A Ship Shape Night of Thursday Trivia!

Thursday’s game welcomed the newest venue to the PHT lineup, as our newest host Erin kicked off trivia night at Bear Brick Oven Pizza in Silver Spring.  Overall, we welcomed 106 teams across 13 venues on Thursday night.

Opening round topics from Thursday night included the Ghostbusters film series, the Six Flags chain of amusement parks, and the Andy Capp comic strip.  In a break from the ordinary, the first round also included the most difficult bonus question of the night, asked in the form of a Three Clues question:

  • CLUE 1: The river that flows through Seoul, South Korea bears this name.
  • CLUE 2: It’s the name of the Chinese dynasty that reigned during Confucius’ lifetime.

Very few teams attempted a guess at this point in the question, leading to just five teams earning bonus points with the correct answer of Han.  One of those five teams was Game Time Decision (Loudoun Kitchen), who posted the only perfect score of Thursday’s opening stanza.

Thursday’s audio question featured the planetary song titles of Venus by Shocking Blue, Heaven is a Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle, and Drops of Jupiter by Train.  Other second round topics included the adjective ‘whooping‘ (in reference to either the crane or the cough), the sitcom New Girl, and the Antarctic Lake Vostok.  The first half closed with its most difficult wagering question:

  • Introduced in its ‘modern’ version at the 1912 Summer Games, which Olympic event includes a unique array of disciplines that were designed to simulate the experience of a soldier caught behind enemy lines?

About one-third of the field responded correctly with the modern pentathlon.  Three teams posted 36 points in Thursday’s second round: Non-Bird Reptiles (Loudoun Kitchen), Better Lucky Than Smart (Loudoun Kitchen), and Quarter Century (Crooked Run).

Current Emmy nominees and inventors were the featured topics on Thursday’s halftime page.  Three teams earned a perfect score of 20 points, while the overall average reached 14.7 points.  Here is the overall leaderboard from Thursday’s first half:

We opened Thursday’s second half with a three-part question in which each answer contained a set of initials that is also used as a texting abbreviation.  The answers included John Kerry, League of Legends, and National Parks.  We also discussed Waterford crystal, the chemical element barium, and the recent revival of Walker, Texas Ranger.  Four teams ran the table in Thursday’s third round: Trivia Newton John (Champion Billiards), Game Time Decision (Loudoun Kitchen), Cake or Death (Loudoun Kitchen), and F. U. Covid (Mark’s).

After playing Helter Skelter in the 6-4-2 question, the final round featured questions concerning Super Bowl rematches, children’s literary awards, celebrity palindromes, the film Crazy Rich Asians, and U.S. state capitals.  Eight teams earned a perfect final round score.  These teams stood at the top of the overall leaderboard heading into Thursday’s final question:

FINAL QUESTION (30.2% success rate):

  • Who is the most recent person to direct and star in a film that won the Best Picture Oscar?

Nearly one-third of the field responded correctly with Ben Affleck, who achieved this feat with his film Argo.  Congratulations to Game Time Decision (Loudoun Kitchen) and Power Vacuum (Champion Billiards) were the only two teams to notch the Perfect 21 on Thursday night by answering every wagering question correctly.  Here is Thursday’s final overall leaderboard:
