Fechez la Vache… for Monday Night Trivia!

April 10, 2018 by Pour House Trivia

Is it possible fans of Monty Python had an advantage in Monday night’s game of Pour House Trivia?  Maybe, but either way we welcomed 92 teams across 11 venues:

ROUND 1:

Monday’s game certainly broke from the norm in the opening stanza, as the first round included two of the most difficult bonus questions of the night.  First off, we discussed this majestic landmark in Australia’s largest city:

Sydney Opera House

While most of our teams recognized a description of the Sydney Opera House, many players did not realize how old this venue is.  Believe it or not, construction was completed all the way back in 1973.  With just 10% of the field earning bonus points here, most perfect scores were dashed, but we followed up with an equally difficult bonus question to close the first round.  We asked our teams name the Stieg Larsson novel trilogy which introduced Lisbeth Salander (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”).  While many teams assumed that the word “Girl” would have appeared in the title of the trilogy, those three books are collectively known as the Millennium trilogy.  Once again, only 10% of our teams earned these two bonus points.  For the first time in recent memory, the first round did not yield any perfect scores.

ROUND 2:

Monday’s audio question asked out teams to identify three female singers with seven-letter stage names.  About one-quarter of our teams recognized the voices of Madonna (“Holiday”), Shakira (“Underneath Your Clothes”), and Ashanti (“Foolish”) to pick up two bonus points.  Other topics included the upcoming reboot of the TV series “Lost in Space”, and this national championship winning team:

Notre Dame

After closing with a question on Betty Ross, the love interest of The Incredible Hulk, we saw seven perfect second round scores.

HALFTIME:

Monday’s halftime page included pictures of TV series featuring future Oscar-winning performers, as well as a matching section on nicknames of foreign countries.  The overall average came in at 15.8 points, with nine teams cruising to a perfect score of 20 points.  Here are your top Monday scores at the halftime break:

  • Need More Trash Culture (Flanagan’s Harp and Fiddle):  90
  • Give Us Your Beer Money (Greene Turtle – Hagerstown):  88
  • Oliver’s Army (DRP):  88
  • Wednesday’s Child (Bushwaller’s):  88
  • Mud Duck Hunt Club (Greene Turtle – Urbana):  87

ROUND 3:

Monday’s second half began with a look at the many floral works of Vincent Van Gogh, as well as three films directed by Peter Jackson (which were set OUTSIDE of Middle-earth).  Since the Kiwi has not directed many films away from the high fantasy genre, earning bonus points proved to be quite difficult.  Only six teams were aware of this murderous drama which featured the big screen debut of Kate Winslet:

Winslet

We closed the third round with an equally difficult bonus question.  After referencing the bizarre connection between gold medal figure skater Brian Boitano and the “South Park” franchise, only 15% of our teams knew that the “Battle of the Brians” resulted in a silver medal for Canadian skater Brian Orser.  As a result, only ONE team notched 36 points in Monday’s third round: MAJ (DRP).

ROUND 4:

Monday’s final round opened with a question on World geography, as we asked our teams to name the Central American countries which do not border both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea:

Central America

Later topics included Kroger grocery stores, the human shoulder blade, and World War II.  In 1943, Operation Avalanche and Operation Slapstick ultimately led to the surrender of Italy.  The fourth round actually featured the highest number of perfect scores on Monday, as nine teams ran the table with 36 points each.  Here are Monday’s top scores heading into the final question:

  • Need More Trash Culture (Flanagan’s Harp and Fiddle):  163
  • MAJ (DRP):  159
  • Kitten Mittens (Cheesetique):  159
  • Oliver’s Army (DRP):  158
  • Killer Snails (Hershey’s):  158

MONDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (50.0% success rate):

–> Thought to have lived about 300 A.D., a Roman military commander named Lucius Artorius Castus is considered to be one of the people who provided the basis for which legendary figure?

