Greene Turtle – Hagerstown, MD

Anytime I host trivia during a major sporting event, it’s usually quite a night. I’ve hosted during NBA playoff games, a few Monday Night Football games, and even a few playoff games for the Capitals, which were probably the most fun and exciting. However, today’s atmosphere for the Women’s World Cup game for the US vs Colombia in the first round of elimination was just something completely different. It was tough for teams to hear me even when I cranked my mic volume waaayyy higher than I usually do. On several occasions I had to stop reading the question knowing nobody would hear me because the US either scored or came extremely close to scoring, leading to cheering throughout the entire building. Even though it made hosting a bit more difficult, I still had a blast doing tonight’s game, and am super happy that our women pulled off the victory.

Anyway, enough about that, tonight’s game featured a few teams getting out to a hot start before getting caught by the rest of the pack, and ended with a bit of leapfrogging. We even had a question about Hearthstone, which is a really fun online card game, even though I’m not very good at it. At halftime, I learned that people couldn’t quite remember who Michael McDonald is (no, not the guy from the Doobie Brothers, the comedic actor) which is a bit of a shame. I will always remember his scene where he gets run over by the steamroller in Austin Powers, that bit is hilarious. Tonight’s art question was definitely the hardest of the night, with Marcel Duchamp just sweeping the field, even though a few teams did guess that his sculpture called “Fountain” was simply a urinal, which is just bizarre, but definitely believable for Dadaism, which most teams had never even heard of.

In the end, the final question and the strategic wagering on it led to several changes in the final standings. Making a huge jump up into third place is a team of newcomers, congrats going out to B+P on a solid rookie performance. Taking second place was the Turtleheads, who held the lead going into the final but bet too defensively to secure the victory. Snatching the victory with a correct answer on the final was Cotton Candy, pulling off the win with a nice comeback at the end. Next week we start out with a question on the Halo video game series, courtesy of Cotton Candy, so time to go bust out the Xbox and do some “studying!” I’ll see you all again next week!

Until next time,

il Forno – Frederick, MD

PACKED HOUSE at Das Forno tonight, which of course is German for “il Forno.”

Double digit teams, hot in here just like it is outside! Great friends, great place to be, I was havin’ fun with it! We saw some vet teams travel to il Forno tonight, teams that have made other bars there home’s for a while but decided to give us a shot tonight! Among these teams were Thundercats and Better Late Than Pregnant, both of which put on great performances tonight!

Question of the night goes to *drum roll* A1A, the highway in Florida! Teams that knew it, went big, teams that didn’t (which was a lot) clearly showed the confidence in their answers with a low 1 wager. I actually had no idea highways had names like that, fun fact I thought.

Going into the final, Thundercats (who was leading going into the 4th round) dropped to 3rd after missing a bonus chip near the end of the game. I’m with Sarah held onto 2nd place while 1st place was Better Late Than Pregnant. The final question played a bit easy tonight so no major changes in the standings. Here’s what we had: 3rd place, Thundercats, 2nd place, I’m with Sarah, 1st place, Better Late Than Pregnant! These travel teams really brought their A game tonight, hopefully next week, our house teams can punch back a bit! The competition is always welcome, so I’m hoping we have the same match up in 7 days! Grats to I’m with Sarah in their attempt to defend the house! Can’t wait to see what happens next week! Until then guys, later 😉

1st Place: Better Late Than Pregnant
2nd Place: I’m with Sarah
3rd Place: Thundercats

Roast House Pub – Frederick, MD

Boy is it good to be back! I missed you guys, and by the ice cream I
was handed, I know at least one team really missed me!

For that reason, I’m going to dispense with the usual pleasantries.

Tonight’s game was wild and wonderful, a roller coaster of lead
changes and crazy questions. And yes, some ice cream bribery that I
thoroughly enjoyed without playing any favorites! Between some
lunatics, Goliaths, and obscure sculptors, every team showed some
strengths tonight for a close game!

The final threw the leaderboard for a loop!

In third place tonight, The Duchess! good to have you guys, hope to
see you back!

In second place, as a solo, John Lithgow Fan Club! Great job!

In first place, now back to back winners, TBH! Congrats guys!
For next week…Chris of TBH is responsible for the category of the TV
Show Digimon Adventures, Season 1! I don’t even…Have fun studying i
guess! We’ll see you next week!

Until then,

Spider Kelly’s – Arlington, VA

Week three of the summer season saw a very interesting finish to the game.  Jimmy’s in Vegas was coming off of three consecutive third place finishes, but played a stellar second half which had some rather diverse questions.  At the end of round four, they were up by exactly 12 points, posing quite a wagering dilemma on the final question.  I will say that we’ve had some tough final questions lately, and Jimmy’s in Vegas must have sensed that, so they wagered zero to guarantee no worse than a tie for first, forcing the hand of Swedish Police on Vacation.  The final question was a bit easier than expected, and so our game did indeed come down to the Jesse Owens-themed tiebreaker.  Unfortunately, Jimmy’s in Vegas could not come up with a better answer, and so it was Swedish Police on Vacation who took down the win.  Next week, we’ll begin with a question on ABBA.  ~ Matt
