A Presidential Weekend of Trivia!

For the holiday weekend, we once again held trivia games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!  The response at the Friday night game at the Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont has been overwhelming, and we hope that this venue becomes a permanent addition to the PHT line-up.  With that game included, there were more than 40 teams in action this weekend, so let’s see who topped the overall leaderboard:

WEEKEND STATS AND FACTS (44 teams across five venues):

–> Highest Overall Score: Uncle Jack (Belles’) with 160

–> Highest Score after Round 4: Witiots (The Beacon) with 154

–> Highest First Half Score: Half a Brain (Springfield Winery) with 85

–> Perfect 21 (correct on all wagering questions and final): NONE

FRIDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (33.3% success rate):

–> On September 8, 2012, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter earned the distinction of being the former President who lived the longest amount time after leaving office.  Carter broke the record held by which man who passed away in 1964?

SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (55.5% success rate):

–>  When they began tinkering with aviation, the Wright Brothers made a specific promise to their father.  On May 25, 1910, the two men broke this promise for the only time during their aviation career.  What was this promise?

SUNDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (75.0% success rate):

–> IBM president Thomas Watson posted which word on walls throughout his company offices, and even named the IBM newsletter after it?  (you’ll find the answers later in this blog)

Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont, MD

Once again, we hosted a HUGE crowd at Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont.  So many new teams, it’s impossible to count!  Pour House is SO honored to attract such a diverse and talented field of trivia buffs.  We started on time and finished on time-ish.  That was a major success, given that I had forgotten a power strip, to resupply my pens, and was missing a power cord for one of the speakers.  Fortunately, Mrs. Chief came again to the rescue.  Just in time to start an incredibly competitive game of trivia.  Things I learned tonight:

– None of y’all read Russian literature.  It’s DOSTOEVSKY, people!  Come on, go to the library 🙂

– Not as many people as I might have expected were on Team Jacob, rather than Team Edward.  Big mistake that costed a LOT of points!

– I CANNOT wait to host again in two new weeks.  Please accept my thanks and honors and allow me to express my gratitude for the lifesaver known as Mrs. Chief.  Team Redrum was on fire tonight, running the table on all 21 wagering questions, including the correct response of Herbert Hoover on the final question.  Here are your top three teams tonight:

First Place:  Redrum

Second Place:  Bone Ranger

Third Place:  My Drinking Team has a Trivia Problem

Next week’s first category: “The Shining”

The Shining Film Trivia

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD

We had another packed Saturday night here at Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, and to be frank, I didn’t think it would be due to the nicer weather today, so an extra special thank you for coming out!  We started off the night with some “Star Trek” trivia, advertising slogans, and a certain nursery rhyme flower:

Silver Bell Trivia

We followed that up with round two, which asked about two things that would never go together: Prohibition and NASCAR.  We also stumped most of our field with a question about this actor, who is about to land back on an NBC sitcom (to the surprise of many):

John Lithgow Trivia

Our second half proved a bit tougher on a number of our teams as we cruised through a rare MLB feat, mythology, Marilyn Manson, and this advertising character, who was given a bit more sex appeal in a recent Super Bowl commercial:

Mr. Clean Trivia

The scores really moved around before the final, and it was strategic wagering that made the day in this game. Here are the results:

First Place:  Uncle Jack

Second Place:  Smartinis

Third Place:  Demented and Sad but Social

Next wewk’s first category:  21st Century Country Music (AUDIO)

Pretzel and Pizza Creations in Hagerstown, MD

We had a great game with lots of ups and downs at Pretzel & Pizza Creations in Hagerstwon on Saturday!  The competition was fierce and a few teams held the first place spot at one point during the game.  Once we reached the final question and the answers came in, this is how we finished…

A few teams were able to come up with the correct response on the final question, by knowing that the Wright Brothers broke a very specific promise to their father, when they flew together on May 25, 1910.  Moving up into third place was We Are Groot, holding onto second place was Give Us Your Beer Money, and it’s been a while but pulling out the win tonight was the Off Beats!!

They chose Symphony Orchestra Conductors for next week’s first category, so study up and come join us for some FUN on Saturday at Pretzel & Pizza Creations!!

Coming soon…

The Beacon in Frederick, MD

Sunday night’s game at The Beacon in Frederick was another great one, even though our winner pretty much had first place sewn up by the middle or Round 4!  We did have a rather competitive game going on up to that point, but after the final question was answered, this was how our top three looked…

Most of our teams were able to “THINK” their way to the correct answer on the final: making a late move to take over third place was Fat Kids are Hard to Kidnap, second place was taken by Comfortably Dum, and taking no chances with their lead and getting their first win of Season XV was the Witiots!!

They picked 1970’s Saturday Night Live for next week’s first category, so study up and I’ll look forward to seeing everyone next Sunday night for some fun at The Beacon!!