Across the board, exactly half of our teams arrived at the correct answer of King Arthur.  Congratulations to the seven teams who secured the Perfect 21 on Monday night by correctly answering all wagering questions.  Here are your top overall scores from Monday night:

  • MAJ (DRP):  171
  • Oliver’s Army (DRP):  170
  • Two Unsavories (DRP):  169
  • Kitten Mittens (Cheesetique):  168
  • Chariots of Dire (DRP):  166
  • Jerry Lewis Romperthon (Bushwaller’s):  165
  • What’s a Z.J.? (Il Forno):  165
  • Eat Ham (DRP):  163
  • Need More Trash Culture (Flanagan’s Harp and Fiddle):  163
  • Ask Jeeves (Bushwaller’s):  162

An Olympic Weekend of Pour House Trivia!

April 9, 2018 by Pour House Trivia

With winter finally behind us, our weekend schedule brought in 44 teams across four venues:

FIRST HALF:

While our Saturday teams did encounter many problems with their opening round set, our Friday teams closed their opening round with a Triple 50/50 question concerning celebrity siblings.  When asked to name the older sibling in three different pairs of siblings, many of our teams were surprised to learn which of these two actors is older:

Luke and Owen Wilson

Believe it or not, it’s actually Owen Wilson (on the right) that is nearly three years older than his brother Luke.  As a result, all five of the perfect first round scores from the weekend were turned in on Saturday.  Our audio clues dealt with James Bond music and songs which contain the word “Follow” in the title.  We also looked at birthstones with four-letter names (opal and ruby), Asian geography, and this piece of theatrical entertainment:

Death of a Salesman Hoffman

Only two weekend teams turned in a perfect second round score: Village Idiots (Vanish Brewery) and Uncle Jack (Belles’).

HALFTIME:

Brand names were the theme of both halftime pages this weekend, as we looked at canned food labels and corporate logos.  Across the board, the overall average score reached 17.7, with 11 teams recording a perfect 20 points.  These were our top scores of the weekend at the halftime break:

  • Uncle Jack (Belles’):  92
  • Give Us Your Beer Money (Pretzel & Pizza Creations):  89
  • Village Idiots (Vanish Brewery):  88
  • Fan Club (Vanish Brewery):  87
  • I Am Smartacus (Vanish Brewery):  87

SECOND HALF:

Friday’s second half opened with our most difficult bonus question of the weekend, as we asked our teams to name the actors who made the following big screen debuts:

1)  The precocious Gertie in “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial”.

2)  A former altar boy named Aaron Stampler in “Primal Fear”.

3)  The reclusive Arthur “Boo” Radley in “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

Only two of our Friday teams earned bonus points with the three correct answers of Drew Barrymore, Edward Norton, and Robert Duvall.  Meanwhile, our Saturday teams were quizzed on this series about to end its nine-year run on the air:

The Middle

We saw three perfect third scores: Tequila Mockingbird (Vanish Brewery), Uncle Jack (Belles’), and Cultured Heathens (Pretzel & Pizza Creations).  Friday’s final round featured questions on the different levels of tea quality, the olive branch, and these exotic animals:

Lemurs

Saturday’s final round featured a question on the 2018 Winter Olympics, as only two teams were able to name both of top two countries on the medal count: Norway and Germany.  The final question of the night also proved to be quite difficult, coming in the form of the Three Clues question:

CLUE 1: During the Civil War, he rose to the rank of Major General as command of the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

CLUE 2: His Cabinet included Secretary of State James Blaine and Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln.

Sure, this may sound like a description of Ulysses Grant, but after Andrew Johnson left office in 1869, each of our next three U.S. Presidents were former Civil War Generals from Ohio.  These two clues described the third of those three men: James Garfield.  The final round did not yield any perfect scores on either night this weekend.  Here are your weekend’s top scores after the fourth round:

  • Uncle Jack (Belles’):  164
  • Give Us Your Beer Money (Pretzel & Pizza Creations):  163
  • Village Idiots (Vanish Brewery):  156
  • I Am Smartacus (Vanish Brewery):  155
  • THREE TEAMS TIED WITH 153

FRIDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (15.4% success rate):

–> Among the eight men who ascended to the office of Commander-in-Chief after the death of a sitting President, who was the first to subsequently win a Presidential election.  Name him.

