/50: Homer Simpson or Phillip J Fry Quotes”. Study up, and I’ll see you in 2017!

FireFlies in Alexandria, VA

It was a holiday-crazy crowd in attendance at Fireflies, yet there were machinations and the general craziness you’d expect from every Tuesday trivia event.  Shamefully (yes, I’m calling you out), Milwaukee Beers — having just last week had been unexpectedly dethroned from a 13-week championship — elected not to participate tonight, nor to regain their honor.

Instead, Barflies (yes, Barflies!) made it exciting. No disrespect to eventual night champions B-58s, but Barflies is a sort of come-as-you-are team. And were it not for a dismal fourth round, they very well may have carried the night.

Alas. See you next week, ya filthy bastards!  Your top teams:

First Place:  B-58s

Second Place:  Barflies

Third Place:  MacStew

Next week’s first category: January, 1918.  I’d suggest boning up on your WWI history, y’all.

Blue Parrott in St. Petersburg, FL

All seven teams (including a new one comprised of visitors from Canada!) had a blast during Tuesday’s mid-holiday trivia session. The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a relaxing one — until you throw a little trivia in and things get competitive. Nearly all of our teams were scratching their heads over questions about Goldman Sachs, rapper Future, and Johnny Depp’s roles in animated movies. But Quizknows ultimately won out, with their knowledge of the Sun-Maid Raisins trademark edging the Canucks out of the top three. Thanks to all who played, and we’ll see you in 2017!

Second Place:  GTS

Third Place:  Romeo’s Revenge

Monkey La La in Frederick, MD

We had a dominating performance tonight, and it all came down to a purple triceratops!  Southpaw Fish knew their purple dinosaurs, and took home the gold at the final Lala PHT event of 2016!

Sad and Demented but Social took home silver, and taking the bronze playing as a solo was Stink Floyd.

To all 6 teams who thought the Toronto Raptors mascot is a triceratopsNext time you decide on pulling the trigger on a 2-point bonus, maybe wait a few seconds and really, reaaallyy think about your answer.

Next week’s winner’s-choice category is Carrie Fisher, as chosen by Southpaw Fish!  May the force be with us all to get us through this year.

See you next Tuesday,

~ Colin

Quincy’s South in Rockville, MD

It was RAGING out here tonight with nearly 20 teams celebrating the holidays with us! Most of the 20-ish teams were newcomers, leading to a rude awakening for these first-timers. The veteran teams owned it tonight!

The audio clue tonight gave teams 3 well-known pop songs BUT (to celebrate the recent College Bowl season) the songs were covered by Marching Bands! The halftime page was commemorative as well, as we looked back over the celebrities we’ve lost in 2016. Apparently, 2016 was a real $#!& show, and so was the halftime page, showing a sub-15 average across the table!

The Colorado Rockies question in Round 4 seemed to give many of our teams trouble (apparently a majority of teams thinking that the “Raptors” mascot was actually a “triceratops”; wouldn’t that be like the Detriot Lions mascot being a tiger?); Wingardium Triviosa was able to get through that one, picking up the 2 points on top of their wager. Another 2 point get for them in the round helped close the gap between them and first place.

We then got to my favorite question of the night: Johnny Depp Film Roles! Wingardium Triviosa picked up BOTH answers, while the teams in 1st and 2nd (Sofa King Smart and Uncle Jack, respectively) got NEITHER, leading to a 3 point swing, favoring WT, and sling-shotting Wingardium into the lead!

The final played a bit tough, about 50% on the field. Misses by some teams near the top resulted in an exciting finish! It was close all night, but when it was all said and done, Wingardium Triviosa took it down, followed by Sofa King Smart and Car Ram Rod, who snuck into the top 3 with a get on the final!

Great game all! Back in 2017!!

Stone’s Cove in Bel Air, MD

We had a packed house tonight at Stone’s Cove in Bel Air!  Team Upstagers took first place for the second week in the row, while a team of newcomers called K-Train took second place.  Meanwhile, we had Boogers and Butts and Everything Nuts (what a name!) take third place.  It was a great game, so competitive, so much fun.  Next week, we’ll be going over the State Capitals!