SATURDAY’S FINAL QUESTION (14.3% success rate):

–> For your wager, which western U.S. state capital ranks as the 24th most populous city in its home state, the lowest ranking of any state capital?

Both of our final questions were on the rather difficult side this weekend, as Friday saw four teams arrive at the correct answer of Theodore Roosevelt, while just two teams picked up points on Saturday’s final question with Olympia (Washington).  As a result, only Cultured Heathens (Pretzel & Pizza Creations) earned the Perfect 21 this weekend.  Here are your top overall scores from last weekend:

  • Village Idiots (Vanish Brewery):  168
  • Tequila Mockingbird (Vanish Brewery):  165
  • Give Us Your Beer Money (Pretzel & Pizza Creations):  162
  • Cultured Heathens (Pretzel & Pizza Creations):  162
  • His and Her Peas (Vanish Brewery):  160
  • This is How We Go Down (Springfield Manor):  156
  • Uncle Jack (Belles’):  152
  • I Am Smartacus (Vanish Brewery):  146
  • Channel Four News (Vanish Brewery):  146

THIS WEEKEND’S WINNERS:

Springfield Manor Winery in Thurmont, MD:  This is How We Go Down  (Next week’s first category: Nebraska)

Vanish Brewery in Leesburg, VA:  Village Idiots  (NO GAME NEXT WEEK – First category on April 20: U.S. Civil War)

Belles’ Sports Bar in Frederick, MD:  Uncle Jack  (Next week’s first category: Triple 50/50 – Baltimore Orioles or Washington Nationals?)

Pretzel & Pizza Creations in Hagerstown, MD:  Cultured Heathens  (Next week’s first category: “Weird Al” Yankovic – AUDIO)

A Towering Night of Thursday Trivia!

April 6, 2018 by Pour House Trivia

Thursday night’s game was full of surprises as we welcomed 119 teams across 14 venues:

ROUND 1:

Normally, the opening round of any Pour House Trivia game is the easiest, but such was not the case on Thursday night, as less than half of our teams answered correctly on each of two different first round questions:

–> In Miami Beach, State Road A1A is actually named Collins Avenue, though which chart-topping 1991 hip hop song refers to it as “Beachfront Avenue”?

–> What do the letters ‘MI’ stand for in the name of the British government agency MI6?

The correct answers were “Ice Ice Baby” and Military Intelligence.  Furthermore, only eight teams across the board earned bonus points by knowing the song “Ice Ice Baby” originally appeared on the Vanilla Ice album “To the Extreme”.  With an unexpectedly difficult start for our teams, we saw just one perfect score in the first round: Brother of Menelaus (Fish Market).

ROUND 2:

Thursday’s audio question featured film clips from the late Alan Rickman.  While the field had no trouble recognizing scenes from “Die Hard” and “Galaxy Quest”, many forgot that Rickman portrayed a cynical angel in the Kevin Smith film “Dogma”:

Alan Rickman

After questions on noble metals and U.S. cities, we gave our teams this query which proved to be the most difficult wagering question of the first half:

–> As a reference to the Olympics, which title was given to the four-episode spinoff of “The Bachelor” which aired this past February?

Only 19% of our teams gave us this correct response:BachelorIn a slight improvement from the opening stanza, we saw two perfect scores in the second round: Slapsgiving (Cushwa Brewing) and PC Principals (Fish Market).

HALFTIME:

Brands of chewing gum and foreign film directors were the themes on Thursday’s halftime page.  With an overall average of 16.3 points, we saw six teams notch a perfect 20 points.  These were your top Thursday scores after the first half:

  • Slapsgiving (Cushwa Brewing):  90
  • Fan Club (Quincy’s):  86
  • PC Principals (Fish Market):  85
  • Irish Mafia (Dawg House):  85
  • Gryffindorks (Beef O’ Brady’s):  85

ROUND 3:

Thursday’s second half opened with the post-“Jeopardy!” endeavors of this trivia champion:

Ken Jennings

Later, we covered topics such as the Warren Commission, the film “Gone With the Wind”, and this forgotten Microsoft product:

Zune

Four teams earned perfect scores in the third round: 1-2-3 Drink (Cushwa Brewing), YOLO Swaggins (Dawg House), The A-Team (Dawg House), and PC Principals (Fish Market).

ROUND 4:

Thursday’s final round opened with the most difficult bonus question of the night:

–> Name either one of the two NBA teams that each won two league titles during the decade of the 1970s.

For those teams that don’t have a basketball expert, the default answers of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics would have been effective here, as the Celtics won titles in 1974 and 1976.  But only seven teams earned bonus points with the second correct answer of the New York Knicks, who won titles in 1970 and 1973 thanks to Willis Reed:Willis ReedAfter questions on the ballets of Peter Tchaikovsky and the occupations of Chandler Bing, we closed the final round with a Triple 50/50 question on felines.  With only 13% of our teams answering all three parts correctly, we did not see any perfect scores in the fourth stanza.  Here are Thursday’s highest scores after the fourth round:

  • Slapsgiving (Cushwa Brewing):  164
  • PC Principals (Fish Market):  161
  • 1-2-3 Drink (Cushwa Brewing):  158
  • Fan Club (Quincy’s):  158
  • Lowered Expectations (Quincy’s):  158

FINAL QUESTION (8.7% success rate):

–> Within the last five years, which country has constructed five skyscrapers that all currently rank among the ten tallest buildings on Earth?

Sometimes, we ask a question knowing full well that there will be a very common wrong answer, and we suspected that to be the case here.  Though the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is more than 600 feet taller than any other skyscraper on Earth, the United Arab Emirates does not have a second building among the top 20.  Instead, half of the top ten (and 13 of the top 22) on this list are located in China.  It was indeed a toughie, as only nine teams earned points on this final question.  Not surprisingly, we did not have any teams record the Perfect 21 on Thursday with correct answers on all wagering questions.  Here are your top overall scores from Thursday:

  • Slapsgiving (Cushwa Brewing):  157
  • No Fruit No Karaoke (Champion Billiards):  156
  • PC Principals (Fish Market):  155
  • Friends of Dick Johnson (Guido’s):  153
  • Singing Inferno (Smoketown Brewing):  153
  • Unathletico Madrid (Guido’s):  152
  • Uranus Fly Trap (Smoketown Brewing):  150
  • Yolo Swaggins (Dawg House):  147
  • Triumvirate (Right Around the Corner):  146
  • Fan Club (Quincy’s):  146

In what could be a Pour House Trivia first for a full weeknight of games, Slapsgiving topped the overall leaderboard despite losing points on the final question.

TONIGHT’S WINNERS:

Quincy’s Bar and Grille in Gaithersburg, MD:  Fan Club  (Next week’s first category: Syracuse Orange Basketball)

A Monster (Truck) Night of Wednesday Trivia!

April 5, 2018 by Pour House Trivia

The first Wednesday of April welcomed 112 teams across 14 venues, one of which witnessed the best performance of the season!

ROUND 1:

Wednesday’s opening round included a question on FIFA World Cup Champions, a tasty snack of Sabra Hummus, and this Italian landmark:

Pisa

We closed the first round with a three-part question on animated animals.  With few surprises to begin the game, a whopping 32 teams rolled into Round 2 with a perfect score of 36 points.

ROUND 2:

The high wave of confidence came crashing down on the field with Wednesday’s audio question.   We asked our teams to identify three musical acts who each scored Top-40 hits by recording songs written by Bruce Springsteen.  Only 13% of our teams earned bonus points by recognizing Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (“Blinded By the Light”), 10,000 Maniacs (“Because the Night”), and Rage Against the Machine (“The Ghost of Tom Joad”).  Our teams did not have a chance to recover, as the second question of the round proved to be the most difficult wagering question of the first half:

–> Which two letters can be added to the name of the largest moon of Saturn to get the name of the largest moon of Uranus?

This question pulled a clean sweep at several venues, as the overall correct answer percentage dropped all the way to 24%:  The largest moon of Saturn is Titan, while the largest moon of Uranus is Titania.  Later, we looked at this dystopian film based on the work of Stephen King:

Running Man

We closed the second round with a question concerning the college town of Columbia (in both Missouri and South Carolina) and the U.S. Presidents that served between the Roosevelts.  The second round yielded six perfect scores.

HALFTIME:

Prosthetic noses and fictional sidekicks were the themes of Wednesday’s halftime page, which saw 11% of the field land perfect scores with an overall average of 15.8 points.  Here are Wednesday’s top scores after the first half:

  • Dave Martinez School of Management (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg):  94
  • Flight Level Awesome (Belles’ Sports Bar):  92
  • Kitten Mittens (Quinn’s):  92
  • Unfrozen Caveman Lawyers (Clover Theater):  91
  • Stephen Hawking’s Karaoke Machine (Memories):  91

ROUND 3:

Wednesday’s third round included our nightly Three Clues question:

CLUE 1: The nickname of 1940s baseball player Lawrence Davis.

CLUE 2: This word refers to a group of rhinoceroses.

CLUE 3: The title of the film which earned Best Picture at the 78th Academy Awards.

Even after hearing all three clues, less than half of our teams responded correctly with Crash.  Later, we looked at Shakespearean quotes, during which only eight teams earned bonus points by knowing that the phrase “All the world’s a stage” first appeared in the comedy “As You Like It”.  We also looked at the work of Jon Hamm, and this national flag:

Union Jack

Thanks to the Shakespeare question, only three teams scored a perfect 36 points in the third stanza: Obscure References (Delirium Cafe), Dave Martinez School of Management (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg), and Kitten Mittens (Quinn’s).  Each of those last two teams notched perfect scores in each of the first three rounds.

ROUND 4:

Wednesday’s final round as the most diverse of the night, hitting on topics such as celebrity fashion and lifestyle brands (Goop!), the political achievements of Sam Houston, and repeat Stanley Cup Champions.  We closed the night with the most difficult wagering question of the second half:

–> After spending several years as the lead singer of the pop band The Scene, which 25-year old female performer released solo studio albums entitled “Stars Dance” and “Revival”?

Only 19% of our teams came away with points with the correct answer of Selena Gomez:

Selena Gomez

With that difficult finish, only two teams earned perfect final round scores: It’s Mueller Time (Quinn’s) and Lambda Lambda Lambda (Lost Dog Cafe).  After a masterful performance, defending PHT World Series Champion Dave Martinez School of Management lost its perfect game by missing the final bonus question of the fourth round.   Here are your top Wednesday scores heading into the final question:

  • Dave Martinez School of Management (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg):  170
  • Kitten Mittens (Quinn’s):  163
  • It’s Mueller Time (Quinn’s):  161
  • Flight Level Awesome (Belles’ Sports Bar):  161
  • Death By Snoo Snoo (Memories):  160

FINAL QUESTION (26.8% success rate):

–> In 1975, St. Louis construction worker Bob Chandler began work on what iconic vehicle that later appeared in the 1981 film “Take This Job and Shove It” and a namesake Nintendo game?

Just over one-quarter of our teams responded correctly with this monster truck:

Bigfoot

Congratulations to Dave Martinez School of Management (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg), who was the only team to earned the Perfect 21 on Wednesday by answering every wagering question correctly.  This powerhouse team also became the first squad to top 180 points this season.  These were your top overall scores from Wednesday:

  • Dave Martinez School of Management (Bennigan’s – Clarksburg):  181
  • Hamster Relish (Memories):  165
  • Blind Squirrels (Memories):  164

A Trip to the Caribbean at Tuesday Night Trivia!

April 4, 2018 by Pour House Trivia

With just two months until the end of Season XVII, we welcomed 97 teams across 15 Tuesday night venues:

ROUND 1:

Tuesday’s game opened with a question on the ocular condition conjunctivitis, which was followed by a Three Clues question on the letter J.  The third clue referenced this well-dressed film character:

Will Smith

We closed the first round with questions on the New Orleans Saints (who as once derided by fans who nicknamed them the “Aint’s“) and the Benelux countries of Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.  Playing true to form, the first round was a breeze for the 16 teams that notched perfect scores to begin the game.

ROUND 2:

Tuesday’s audio question featured spoken word clips from three games shows: “The Price is Right”, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”, and “Beat Shazam”.  A pair of questions in the middle of the round kept most of our teams from notching perfect scores.  On a question about billionaire entrepreneur Evan Speigel, most of our teams knew that he was the founder of Snapchat, but only 11% of the field earned bonus points by also knowing that he is married to Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr:

Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel

Next up, we quizzed our teams on this query which was the most difficult wagering question of the first half:

–> Which fictional character was said to have been born in Princeton, New Jersey on July 1, 1899, with the full name of Henry Walton Jones, Jr.?

With only about one-third of our teams answering correctly, I guess our players forgot about this film scene:

Our teams bounced back nicely on a question about the country music band Sugarland, but the middle of the round took its toll on the field as just ONE squad recorded a perfect second score: Five Dollar Massage (The Block).

HALFTIME:

Tuesday’s halftime page featured film posters and a matching section on CEOs.  We saw 23% of our teams record perfect scores, with the overall average reaching 17.1 points.  Here are Tuesday’s top scores at the halftime break:

  • Five Dollar Massage (The Block):  92
  • Breadsticks (Upper Deck):  91
  • Bluth Frozen Banana Hammocks (Greene Growlers):  90
  • Warm Turkey Facial (The Block):  87
  • Cleatus (Casa Tequila):  87

ROUND 3:

Tuesday’s third round began with a rather difficult three-part question on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, but it was the second question of the round that proved to be a game-changer:

–>  What name is shared by an unfinished oratorio by Arnold Schoenburg, a film starring Tim Robbins, and a Biblical structure that connected heaven and Earth?

While it is true that the Tower of Babel was built in order to create a connection between Earth and heaven, that answer does not fit the other parts of the question.  The answer we were looking for was Jacob’s Ladder.  About half of our teams answered correctly, but many of those that answered incorrectly were overconfident, losing out on seven or nine wagering points.  Later, we looked at beer ingredients and the time zone geography of this U.S. state:

Florida Time Zones

Not surprisingly, one of the two teams that swept the third round was playing at our Florida venue, as Clavins (Blue Parrott) joined Lightfoot (Cugini’s) at the top of the third round leaderboard with 36 points each.

ROUND 4:

Tuesday’s final round opened with a question on this Olympic memory:

Kerri Strug

Sorry, that’s not Mary Lou Retton, but Kerri Strug.  Later, we looked at some of the “legitimate establishments” featured on the TV series “The Sopranos”, and closed with a Name That Year question.  Some of our teams did not need a buffer when asked to name the year of the first WrestleMania, earning two bonus points with the correct answer of 1985.  Three teams closed their night with a perfect final round: Merlot it All (Olney Winery), Trivia Newton John (Shuckin’ Shack), Drink Apple Juice, the O.J. Will Kill You (Quincy’s South).  Here are Tuesday’s top scores heading into the final question:

  • Five Dollar Massage (The Block):  166
  • How Did I Get Here? (Greene Growlers):  162
  • Breadsticks (Upper Deck):  160
